Disclosed is a rechargeable lithium battery including a positive electrode including a positive active material; a negative electrode including a negative active material; an electrolyte solution including a lithium salt and a non-aqueous organic solvent; and a separator between the positive and the negative electrodes, the separator including a porous substrate and a coating layer positioned on at least one side of the porous substrate. The negative active material includes a Si-based material; the non-aqueous organic solvent includes cyclic carbonate including ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, or combinations thereof, the cyclic carbonate being included in an amount of about 20 volume % to about 60 volume % based on the total amount of the non-aqueous organic solvent; and the coating layer includes a fluorine-based polymer, an inorganic compound, or combinations thereof. The rechargeable lithium battery has improved cycle-life and high temperature storage characteristics.

The present invention relates to an electrolyte for a lithium battery and a lithium battery comprising the same. The electrolyte includes a non-aqueous organic solvent, a lithium salt, and a first additive capable of forming a chelating complex with a transition metal and which is stable at voltages ranging from about 2.5 to about 4.8 V.

A rechargeable lithium battery includes a positive active material for intercalating and deintercalating lithium ions; a negative electrode including a negative active material for intercalating and deintercalating lithium ions; and a polymer electrolyte including a polymer, a non-aqueous organic solvent and a lithium salt. The rechargeable lithium battery has a battery capacity per unit area of the positive electrode from about 3.3 mAh/cmto about 2.8 mAh/cm. The polymer includes a first monomer represented by the following Chemical Formula 1 and a second monomer represented by at least one of the following Chemical Formulae 2 to 7 at a weight ratio of about 85:15 to about 50:50 of the first monomer to the second monomer. A method of preparing a lithium secondary battery is disclosed, the method including coating a coating layer-forming composition including an inorganic compound and an organic/inorganic bindable silane compound having a first reactive functional group on a substrate to form a separator including a coating layer; preparing an electrode including an active material and a binder having a second reactive functional group; stacking the electrode to contact the coating layer of the separator, and adding an electrolyte to the electrode and separator to prepare a lithium secondary battery; and heat-treating the lithium secondary battery to react the first reactive functional group with the second reactive functional group and form a chemical bond.
