A radiation source includes: a hollow core optical fiber, a working medium; and a pulsed pump radiation source. The hollow core optical fiber has a body and has a hollow core. The working medium is disposed within the hollow core. The pulsed pump radiation source is arranged to produce pulsed pump radiation that is received by, and propagates through, the hollow core from an input end to an output end. One or more parameters of the pulsed pump radiation, the optical fiber and the working medium are configured to allow soliton self-compression of the pulsed pump radiation so as to change a spectrum of the pulsed pump radiation so as to form output radiation. In some embodiments, a length of the optical fiber is such that the output end substantially coincides with a position at which a temporal extent of the pulsed pump radiation is minimal.

The method includes generating pulses of input radiation having a duration between 50 fs and 400 fs and having a rise time of less than 60 fs; and exciting a working medium within a hollow core fiber with the pulses of input radiation.

Radiation source assemblies and methods for generating broadened radiation by spectral broadening. A radiation source assembly includes a pump source configured to emit modulated pump radiation at one or more wavelengths. The assembly further has an optical fiber configured to receive the modulated pump radiation emitted by the pump source, the optical fiber including a hollow core extending along at least part of a length of the fiber. The hollow core is configured to guide the received radiation during propagation through the fiber. The radiation emitted by the pump source includes first radiation at a pump wavelength, and the pump source is configured to modulate the first radiation for stimulating spectral broadening in the optical fiber.

A supercontinuum radiation source comprises: a radiation source, an optical amplifier and a non-linear optical medium. The radiation source is operable to produce a pulsed radiation beam. The non-linear optical medium is configured to receive the amplified pulsed radiation beam and to broaden its spectrum so as to generate a supercontinuum radiation beam. The optical amplifier may supply a pump radiation beam to a gain medium, an intensity of the pump radiation beam being periodic and having a pump frequency that is an integer multiple of the frequency of the pulsed radiation beam. The optical amplifier may supply pump energy to a gain medium only when the pulses of the pulsed radiation beam propagate through the gain medium.

The invention relates to a primary light converter () for converting primary light () into secondary light (). An electrical light conversion unit () converts at least a part of the primary light () into the secondary light (), and an energy converter () converts at least a part of the primary light () into electrical energy, wherein the electrical light conversion unit () is adapted to be driven by the electrical energy from the energy converter (). It is not necessary to electrically connect the one or several primary light converters via a wire to an external power supply. The liquid crystal cell () comprises a periodic structure (). If voltage is applied to the liquid crystal cell () by a voltage source (), a period phase pattern is generated. The liquid crystal cell () and the light source () are adapted such that multiple separate light beams () are generated in different directions by diffraction at the generated periodic phase pattern, wherein the multiple separate light beams () form the light pattern (). Since the light pattern is generated by diffraction at the periodic phase pattern, which is modifiable by applying voltage, different light patterns can be generated, in particular, for decorative purposes, in a technically relatively simple way.

The light emitter is adapted for emitting light with a predefined angular color point distribution through an output and comprises a phosphor () and a pump source (), wherein the pump source () is adapted for emitting pump light to at least part of the phosphor (), and the phosphor () is adapted for emitting phosphor light by light conversion of absorbed pump light, and wherein a matching element () is provided which is arranged at least partly between the phosphor () and the output of the light emitter, and which is adapted for adjusting the ratio of the light intensity of the emitted phosphor light emitted by the phosphor () towards the output of the light emitter to the light intensity of the transmitted pump light going through the phosphor () towards the output of the light emitter. In this way, a versatile light emitter with a predefined angular color point distribution in conjunction with any desired angular light intensity distribution is provided at low costs.
