A liquid crystal display, including: a first substrate and a second substrate; a liquid crystal layer; a first data line disposed on the first substrate; a pixel electrode disposed on the first substrate; and a common electrode disposed on the first substrate and overlapping at least a portion of the pixel electrode and the first data line. One of the pixel electrode and the common electrode includes a plurality of branch electrodes spaced apart from each other and the other of has an at least approximately planar shape that is substantially parallel to a surface of at least one of the first substrate and the second substrate. The display can also include a passivation layer having a dielectric constant of about 3.5 or less, and including a first portion disposed between the common electrode and the first data line.

Liquid crystal display and manufacturing method thereof

A LCD and a method of driving the LCD are provided. The LCD includes first and second gate lines extending in a first direction, a data line insulated from the first gate line and crossing the first gate line, a pixel electrode including first and second sub-pixel electrodes, the pixel electrode being disposed in a pixel having a long side in the first direction, a first thin film transistor (TFT) connected to the first gate line, the data line, and the first sub-pixel electrode, a second TFT connected to the first gate line, the data line, and the second sub-pixel electrode, and a third TFT connected to the second gate line, the second sub-pixel electrode, and a charge-sharing capacitor, the charge-sharing capacitor sharing a data voltage applied to the second sub-pixel electrode.

Liquid crystal display and method of driving the same

A liquid crystal display includes a first substrate and a second substrate facing each other; a switching element disposed on the first substrate; a pixel electrode connected to the switching element and supplied with a data voltage; an opposing electrode disposed on the second substrate; and a liquid crystal layer disposed between the first substrate and the second substrate and including liquid crystal molecules. The pixel electrode includes a cutout and a liquid crystal direction controller that are alternately disposed. The cutout and the liquid crystal direction controller divide the pixel electrode into a plurality of sub-regions, and inclination directions of the liquid crystal molecules are different according to the plurality of sub-regions when the pixel electrode is supplied with the data voltage. The liquid crystal direction controller is concave downward or convex upward with respect to a surface of the first substrate.

In an array substrate and a method of manufacturing the array substrate, an array substrate includes a first switching element, a second switching element, a third switching element and a fourth switching element. The first switching element is electrically connected to a first data line. The second switching element is electrically connected to a second data line adjacent to the first data line. The third switching element is electrically connected to a data power line interposed between the first and second data lines. The fourth switching element is electrically connected to a gate power line receiving a voltage having different polarity from a voltage applied to the data power line. Therefore, light transmittance, opening ratio and display quality are improved.

A display device includes a first display panel facing a second display panel with a liquid crystal layer between them. The first display panel has a first gate line, a second gate line spaced apart from the first gate line, a first and second storage lines both spaced apart from the first gate line, first and second switching elements controlled by a first gate signal applied through the first gate line, a first sub-pixel electrode connected to the first switching element, a second sub-pixel electrode connected to the second switching element, a third switching element controlled by a second gate signal applied through the second gate line, and a coupling electrode connected to the third switching element and having a portion overlapping the second storage line. Different voltages are applied to the first storage line and the second storage line.

A method for manufacturing a liquid crystal display ('LCD') includes; disposing a gate line including a gate electrode on a substrate, disposing a gate insulating layer on the gate line, disposing a data layer including a data line, source electrode and a drain electrode facing the source electrode on the gate insulating layer, disposing a color filter on the gate insulating layer, disposing an overcoat layer on the color filter, disposing a planarization layer on a portion of the overcoat layer corresponding to the gate line, the data line and the drain electrode, and disposing a pixel electrode in contacted with the overcoat layer in a region corresponding to the color filter.

Liquid crystal display and method for manufacturing the same

A display substrate includes a base substrate and a unitary indivisible pixel electrode. The base substrate includes a gate line, a data line crossing the gate line and a thin-film transistor electrically connected to the gate line and the data line formed thereon. A pixel area is defined on the base substrate. The unitary indivisible pixel electrode includes a plurality of branch electrodes formed on the pixel area and a connection electrode connecting the branch electrodes to each other. Each of the branch electrodes includes a bent portion and the bent portions of adjacent branch electrodes are spaced apart from each other.

In a thin film transistor, first and second thin film transistors are connected to an Ngate line and an Mdata line, and first and second sub pixel electrodes are connected to the first and second thin film transistors, respectively. A third thin film transistor includes a gate electrode connected to an (N+1)gate line, a semiconductor layer overlapping with the gate electrode, a source electrode connected to the second sub pixel electrode and partially overlapping with the gate electrode, and a drain electrode facing the source electrode. A first auxiliary electrode is connected to the drain electrode and arranged on the same layer as the first and second sub pixel electrodes. An opposite electrode is arranged on the same layer as the gate line and at least partially overlaps with the first auxiliary electrode with at least one insulating layer disposed therebetween.

Thin film transistor substrate, liquid crystal display having the same, and method of manufacturing the same

A display device including a first gate line and a second gate line that extend in parallel with each other, a data line crossing the first and second gate lines to form a pixel region, a pixel electrode in the pixel region and including a main pixel electrode and a sub pixel electrode, which are connected to the first gate line and the data line, a control thin film transistor connected to the second gate line and the sub pixel electrode, and a gate driver. The gate driver outputs a first gate signal to the first gate line and a second gate signal to the second gate line. The first gate signal activates the first gate line during a first time and a second time following the first time, and the second gate signal activates the second gate line during the first time but not the second time.

A method of fine patterning a thin film and a method of manufacturing a display substrate by using the same, in which a fine photo pattern is formed on a base substrate, and a photoresist pattern is formed on the thin film. A fine photo pattern is formed by ashing the photoresist pattern. A fine pattern is formed by removing the thin film exposing through the fine photo pattern. A fine pattern is formed, and the fine pattern has a higher resolution than that of an exposure apparatus. The reliability of a process for manufacturing a display substrate and the display quality of a display device may be improved.

In a method of driving a liquid crystal display ('LCD') apparatus, a common voltage is applied to a common electrode above a liquid crystal layer and pixel voltages are applied to pixel electrodes under the liquid crystal layer to form an electrical field with the common electrode to control movements of liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer. Each of the pixel electrodes has slits. Then, a supplementary voltage is applied to a supplementary electrode between the slits of each pixel electrode to compensate the electric field formed by the pixel electrodes and the common electrode.
