Multi-channel communication devices and methods are provided, which employ a filter bank, connected between antenna(s) and wideband converter(s), that comprises many narrowband surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters having respective distinct frequency bands within a bandwidth of the wideband converter(s). For example, devices may be configured as multi-channel receivers with SAW filters replacing current heterodyne circuitry and achieving effective separation of reception channel and effective attenuation of adjacent blocking signals in a compact device. In other examples, devices may be configured as multi-channel transmitters and/or transceivers, possibly having a variable number of channels, to realize compact multi-channel radio.

Disclosed is a method of inducing and promoting development of beneficial gut flora in a subject and/or of reducing the frequency and duration of crying periods in a subject, the method comprises administering to the subject a lipid composition comprising a vegetable-derived fat source, wherein the fat source is a triglyceride fat source comprising triglycerides with 15-55% palmitic acid moieties out of the total fatty acids, and wherein the level of palmitic acid moieties at the sn-2 position of the glycerol backbone is at least 30% of total palmitic acid. The method is particularly intended for children. Specific fat sources, as well as food articles and a commercial package comprising the same are disclosed.

Methods and lipid compositions for promoting development of gut flora

A device for replenishing ionizable material in a field ionization apparatus is disclosed. The device comprises a heatable reservoir containing the ionizable material, a field ionization electrode structure, and a channel being in fluid communication with said heatable reservoir. The heatable reservoir and the channel are designed and constructed such that when the heatable reservoir is heated to an evaporation temperature of the ionizable material, a flux of vaporized ionizable material is directed along the channel to a tip of the field ionization electrode structure.

Method and apparatus for generating ion beam

A device and method for assisting a user in regaining his balance is disclosed. The device comprises: at least one sensor for sensing changes in weight distribution on any of the feet of the user, at least one propulsion unit to be coupled to any of the feet of the user for displacing a foot of the user when a change in the weight distribution on that foot reaches a predetermined condition; and a controller for receiving signals from the sensor indicative of the predetermined condition and activating the propulsion unit. When the predetermined condition is determined the propulsion unit displaces a foot of the user mechanically in a direction that results in the repositioning of the support area of the user beneath the center of mass of the user, thus allowing the user to regain balance.

A calculating circuit and a method for generating an output signal representing an output number approximating an N-th root and/or a reciprocal of an input number represented by an input signal are described. The calculating circuit includes a subtractor circuit, an integrator circuit, and a multiplier circuit. The subtractor circuit responsive to a first signal and a feedback signal and configured for generating an error signal representing a difference between the first signal and the feedback signal. The integrator circuit responsive to the error signal and configured for computing the output signal. The multiplier circuit responsive to the output signal and configured for generating a feedback signal. The method for generating the output signal includes the following iterative steps: (i) generating an error signal at a j-th iteration, (ii) integrating the error signal for obtaining the output signal, (iii) generating the feedback signal and (iv) repeating steps (i) to (iii) as required to obtain the N-th root and reciprocal with a required accuracy.

A synchronization unit for performing timing synchronization in the time domain includes storage, a multiplier, a signal analyzer, and a timing error estimation unit. The storage stores a reference signal. The multiplier calculates a sum of minus one product shift and a sum of plus one product shift based on the reference signal. The signal analyzer calculates left and right cross-correlation points based on the sum or minus one product shift and the sum of plus one product shift. The timing error estimation unit estimates a timing error of a received signal based on the left cross-correlation point and right cross-correlation point.

System and method for pre-FFT OFDM fine synchronization

A synchronization unit for performing fine synchronization in the Time Domain, the synchronization unit includes a storage configured to store reference signals. A multiplier capable of calculating sum of zero product shift, sum of minus one product shift, and sum of plus one product shift, based on the reference signals. A signal analyzer capable of computing left, center, and right cross-correlation points based on the sum of minus one product shift, the sum of plus one product shift, and the sum of zero product shift. A timing error estimation unit capable of estimating timing error of the received signal based on the left cross-correlation point and the right cross-correlation point. A phase estimation unit capable of estimating common phase error of the received signal based on the sum of zero product shift. A system and method for enhancing the reception of a single carrier signal. The single carrier signal includes periodic training signal and data. The system includes a transmitter configured such that L symbols of either the beginning or end of the N symbols of the training signal, where L&#x3c;N, are duplicated at either the end or the beginning of the training signal, respectively. The system further includes a receiver configured to receive the modified training signal for the calculation of FIR coefficients in a single pass and without the need for least mean square (LMS) methods or the like.

Training signal in a single carrier transmission

A system and method for adaptive modulation of downstream communication between a wireless hub and a wireless modem on a selected downstream channel is provided. The adaptive modulation allows for changing the downstream modulation on a packet by packet basis. The downstream modulation is changed by specifying modulation parameters including any of a modulation format, symbol rate, and FEC for each packet. A super frame may be utilized that includes a header that specifies different modulation parameters for each of multiple data packets associated with the super frame. The modulated transmissions are sent on fixed bandwidth channels that are specified based on the bit rate of the modulated transmission.

Adaptive downstream modulation scheme for broadband wireless access systems

A system for enhancing the reception of a single carrier signal. The single carrier signal includes periodic training signal and data. The system includes a transmitter configured such that L symbols of either the beginning or end of the N symbols of the training signal, where L&#x3c;N, are duplicated at either the end or the beginning of the training signal, respectively. The system further includes a receiver configured to receive the modified training signal for the calculation of FIR coefficients in a single pass and without the need for least mean square (LMS) methods or the like.

A method for reducing a ghost constituent of a composite video signal. The composite video signal includes a teletext data lines constituent. The method includes the step of detecting and processing two teletext data line constituent so as to obtain a ghost induced error. The method of further includes the step of utilizing the ghost induced error for calculating filter coefficients and applying the composite video signal to a filter having the filter coefficient for obtaining deghosted composite video signal.

An enhanced digital signal processor (EDSP) includes execution section that includes the following constituents: a processor, an arithmetic logic unit (ALU), a memory device for holding set of instructions for execution selected from enhanced set of instructions, a memory device for holding data, another clock generator for generating a plurality of clock signals coupled to above constituents. Internal communication bus coupled to the above constituents for affording controlled communication between them, a correlator, coupled to the bus, for communication with the execution section. The correlator having an input port for receiving external input data and an output port for outputting data. The correlator being controlled by the processor and being responsive to the selected instruction from the enhanced set of instructions, for operating in the following mode: correlator processing mode wherein the correlator receives data from the above constituents and outputs data to the constituents, and wherein the input data received through the input port, is transmitted to the output port in an intact form.

First detector for detecting N (N.ltoreq.S) waveforms in the serration pulses thereby indicating first event occurrence. Second detector for detecting M (M.ltoreq.E.sub.2) waveforms in the second equalization pulses, thereby determining the reference event occurrence, such that the .DELTA.T .sub.1 equals M*T.sub.E +S*T.sub.S.
