In a liquid crystal panel in which pseudo dot inversion driving is performed, the occurrence of flicker or vertical and horizontal strings is prevented by preventing an alignment shift between individual layers during the fabrication of a TFT array from producing a difference between the respective abilities of thin-film TFTs to charge adjacent pixels (). For this purpose, the liquid crystal display panel is constructed such that two TFTs which are enclosed by two adjacent image signal lines () and scan signal lines () and adjacent to each other along the signal lines () have respective source electrodes () adjacent to the different image signal lines (). The source electrodes () and drain electrodes () of the two TFTs connected to the adjacent pixels () are alternately arranged such that variations caused by the alignment shift in the sizes and areas of overlapping portions between the individual layers of the TFTs are equal or the same.

To provide a structure and a method for driving an active matrix liquid crystal display device having low electric power consumption and high quality image. The active matrix liquid crystal display device of the present invention comprises a plurality of scanning lines and a plurality of signal lines which are disposed in matrix, and a thin film transistor (TFT) and a pixel electrode corresponding to each combination of scanning line and signal line. The scanning line corresponding to each of the pixel electrodes is located on the upper and lower sides of the pixel electrode. The TFT is formed between the scanning line corresponding to the pixel electrode and upper and/or lower portion of the scanning line. An additive capacity is formed between the pixel electrode and a scanning line other than the scanning line corresponding to the pixel electrode. The stored capacity is formed between its corresponding scanning line and one line upper scanning line or between its corresponding scanning line and one line lower scanning line. The stored capacity is located alternately on the neighboring signal lines.

A driving method of an active matrix LCD is provided. According to this method, a scan signal has three voltage levels, i.e., an ON voltage Vg, an OFF voltage Voff and a compensation voltage Ve having the opposite polarity with respect to the OFF voltage Voff. In contrast with the conventional capacitively coupled driving method in which the scan signal consists of four voltages, the driving method of this invention can reduce a cost and power consumption for a driver IC without degradation due to flickers or other causes. The method for adjusting the brightness of the LCD accompanying this driving method as well as the method for optimizing design parameters of the compensation voltage Ve and a thin film transistor of the LCD are also described.

A liquid crystal display unit including a plurality of subpixels in each pixel provides superior gradation over a wide viewing angle, and is produced with no increase in manufacturing cost and no deterioration of desired properties (such as reduction in brightness, contrast and response). No additional manufacturing step is required since a control capacitor electrode is formed at the same time as source and drain electrodes constituting a thin-film transistor. By controlling the ratio of display area and the difference in applied voltage of the subpixels, preferable viewing angle properties are obtained. The display properties at the boundary of subpixels are improved by controlling the gap width and the direction of boundary of the subpixels, thus providing a bright display.

A thin-film transistor of an inverted-staggered structure includes a semiconductor layer with a channel portion, a protective insulating film extending on the channel portion of the semiconductor layer, a source electrode, and a drain electrode. The protective insulating film has a rectangular shape with four corners, and each of two of the corners overlaps one of the source electrode and the drain electrode while two others of the corners overlap neither the source electrode nor the drain electrode. The thin-film transistor may be modified so that one of the corners overlaps one of the source electrode and the drain electrode while three others of the corners overlap neither the source electrode nor the drain electrode.

Pixel electrodes in the periphery of a thin film transistor array (peripheral part of the display screen) of an active matrix type liquid crystal display device are directly electrically shortcircuited with signal lines, whereby an alternating current signal is always applied to the pixel electrodes without being passed through a thin film transistor as a switching element. Thereby the liquid crystal arranged on the peripheral part of the display screen is driven in a static state resulting in a high stability against the display characteristics.

An improved arrangement of a liquid crystal display device is provided in which the redundancy of a known but unwanted TFT (thin film transistor) defect is suppressed so that the yield per finished liquid crystal display device product can be increased without deterioration in the picture quality. Each pixel of the liquid crystal display device arranged at an intersection of one of scanning lines and one of signal lines is provided with two or three TFTs and also, a storage capacitor which is formed of a portion of a gate insulating layer and is sandwiched between its electrode and a preceding scanning line in the previous row using no extra masking procedure. The source, drain and gate electrodes of both the first and third TFTs are respectively coupled to the same signal line, the electrode of the same pixel and the adjacent scanning lines. The gate, source and drain electrodes of the second TFT are respectively coupled to the same scanning line to which the gate electrode of the first TFT is coupled, the electrode of the same pixel and the electrode of a succeeding pixel provided on the opposite side of the scanning line with respect to the same pixel. The arrangement also has a scanning driver circuit capable of activating two scanning lines at the same time for a sequential one-by-one scanning operation, whereby no fault in a reproduced image will be perceived in spite of the presence of a defective TFT.

An active matrix liquid crystal display device employing a thin film transistor (TFT) system includes a semiconductor of each TFT which is smaller in width than a gate bus electrode and is arranged on the gate bus electrode, and a drain electrode of the TFT is formed as a reflective pixel electrode thereby providing a light diffusion effect.

Reflective-type active matrix liquid crystal display device

A video projector utilizes a reflective liquid crystal light valve of the active matrix system and a polarizing beam splitter. An active matrix array circuit of the light valve has pixel electrodes arranged in a matrix mattern. The pixel electrodes each has a reflective surface for reflecting a light beam and protects corresponding switch elements from the light beam. There are provided at least two switch elements for each of the pixel electrodes so as to enhance the redundancy of the array circuit. A display apparatus using a light-transmitting ceramic having an electrooptic effect. A voltage application head has at least a pair of electrodes which contact the light-transmitting ceramic. The head is driven by a head driver so as to scan across a surface of the light-transmitting ceramic. Electrodes may be formed also on the surface of the light-transmitting ceramic. A bright and dark pattern caused by double refraction in the light-transmitting ceramic is seen through a polarizing plate.

Display apparatus

A display apparatus using a light-transmitting ceramic plate having an electrooptic effect known as Kerr effect is disclosed. The ceramic plate is placed between two parallel polarizers having a same axis of polarization. A transparent flexible sheet faces a surface of the ceramic plate. The flexible sheet has a plurality of transparent striped electrodes on a surface facing the surface of the ceramic plate. The striped electrodes are locally brought into contact with the surface of the ceramic plate by a pressure applied by a pressure application head which is either always or intermittently pressed onto the flexible sheet. The pressure application head is movable in a direction parallel to the striped electrodes for scanning.
