The disclosed system may include an enclosure that is configured to house internal electrical components disposed on a printed circuit board (PCB). The system may also include a first antenna feed that is electrically connected to the PCB, to the enclosure, and to a radiating coupling arm configured for wireless communication in a first wireless communication band. The system may further include a second antenna feed that is electrically connected to the PCB and to an antenna configured for wireless communication in a second, different wireless communication band. The system may also include a first grounding leg that forms an electrical ground between the PCB and the enclosure, and a second, switchable grounding leg positioned away from the first grounding leg. This switchable grounding leg may provide a controllable electrical ground between the PCB and the enclosure. Various other methods and apparatuses are also disclosed.

The disclosed mobile electronic device may include a display, an enclosure supporting the display and comprising a conductive portion including at least one inward protrusion, and a ground plane positioned within the enclosure and comprising at least one channel, wherein the at least one inward protrusion extends within the at least one channel of the ground plane and a gap defined between the conductive portion of the enclosure and the ground plane forms a slot antenna that is configured to radiate electromagnetic signals through a portion of the display. Multi-band antenna architectures for a wearable device and related devices and methods

Multiple circuits in a computing device can share one or more conductive elements. The use of the conductive element can vary by circuit, such as an antenna radiator for a radio frequency (RF) circuit or an electrode for an electrocardiography (ECG) circuit. The circuitry sharing a conductive element can utilize signals obtained over different frequency ranges. Those ranges can be used to select decoupling circuitry, or elements, that can enable the respective circuits to obtain signals over a respective frequency range, excluding signals over one or more other frequency ranges corresponding to other circuitry sharing the circuit. Such an approach allows for concurrent independent operation of the circuitry sharing a conductive element.

The disclosed system may include a housing that includes a non-conducting substrate and a conductive enclosure that at least partially surrounds the non-conducting substrate. The system may also include an antenna disposed on the non-conducting substrate of the housing. Moreover, the system may include an antenna feed electrically connected to a separate conductive portion on the non-conducting substrate. Methods of optimizing performance for a wearable device are described herein, as are systems and wearable devices for performing the methods. One example method includes selecting, based on first and second sensor data, a current position of a portion of a wearable device donned by a user relative to the user's body from among at least three predefined positions of the portion. The method further includes, after selecting the current position of the portion based on the first and second sensor data, determining whether to modify an operating characteristic of the wearable device based on the current position. The method further includes, in accordance with a determination that an operating characteristic should be modified based on the current position, modifying a first operating characteristic for a display subsystem of the wearable device or a second operating characteristic for a communication subsystem of the wearable device.

Systems for optimizing performance of a wearable device based on a position of a portion of the wearable device, and methods of use thereof

Various antenna designs are presented that can be used to provide for wireless communication in electronic devices, such as wearable electronic devices. Various embodiments provide antenna structures and designs that can support multiple frequency bands in a relatively compact space. Various embodiments utilize a ring antenna forming a portion of an outer perimeter of the housing, the ring antenna including a plurality of connections coupled the PCB, the plurality of connections. The plurality of connections include at least one feed connection coupled to at least one signal source on the PCB, respectively, and at least one ground connection coupled to a ground point on the PCB. In some embodiments, the connections may be inductively or capacitively loaded. The ring antenna may include a single feed connection or multiple feed connections respectively coupled to different signal sources.

Various antenna designs are presented that can be used to provide for wireless communication in electronic devices, such as wearable electronic devices. Various embodiments provide antenna structures and designs that can support multiple frequency bands in a relatively compact space. Various embodiments utilize a slot and patch antenna design to support multiple frequency bands. Other embodiments utilize a slot and inverted 'F' antenna (IFA) assembly, hybrid slot antenna assembly, or external slot antenna assembly. A split ring antenna assembly can also be used, where individual segments of the ring antenna can support specific frequency bands. Other embodiments utilize a dielectrically loaded planar inverted 'F' antenna (PIFA) assembly to support various frequency bands.

Various antenna designs are presented that can be used to provide for wireless communication in electronic devices, such as wearable electronic devices. Various embodiments provide antenna structures and designs that can support multiple frequency bands in a relatively compact space. Various embodiments utilize a primary conductive ring embedded in the walls of the housing as antennas for various forms of wireless communication. The conductive ring includes a plurality of conductive elements separated from each other by portions of the housing, the plurality of conductive elements coupled respectively to the one or more signal sources on the PCB. Embodiments may additionally utilize a ground extension element positioned a distance away from the primary conductive ring in an opposite direction from the display module, in which the ground extension element is coupled to a ground connection of the PCB and boosting the antenna signal strength.
