A rechargeable battery is provided. The rechargeable battery comprises an electrode assembly, a case housing the electrode assembly, at least one lead tab accommodated in the case to electrically connect the electrode assembly to the case, and a welded joint joining the lead tab to the case. In the rechargeable battery, the case is connected to the lead tab without producing any spatter within the case. The welded joint extends from an outer bottom surface of the case to the lead tab. Further provided is a method for manufacturing the rechargeable battery.

Rechargeable battery and manufacturing method thereof

A can for a cylindrical lithium rechargeable battery, and a cylindrical lithium rechargeable battery using the same is provided. The battery includes: an electrode assembly having cathode and anode plates facing to each other, a separator interposed between the cathode and anode plates, and cathode and anode taps formed on the cathode and anode plates, respectively; a can accommodating the electrode assembly; and a cap assembly to seal an opening of an upper end portion of the can. The can has surface plate and a lower plate, and a protrusion is formed on the lower plate so as to increase the contact resistance between the anode tap and the lower plate, when the anode tap is welded to the lower plate.

Can for cylindrical lithium rechargeable battery and cylindrical lithium rechargeable battery using the same

In a cylindrical lithium ion secondary battery, the width of an electrode tab positioned at a center of an electrode assembly is extended so that it serves as a center pin and functions to release heat. Thus, it is not necessary to separately insert a center pin, thereby reducing the manufacturing cost and steps. The cylindrical lithium ion secondary battery comprises an electrode assembly, a case for receiving the electrode assembly, and a cap assembly for sealing the top opening of the case. The electrode assembly comprises a positive electrode plate and negative electrode plate. The positive electrode plate has a positive electrode tab, a positive active material region, a positive uncoated region, and a positive current collector exposed through the positive uncoated region. The negative electrode plate has a negative electrode tab, a negative active material region, a negative uncoated region, a negative current collector exposed through the negative uncoated region, and a separator interposed between the positive and negative electrode plates. At least one of the positive and negative electrode tabs has an extended width at the center of the electrode assembly.

Cylindrical lithium ion secondary battery

An electrode assembly for a lithium ion secondary battery and a lithium ion secondary battery using the same are provided. In a sealing tape attached to the outer circumference of the electrode assembly in order to prevent the wound electrode assembly from being unwound, the sealing tape is formed of the material having an affinity for the electrolyte to absorb the electrolyte and to swell or the external or internal surface of the conventional sealing tape is coated with such a material so that, when the sealing tape is impregnated with the electrolyte, the sealing tape swells to attach the electrode assembly and the can to each other and to thus prevent the welding parts of the electrode tabs from being disconnected due to the rotation or floating of the electrode assembly.

Electrode assembly for lithium ion secondary battery and lithium ion secondary battery using the same

A cylindrical lithium ion secondary battery includes a center pin fabricated with an inexpensive material and having a coating layer formed on the outer surface of the center pin. The cylindrical lithium ion secondary battery includes an electrode assembly having the center pin inserted through the center of the electrode. A case is provided for housing the electrode assembly and an electrolyte. A cap assembly seals the case. The center pin includes a body formed from a metallic material and a coating layer is formed on the outer surface of the body.

Electrode assemblies easily impregnated with an electrolyte are provided. A sealing tape attached to the outer circumference of the electrode assembly comprises a material having an affinity for the electrolyte. Alternatively, the entire sealing tape or a portion of the tape is coated with the material. In another alternative, the surface of the sealing tape is rough, thereby improving wetting of the tape by the electrolyte and diffusion of the electrolyte into the tape. In another embodiment, first and second insulating plates comprise a material having an affinity for the electrolyte. In another alternative, the insulating plates comprise a mixture of a material having an affinity for the electrolyte and polypropylene or polyethylene. Alternatively, the surfaces of the insulating plates are coated with the material or with a surfactant that reduces the surface tension of the electrolyte.

Lithium ion secondary battery

A lithium secondary battery, in which electrolyte impregnation capability is improved, even in the case of a high-density electrode assembly, by forming a bottom insulator plate with a structure to facilitate the impregnation of the electrode assembly with an electrolyte. The bottom insulator plate may be formed with a plurality of holes in the form of a mesh, and the holes are defined by a plurality of protrusions with differing heights to improve the electrolyte impregnation capability. Alternatively, the bottom insulator plate may be formed with a central hole and a plurality of peripheral holes radially arranged around the central hole in an aperture ratio to improve the electrolyte impregnation capability.
