A memristor device with a thermally-insulating cladding includes a first electrode, a second electrode, a memristor, and a thermally-insulating cladding. The memristor is coupled in electrical series between the first electrode and the second electrode. The thermally-insulating cladding surrounds at least a portion of the memristor.

In one embodiment, a display element includes a first electrode; a dielectric layer having recessed regions therein over the first electrode; a second electrode disposed on the dielectric layer; and a fluid with colorant particles within the display element, wherein a voltage signal applied to the first electrode and the second electrode controls movement of the colorant particles such that a first voltage signal provides a first optical state by compacting the colorant particles into the recessed regions and a second voltage signal provides a second optical state by spreading the colorant particles in the fluid.

A method and mold for creating nanoscale patterns in an ion-selective polymer membrane is provided, in which a mold comprising a substrate and a molding layer having at least one protruding feature is imprinted on the ion-selective polymer membrane, thereby creating a recessed feature in the membrane. Protruding features having nanoscale dimensions can be created, e.g., by using self-assembled nanostructures as a shadow mask for etching a molding layer. In one embodiment, an imprinted ion selective polymer membrane, suitable for use as a solid electrolyte, is adapted for use in an electrochemical device or fuel cell by adding a metal catalyst to one portion of the membrane to serve as a catalytic electrode.

Imprinting nanoscale patterns for catalysis and fuel cells

A metal-coated, wire-reinforced polymer electrolyte membrane that is permeable only to protons and hydrogen is disclosed. The metal-coated, wire-reinforced polymer electrolyte membrane has a surface microsturcture that prevents cracking of the metal coating during hydration. The metal-coated, wire-reinforced polymer electrolyte membrane can be used in liquid-type fuel cells to prevent crossover of fuel, gas and impurities.

An electrode is disclosed. The electrode includes a substrate having macropores therein. A barrier support layer, established on the substrate, has micropores therein. The macropores and at least some of the micropores are substantially lined with an electrolyte layer. A catalyst is in ionic contact with the electrolyte layer. A current collector is in electrical contact with the catalyst. A barrier layer is established on the barrier support layer and is electrically isolated from the current collector.

Compositions and methods for production of conductive paths can include a printable composition including a liquid carrier and a plurality of nanostructures. The plurality of nanostructures can have an aspect ratio of at least about 5:1 within the liquid carrier. Examples of nanostructures include nanobelts, nanoplates, nanodiscs, nanowires, nanorods, and mixtures of these materials. These printable compositions can be used to form a conductive path on a substrate. The printable composition can be applied to a substrate using any number of conventional printing techniques. Following application of the printable composition, at least a portion of the liquid carrier can be removed such that the nanostructures can be in sufficient contact to provide a conductive path. The nanostructures arranged in a conductive path can be sintered or used as a conductive material without sintering.
