A liquid crystal display device and a controlling method thereof are provided. The liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal display panel screen divided into a plurality of areas; a plurality of backlight sources to selectively irradiate light respectively to the divided areas of the screen; and a controller to obtain at least one intermediate brightness value associated with data for at least one of the divided areas and to control a brightness of at least one of the backlight sources corresponding to the at least one divided area according to the at least one intermediate brightness value.

Liquid crystal display with controllable backlight for increased display quality and decreased power consumption

Disclosed is a printed circuit board, on which a holder for fixing a lamp is mounted, is disposed on an upper surface of a bottom cover, and an inverter supplying a driving voltage to the lamp is disposed on a lower surface of the bottom cover. The printed circuit board is electrically connected to the holder as a conductive pattern is embedded in the printed circuit board. The connector is directly mounted on the inverter, or it is connected to the inverter via a wire. In this case, the connector is also connected to the printed circuit board. Therefore, the connector of the inverter and the connector of the printed circuit board are electrically connected.

A PCB and an LCD device with the same are disclosed. The PCB and the LCD device force an LED to directly contact either a heat radiation member or a metal plate. As such, heat generated in the LED is directly transferred to the heat radiation member or the metal plate without passing through wiring and prepreg layers. Therefore, the heat is effectively discharged to the exterior through a bottom cover. In other words, heat generated in the LED can be effectively discharged because of passing through the shortened heat radiation path.

A backlight unit is disclosed, to remove an unnecessary portion from a PCB and to decrease the number of connectors and wires, which includes a plurality of light-emitting lamps arranged in one direction inside a lamp housing; first and second driving unit PCBs positioned at both sides on the rear surface of the lamp housing, to apply a power to the light-emitting lamps; first and second connection PCBs positioned at both sides of the lamp housing, wherein the respective first and second connection PCBs are separately provided from the first and second driving unit PCBs; and first and second power supplying wires for the respective connection between the first and second driving unit PCBs with the first and second connection unit PCBs.

An apparatus for driving a lamp comprising at least one lamp, an inverter to supply an alternating current signal, a transformer to boost the signal from the inverter and to supply the boosted signal to the lamp, and a safety circuit to detect the signal flowing to the lamp and to compare the signal with a predetermined threshold to shut down the inverter in accordance with the compared result.
