A data storage device that includes a data storage medium and a controller communicatively coupled to the data storage medium. The controller is configured to receive commands from a host and to detect a hung state in the data storage device. The controller is also configured to determine an execution status of a command, of the commands from the host, associated with the hung state. The controller is further configured to dynamically carry out a self-recovery operation in the data storage device to clear the hung state. The self-recovery operation includes steps that depend upon the execution status of the command associated with the hung state.

Systems and methods for saving critical data upon power loss are described. In one embodiment, the systems and methods include performing a write operation to a first track of a storage drive, monitoring a voltage level of a storage drive to detect power loss on the storage drive while performing the write operation, identifying a track ID of a second track adjacent to the first track upon detecting power loss on the storage drive, and storing the identified track ID in a non-volatile memory on the storage drive.

An implementation of a system disclosed herein provides an apparatus, comprising a system on chip, wherein the system on chip is configured to receive a sleep command from a host and in response to the sleep command, calculate a primary checksum of a block of data from a low latency memory such as a tightly coupled memory (TCM), copy the primary checksum and the block of data into a volatile storage media, preserve interface variables of the system on chip in the volatile storage media, operate the volatile storage media in a self-refresh mode, and shut down power to other components on the system on chip.

A method or system comprises reading content of a plurality of system files from storage media of a storage device, generating a master storage device system file, and storing the master storage device system file on the storage media at a master system file location. The location of the master system file is provided to boot firmware or hardware. As a result, when the system boots up, the master system file is read into a temporary cache.

A fixed disc drive includes a built-in user level security system. The system includes instructions that create an user interface upon a computer allowing interaction with security features of the drive without relying upon BIOS compatibility. In a specific embodiment, the user level security interface is provided by the disc drive during the system boot sequence. A method of disc drive security includes receiving a request from a computer to provide an operating system, and responsively providing user level security interface instructions. The user level security instructions are then executed by the computer to generate a user level security interface. If the drive is in a locked state, the interface requires an user to provide an acceptable password otherwise access to data on the drive is forbidden or otherwise restricted.

The present invention provides a method of describing defects that requires less memory space than conventional methods. Entries of a first defect table are sorted according to the type of track layout, or zones. They are then grouped into clusters. Each cluster is characterized by a set of new parameters, including a starting sector, a scratch parameter, a span parameter, and an angle parameter. The new parameters are stored in a second table, replacing the corresponding entries in the first table. In this manner, a single entry in the second table replaces one or more entries in the first table with one entry in the first table.

Pattern-based defect description method

A system for adapting head switching sequence in a disc drive includes a method of measuring the time duration for a head switch operation and the time duration of a track switch operation. The system compares the two time durations to determine whether head switching or track switching should be utilized within a zone of tracks on the surface of the data disc. Track switch time durations and head switch time durations may be averaged within a zone and the averages compared to determine whether to use head switching or track switching.

Drive with adaptive data format and head switch sequencing

A method of storing values that involves splitting each value into a n-bit value and an overflow value, and storing, in a main table, the n-bit values in order of increasing magnitude of the values. For each overflow value, the position of the smallest n-bit value is stored in an overflow table. To retrieve a value, the position of the corresponding n-bit value is compared to the positions stored in the overflow value to determine the overflow value of the n-bit value. The actual value is then obtained from the n-bit value and its overflow value.

A disc drive typically contains at least one disc which is divided into sectors. The method of eliminating reassignments involves copying data stored at one sector (referred to as a moving sector) to another sector (referred to as a moving spare), and assigning the logical address associated with the moving sector to the moving spare. The elimination process is repeated until the reassignments are eliminated. Verification of the data copied is conducted to ensure data integrity. Furthermore, the elimination process is preferably executed only when the disc drive is in an idle mode. Records are kept and updated as the process is carried out so that the process can be continued even if interrupted.

A storage device for use with a computer is provided, the device includes self diagnostics and configuration. The device is adapted to recognize when the host computer system requests an operating system from the device, and instead of providing the operating system, provides its own diagnostic and configuration software. When the software executes on the computer, the software causes a user interface to be generated, which provides various configuration and diagnostic options to a user. Upon termination of the self diagnostic and configuration software, the device provides the operating system to the computer such that the start up sequence is resumed.
