An apparatus and method of inline measurement of low-concentration hydrocarbons overlaps fluorescence, scatter and absorption spectroscopy devices so as to measure scatter and absorption of fluorescing oil and the excited fluorescence itself. The apparatus includes a fitting, an input port, an output port, and a sapphire tube having a hollow interior in fluid connection with the input port and the output port. Flow medium passes through the input port, the sapphire tube, and the output port. The apparatus also includes a light emitter, a first detector, and a second detector. The light emitter can include a lens, an absorption and scatter wavelength emitter, and a fluorescence wavelength emitter. An incident absorption and scatter beam and an incident fluorescence beam from the light emitter and parallel so as to determine free hydrocarbon, dissolved hydrocarbons, and solids in a sample within the sapphire tube.

A wideband light source includes multiple light sources enclosed within a butterfly package. The butterfly package includes light sources of different types such as a plurality of SLEDs and a plurality of laser diodes. Other types of broadband and narrow band light sources may be included on the same butterfly package in a similar manner. The emitted light from each light source is collimated via a collimating lens and directed towards an optical fiber using a mirror. Each light source produces light in a different spectral range, and the collimated beams from the various light sources are combined into a joined broadband beam by a plurality of corresponding dichroic mirrors. The broadband beam is coupled into a single mode or polarization maintaining fiber which serves as the optical output from the butterfly package. A processor monitors the power output of each light source drives each light source to ensure stability.

A system and method for controlling steam based on a determination of steam quality include a steam conduit defining an interior volume of steam, an emitter for first and second coherent light beams, a receiver for signals resulting from an interference pattern of the first and second coherent light beams after refraction from a droplet in the steam at a convergence point, and a processor to determine steam quality based on the signals. There can be more than one receiver to account for phase differences related to droplet shape and size. The steam quality is also assessed by measuring droplet velocity by frequency of the interference patterns, and steam vapor and the refraction element of the scattering from the liquid droplet by absorption spectroscopy. The system can be utilized with on-line and real time measurements for on-line and real time determinations of steam quality.

An apparatus, system, and method for emission filter. A filter apparatus is presented. In one embodiment, the filter apparatus may be adapted for fluorescence spectroscopy. In a particular embodiment, the filter apparatus comprises a solution. The solution may include a polar protic solvent and an absorbing specimen. Additionally, the filter apparatus may include an adhesive to conform the solution into a solid filter.
