A flyback converter control architecture is provided in which primary-only feedback techniques are used to ensure smooth startup and detection of fault conditions. During steady-state operation, secondary-side regulation is employed. In addition, current limits are monitored during steady-state operation using primary-only feedback techniques to obviate the need for a secondary-side current sense resistor.

Primary-side controller for hybrid secondary-side regulation

A switching power converter is provided that communicates with a mobile device to receive a value of a load detection current. The switching power converter adjusts the cycling of a power switch until a constant current mode of operation is entered with a known output current driving the mobile device. The switching power converter subtracts the load current from the output current to measure a soft-short circuit current.

A switching power converter provides regulated voltage to a load. The switching power converter comprises a transformer including a primary winding coupled to an input voltage and a secondary winding coupled to an output of the switching power converter. The switching power converter further comprises a power switch coupled to the primary winding and a rectifier coupled to the secondary winding. Current is generated in the primary winding responsive to the power switch being turned on and not generated responsive to the power switch being turned off. A detection circuit measures a voltage across the rectifier. If the detection circuit detects a decrease in the voltage across the rectifier outside of a blanking period, the detection circuit generates a current pulse in the secondary winding of the transformer.

Secondary-side dynamic load detection and communication device

A universal serial bus (USB) charger provides power to a client device. A USB connector interfaces with a client device and receives a request for the output voltage of the USB charger to be at a specific value. If the requested voltage level is lower than the current output voltage level, the output voltage level is set to the requested level and a bleeder circuit is enabled to discharge the output capacitor of the USB charger.

Smart Grouping control method for power converter switching noise management

A power converter with a dynamic preload. The power converter includes a magnetic component coupled between an input and an output of the power converter. The output of the power converter has an output voltage for providing power to a load. A switch is adapted to control current through the magnetic component according to on and off times of the switch. A dynamic preload circuit is coupled to the output of the power converter. The dynamic preload has loading characteristics that are adjusted responsive to a signal indicative of an output voltage at the output of the power converter.
