A thermoelectric generator has a module chamber defined between an exhaust pipe portion and a coolant pipe. A thermoelectric conversion module and an HC sensor are located in the module chamber. An ECU performs a fault diagnosis on the thermoelectric generator by detecting the leakage of exhaust gas into the module chamber from the exhaust pipe portion based on detection information output by the HC sensor.

A blocking device provided in an evaporation passage is placed in an open state such that communication between an inside of a canister and an inside of a fuel tank is permitted, a negative pressure generating device provided in an atmospheric passage is operated, and a pressure in the fuel tank is detected, whereby whether a failure has occurred in the fuel tank is determined. Then, the blocking device is placed in a blocking state, the negative pressure generating device operated, and a pressure in the canister is detected, whereby whether a failure has occurred in the canister is determined.

Failure diagnostic apparatus and failure diagnostic method for in-tank canister system

A canister comprises a tank port communicated with an upper air chamber in a closed fuel tank, a purge port communicated with an intake passage of an engine, an atmospheric port opened to the atmosphere, and a main adsorbent chamber containing activated carbon, and the canister is further provided with a partition plate between the tank port and the purge port for preventing both ports from being directly communicated with each other, so as to form a first chamber between the main adsorbent chamber and the tank port, and a second chamber between the main adsorbent chamber and the purge port, and a purge buffer plate is further provided in the main adsorbent chamber between the tank port and the purge port, for communicating between the first and second chambers with each other, the first chamber serves as an air chamber containing no activated carbon while the second chamber contains activated carbon. With this configuration, the canister has no external pipe line, the time change in fuel concentration of purged gas during treatment of evaporated fuel from the fuel tank is moderated in order to restrain an engine air-fuel ratio from being abruptly changed, and the operation ability of the engine can be satisfied.

Canister

A pressure container in accordance with the invention is provided with a mouth piece having a cylindrical boss portion and a flange portion which is protruded from an outer periphery of the boss portion and a synthetic resin liner which is integrally formed in the flange portion. In the pressure container, an annular groove to which an inner peripheral portion of an inner edge portion of the liner is fitted so as to slide in a direction of expanding a diameter is provided on an inner side surface of the flange portion. Accordingly, it is possible to improve a reliability of an airtight seal in a bonding portion between a liner and a mouth piece.
