Methods for controlling the long chain branch content of ethylene homopolymers and copolymers produced in a polymerization process include the steps of contacting a metallocene compound, an organoaluminum compound, a high LCB activator-support, and a low LCB activator-support to form a catalyst composition, contacting the catalyst composition with ethylene and an optional olefin comonomer in a polymerization reactor system under polymerization conditions to produce an ethylene polymer having a LCB content, and controlling the relative amount of the high LCB activator-support and the low LCB activator-support in the catalyst composition to adjust the LCB content of the ethylene polymer.

Controlling long-chain branch content with dual activator-supports

Ethylene-based polymers having a density of 0.952 to 0.968 g/cm, a ratio of HLMI/MI from 185 to 550, an IB parameter from 1.46 to 1.80, a tan δ at 0.1 secfrom 1.05 to 1.75 degrees, and a slope of a plot of viscosity versus shear rate at 100 secfrom 0.18 to 0.28 are described, with low melt flow versions having a HLMI from 10 to 30 g/10 min and a Mw from 250,000 to 450,000 g/mol, and high melt flow versions having a HLMI from 30 to 55 g/10 min and a Mw from 200,000 to 300,000 g/mol. These polymers have the processability of chromium-based resins, but with improved stress crack resistance and topload strength for bottles and other blow molded products.

Dual metallocene polyethylene with improved processability for lightweight blow molded products

Ethylene-based polymers having a density of 0.952 to 0.965 g/cm, a high load melt index (HLMI) from 5 to 25 g/10 min, a weight-average molecular weight from 275,000 to 450,000 g/mol, a number-average molecular weight from 15,000 to 40,000 g/mol, a viscosity at HLMI from 1400 to 4000 Pa-sec, and a tangent delta at 0.1 secfrom 0.65 to 0.98 degrees. These polymers have the processability of chromium-based resins, but with improved stress crack resistance, and can be used in large-part blow molding applications.

Blow molding polymers with improved cycle time, processability, and surface quality

Ethylene-based polymers are characterized by a melt index less than 1 g/10 min, a density from 0.94 to 0.965 g/cm, a Mw from 100,000 to 250,000 g/mol, a relaxation time from 0.5 to 3 sec, and an average number of long chain branches (LCBs) per 1,000,000 total carbon atoms in a molecular weight range of 300,000 to 900,000 g/mol that is greater than that in a molecular weight range of 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 g/mol, or an average number of LCBs per 1,000,000 total carbon atoms in a molecular weight range of 1,000,000 to 2,000,000 g/mol of less than or equal to about 5 and a maximum ratio of η/3η at an extensional rate of 0.1 secfrom 1.2 to 10. These polymers have substantially no long chain branching in the high molecular weight fraction of the polymer, but instead have significant long chain branching in a lower molecular weight fraction, such that polymer melt strength and parison stability are maintained for the fabrication of blow molded products and other articles of manufacture. These ethylene polymers can be produced using a dual catalyst system containing a single or two atom bridged metallocene compound with two indenyl groups, and a single atom bridged metallocene compound with a fluorenyl group and a cyclopentadienyl group.

Dual catalyst system for producing polyethylene with long chain branching for blow molding applications

Disclosed herein are ethylene-based polymers generally characterized by a melt index of less than 1 g/10 min, a density from 0.93 to 0.965 g/cm, a CY-a parameter at 190° C. of less than 0.2, an average number of short chain branches per 1000 total carbon atoms of the polymer in a molecular weight range of 400,000 to 600,000 g/mol that is greater than that in a molecular weight range of 40,000 to 60,000 g/mol, and an average number of long chain branches per 1000 total carbon atoms of the polymer in a molecular weight range of 400,000 to 600,000 g/mol that is greater than that in a molecular weight range of 4,000,000 to 6,000,000 g/mol. The ethylene polymers can be used to fabricate pipes, blown films, and blow molded products, and the ethylene polymers can be produced with a dual catalyst system containing a single atom bridged or two carbon atom bridged metallocene compound with two indenyl groups or an indenyl group and a cyclopentadienyl group, and a single atom bridged metallocene compound with a fluorenyl group and a cyclopentadienyl group with an alkenyl substituent.

Dual catalyst system for producing high density polyethylenes with long chain branching

Ethylene-based polymers are generally characterized by a high load melt index of less than 12 g/10 min, a weight-average molecular weight from 200,000 to 550,000 g/mol, a number-average molecular weight from 18,000 to 48,000 g/mol, a CY-a parameter of less than 0.12, a tan &#x3b4; at 0.1 secfrom 0.5 to 0.9 degrees, a tan &#x3b4; at 100 secfrom 0.5 to 0.75 degrees, and a viscosity at 0.001 secfrom 1.3&#xd7;10to 1&#xd7;10Pa-sec. These ethylene polymers can be produced by peroxide-treating a bimodal molecular weight distribution dual metallocene-catalyzed resin, and can be used to produce blow molded bottles and other blow molded products.

A method of determining multimodal polyethylene quality comprising the steps of (a) providing a multimodal polyethylene resin sample; (b) determining, in any sequence, the following: that the multimodal polyethylene resin sample has a melt index within 30% of a target melt index; that the multimodal polyethylene resin sample has a density within 2.5% of a target density; that the multimodal polyethylene resin sample has a dynamic viscosity deviation (% MVD) from a target dynamic viscosity of less than about 100%; that the multimodal polyethylene resin sample has a weight average molecular weight (M) deviation (% MD) from a target Mof less than about 20%; and that the multimodal polyethylene resin sample has a gel permeation chromatography (GPC) curve profile deviation (% GPCD) from a target GPC curve profile of less than about 15%; and (c) responsive to step (b), designating the multimodal polyethylene resin sample as a high quality resin.

Advanced quality control tools for manufacturing bimodal and multimodal polyethylene resins

Disclosed are ethylene polymer compositions containing a homogeneously-branched first ethylene polymer component and 15-35 wt. % of a homogeneously-branched second ethylene polymer component of higher density than the first ethylene polymer component. The ethylene polymer composition can be characterized by a density from 0.912 to 0.925 g/cm, a ratio of Mw/Mn from 2 to 5, a melt index less than 2 g/10 min, and a CY-a parameter at 190&#xb0; C. from 0.35 to 0.7. These polymer compositions have the excellent dart impact strength and optical properties of a metallocene-catalyzed LLDPE, but with improved machine direction tear resistance, and can be used in blown film and other end-use applications. These ethylene polymers can be produced by peroxide-treating a broad molecular weight distribution Ziegler-catalyzed resin, and can be used in large diameter, thick wall pipes and other end-use applications.
