Transducer arrays for applying alternating electric fields (e.g., tumor treating fields a.k.a. TTFields) to a subject's body typically include a plurality of capacitively coupled electrode elements. Often, certain electrode elements on a given array tend to run hotter than other electrode elements. For example, in many anatomical contexts, the corner elements of the transducer array tend to run hotter than the non-corner elements. The spread of operating temperatures between the electrode elements that tend to run hotter and the other electrode elements can be reduced by wiring a capacitor in series with those electrode elements that tend to run hotter (e.g., the corner elements).

Using capacitors to regulate current in transducer arrays for applying tumor treating fields (TTFields)

An apparatus includes an outer adhesive layer comprising a conductive gel or conductive adhesive, at least one layer of anisotropic material, a layer of dielectric material, and a skin contact layer comprising a conductive gel or conductive adhesive. The at least one layer of anisotropic material and the layer of dielectric material are positioned between the outer adhesive layer and the skin contact layer. The layer of dielectric material contacts at least a first layer of the at least one layer of anisotropic material to form a capacitive structure.

Apparatuses for use in applying TTFields are disclosed. An apparatus comprises an electrode subassembly including at least one electrode element having a skin-facing side and a skin-facing surface. The apparatus further includes a skin contact subassembly comprising a skin contact conductive adhesive or gel configured to contact skin of a subject. One of the electrode subassembly or the skin contact subassembly comprises an electrically conductive polymer layer, and the other of the electrode subassembly or the skin contact subassembly comprises a second conductive adhesive or gel. The electrically conductive polymer layer is disposed against, and removably coupled to, the second conductive adhesive or gel, thereby removably coupling the electrode subassembly to the skin contact subassembly so that the skin contact conductive adhesive or gel is electrically coupled to the at least one electrode element.

Devices, systems, and methods for removing and replacing a subassembly of an electrode assembly

A transducer array including a conductive layer and a conductive gel layer is described. The conductive layer has one or more electrode element. The one or more electrode element is configured to receive electrical signals from an electric field generator producing an electric signal as a Tumor Treating Field. The conductive gel layer overlaps the one or more electrode element of the conductive layer. The conductive gel layer has a first region and a second region. The first region has a first resistivity and the second region having a second resistivity with the first resistivity being different from the second resistivity.

Tumor treating fields (TTFields) can be delivered to a subject's body at higher field strengths by switching off one or more electrode elements in a transducer array that are overheating. This may be accomplished by using thermistors that sense the temperature of each electrode element. Portions of the wiring of each transducer array is shared between the electrode elements and the thermistors by using a plurality of conductors, each of which electrically connects (a) a pin of a connector, (b) a respective electrode element, and (c) a respective thermistor. In some embodiments, all of the thermistors are wired in series. In other embodiments, all the thermistors share a common connection.

Arrays for delivering tumor treating fields (TTFields) with individually accessible electrode elements and temperature sensors

Tumor treating fields (TTFields) can be delivered to a subject's body using electrode elements that are arranged in sets, wherein each set includes a respective first electrode element and a respective second electrode element disposed in thermal contact with each other. Individual first conductors provide an electrically conductive path between each of the first electrode elements and a respective pin of a connector. And a second conductor provides an electrically conductive path between all of the second electrode elements and another pin of the connector. Temperature sensors are disposed in thermal contact with each set of electrode elements. Because the electrode elements are arranged in sets, the current that flows through any given set can be reduced (with respect to its maximum value) by switching off the first electrode element within the given set, in order to prevent the area that corresponds to the given set from overheating.

Arrays for delivering tumor treating fields (TTFields) with sets of electrode elements having individually adjustable active areas

Tumor treating fields (TTFields) can be delivered by implanting a plurality of sets of implantable electrode elements within a person's body. Temperature sensors positioned to measure the temperature at the electrode elements are also implanted, along with a circuit that collects temperature measurements from the temperature sensors. In some embodiments, an AC voltage generator configured to apply an AC voltage across the plurality of sets of electrode elements is also implanted within the person's body.

A transducer apparatus for delivering tumor treating fields to a subject's body, the transducer apparatus including: an array of electrodes, the array configured to be positioned over the subject's body with a front face of the array facing the subject's body, the array comprising electrode elements positioned in existing electrode positions arranged around a centroid of the array; an anisotropic material layer electrically coupled to the array of electrodes and located on a front side of the front face of the array; and at least one void space in the array of electrodes capable of enclosing an areal footprint equivalent to at least a portion of an areal footprint of at least one existing electrode position, and superimposable on at least a portion of at least one existing electrode position by rotation of the array around the centroid.

Apparatuses for delivering tumor treating fields having electrode elements with nonuniform thicknesses and methods for manufacturing same

Apparatuses and methods for imposing electric fields through a target region a patient are described. An apparatus includes a transducer array having a first and second electrode element receiving an alternating current waveform and a sensor array having a first temperature sensor positioned to detect a first temperature of the first electrode element and a second temperature sensor positioned to detect a second temperature of the second electrode element. The first temperature sensor is connected to a first conductor and second conductor. The second temperature sensor is connected to the second conductor and third conductor. A circuit provides a first known amount of electricity via the first conductor and second conductor to obtain the first temperature and a second known amount of electricity via the second conductor and the third conductor to obtain the second temperature. A controller adjusts the alternating current waveform based on the temperatures.

Optimization of composite electrode

Treatment of a target region using alternating electric fields (e.g., TTFields) may be planned by determining, based on a plurality of impedance measurements obtained during a first window of time, a first impedance at each of a plurality of voxels that correspond to the target region. Then, based on the first impedances, a plan for treating the target region with alternating electric fields is generated. Subsequently, an electric field may be induced in the target region based on the plan. In some embodiments, a baseline MRI of the target region is obtained, and contemporaneous baseline impedances are registered to the MRI. In these embodiments, the plan for treating the target region is further based on a comparison between the first impedances and the baseline impedances.

A method of applying tumor treating fields to a torso of a subject's body, the method including: locating a first transducer at a first location of the subject's body, the first location being on the torso of the subject's body; locating a second transducer at a second location of the subject's body, the second location being below the torso of the subject's body; and inducing an electric field between at least part of the first transducer and at least part of the second transducer.
