A traction battery controller of an electrified vehicle dynamically selects an estimation gain based on an operating condition of the vehicle and controls the vehicle according to a state (e.g., a state-of-charge (SOC)) of the traction battery estimated from an equivalent circuit model of the traction battery that depends on the estimation gain. The operating condition of the vehicle may be indicative of on-board energy (OBE) or a power demand of the vehicle. In operation, the controller selects the estimation gain to be (i) a high estimation gain during a first operating condition of the vehicle, whereby compared to a nominal estimation gain the battery state is estimated at an increased speed but with lower accuracy and (ii) a low estimation gain during a second operating condition of the vehicle, whereby compared to the nominal estimation gain the battery state is estimated with greater accuracy but at a decreased speed.

Traction battery controller providing fast and accurate state of charge status

A traction battery controller of an electrified vehicle dynamically adjusts an estimation gain based on a state-of-charge (SOC) of the traction battery and controls the vehicle according to an operating characteristic of the traction battery estimated from an equivalent circuit model of the traction battery that depends on the estimation gain. The controller may reduce the estimation gain while the SOC is low or high and may otherwise maintain the SOC. The controller may dynamically adjust the estimation gain based further on a temperature of the traction battery. The operating characteristic may be a power capability of the traction battery or an updated SOC of the traction battery.

The controllers, responsive to data indicative of an internal cell temperature of one or more cells of the battery exceeding a threshold, decrease power output from the battery to the motor. The circuitry is configured to determine when the battery total charge of the at least one battery pack should be charged, determine, when the electric vehicle is traveling, a travel time between the electric vehicle and the one or more charging stations, and instruct the thermal conditioning system to thermally condition the at least one battery pack based on the travel time to reduce the time needed to charge the at least one battery pack.

A method of determining battery power capability may include: determining a circuit model for a battery, including a first resistance (r) in series with a second resistance (r) and a capacitance (C) in parallel; setting upper and lower limits for r, rand C based on a battery temperature a battery state of charge or both; applying an EKF to determine r, rand C within the set upper and lower limits; and outputting the battery power capability based on r, rand C. The upper and lower limits may be adjusted based on the age of the battery.

The present disclosure relates to a battery capacity active estimation method for an electric vehicle. The method is capable of determining the battery capacity based on estimating a State Of Charge (SOC) of the battery before and after a discharge operation but without having to wait until an establishment of sufficient thermal and electric equilibria in the battery. The estimation of SOC may even be made while the battery is being slowly charged. Depending on the equilibrium state of the battery, SOCs may be either directly obtained by measuring Open Circuit Voltage of the battery when the battery is in electric equilibrium or calculated and estimated when the battery is not in electric equilibrium.

A vehicle includes a traction battery and a controller coupled to the traction battery and having a memory, the controller being programmed to control the traction battery based on a difference between a total resistance indicated by voltage and current at a first operating condition and a battery cell resistance associated with the first operating condition previously stored in the memory, the difference being indicative of a wiring resistance associated with electrical connectors such as wires, cables, bus bars, and the like of the battery. A hybrid or electric vehicle includes a traction battery to store and provide energy for the vehicle. The traction battery includes a number of battery cells. For effective operation of the traction battery, operating parameters, such as state of charge and battery power limits, may need to be known. The operating parameters may be a function of battery cell voltage and impedance parameters. A parameter estimation scheme may use measured cell voltages and a measured traction battery current as inputs. A current measurement bias may be modeled that incorporates measurement bias caused by asynchronous current and voltage measurements. The current measurement bias may be estimated for each cell and the value may differ between cells.

Battery state of charge control systems and methods provide techniques to assist in managing battery capacity and battery life under various environmental, operating, and storage conditions. Dynamic management of desired battery SOC based on one or more parameters associated with usage patterns and environmental conditions, e.g., charge/discharge patterns, state of charge and/or temperature during storage may extend useful battery life.
