Methods for reducing platinum drug-induced toxicity in a cell expressing Organic Cation Transporter 2 (OCT2), methods for reducing platinum drug-induced toxicity in a subject, methods for treating cancer, methods for increasing efficacy of platinum drug treatment in a subject, and pharmaceutical compositions are described. The described methods and compositions include an OCT2 inhibitor where the OCT2 inhibitor is buflomedil or a salt thereof, dolutegravir or a salt thereof contains an imidazole, or is miconazole or a salt thereof.

Methods of preventing toxicity of platinum drugs

Embodiments of present invention provide a method of splicing optical fibers. The method includes holding a first and a second fiber respectively by a first and a second rotary clamp; aligning axes of the first and second fibers to a common reference; moving the first and second fibers that are being held by the first and second rotary clamps onto a splicing machine; and causing the first and second fibers being spliced together by the splicing machine. A fiber splicing apparatus or system is also provided for performing the method thereof.

Systems, methods and apparatuses for real-time anastomosis guidance and surgical evaluation using optical coherence tomography

An optical coherence tomography system having real-time artifact and saturation correction includes an optical coherence tomography unit, and a signal processing and display system adapted to communicate with the optical coherence tomography unit to receive imaging signals therefrom. The optical coherence tomography system is a Fourier Domain optical coherence tomography system. The signal processing and display system includes a parallel processor configured to correct the imaging signals, in real time, to at least partially remove image artifacts and saturation based on a subset of image data within an image frame.

Optical coherence tomography system having real-time artifact and saturation correction

An illumination system includes a light source, an optical waveguide that has a proximal end and a distal end such that the proximal end is arranged to receive light from the light source and the distal end is suitable to illuminate an object of interest; and an optical coupler constructed and arranged to couple light from the light source into the optical waveguide. The optical coupler includes a reflective surface that reflects at least some light diverging from the light source to be coupled into the optical waveguide.

A motion-compensated optical coherence tomography system includes an optical coherence tomography sensor that includes a common-path optical fiber having an end for emitting light, reflecting reference light and receiving returned light for detection; a motion-compensation system attached to the common-path optical fiber and operable to move at least a portion of the optical fiber so as to compensate for motion between the end of the common-path optical fiber and an object being imaged; and a feedback control system configured to communicate with the optical coherence tomography sensor and the motion-compensation system. The feedback control system is configured to receive information concerning a measured distance of the end of the common-path optical fiber from the object and provide instructions to the motion-compensation system to decrease an amount of deviation of the measured distance from a desired distance.

Motion-compensated optical coherence tomography system

An optical coherence tomography imaging system includes a Fourier domain optical coherence tomography sensor system, a signal processing system configured to communicate with the Fourier domain optical coherence tomography sensor system to receive detection signals therefrom and to provide imaging signals, and an image display system configured to communicate with the signal processing system to receive the imaging signals. The signal processing system includes a parallel processor configured to calculate structure information and Doppler information from the detection signals in real time such that the imaging signals provide a real time display of combined structure and flow of an object under observation.

Real-time 3D and 4D fourier domain doppler optical coherence tomography system

Transfecting biology cells with nucleic acid molecules (DNA, siRNA) is an essential prerequisite in elucidating how genes function in complex cellular context and how their activities could be modulated for therapeutic intervention. Traditionally studies are carried out on a low throughput gene-by-gene scale, which has created a huge bottleneck in functional genomic study and drug discovery. Development of high-throughput cell transfection technology will permit functional analysis of massive number of genes and how their activities could be modulated by chemical or biological entities inside cells. This invention describes design, construction of device and apparatus for high throughput effective cell transfection. Procedures and protocols for using the device and apparatus are also described in the application. Novel methods of using the device in cell-based assays are also disclosed.

High-throughput cell transfection device and methods of using thereof

Embodiments of the present invention provide a plastic fiber coupler. The plastic fiber coupler includes a bundle of plastic optical fibers (POFs) arranged in a ring-shape; and an optical mixing tube attached to a cross-section of the bundle of POFs. In one embodiment, a cross-section of the optical mixing tube may be coated with a reflective film forming a reflective type plastic fiber coupler; in another embodiment, the optical mixing tube is attached to a second bundle of plastic optical fibers forming a transmissive type plastic fiber coupler.

Plastic fiber coupler and method of manufacturing thereof

Electroporation is performed in a controlled manner in either individual or multiple biological cells or biological tissue by monitoring the electrical impedance, defined herein as the ratio of current to voltage in the electroporation cell. The impedance detects the onset of electroporation in the biological cell(s), and this information is used to control the intensity and duration of the voltage to assure that electroporation has occurred without destroying the cell(s). This is applicable to electroporation in general. In addition, a particular method and apparatus are disclosed in which electroporation and/or mass transfer across a cell membrane are accomplished by securing a cell across an opening in a barrier between two chambers such that the cell closes the opening. The barrier is either electrically insulating, impermeable to the solute, or both, depending on whether pore formation, diffusive transport of the solute across the membrane, or both are sought. Electroporation is achieved by applying a voltage between the two chambers, and diffusive transport is achieved either by a difference in solute concentration between the liquids surrounding the cell and the cell interior or by a differential in concentration between the two chambers themselves. Electric current and diffusive transport are restricted to a flow path that passes through the opening.
