A scanning antenna includes a transmission and/or reception region including a plurality of antenna units and a non-transmission and/or reception region other than the transmission and/or reception region. The scanning antenna includes a TFT substrate, a slot substrate, a liquid crystal layer, a seal portion surrounding the liquid crystal layer, a wall structure (additional seal portion) disposed in a region surrounded by the seal portion in the non-transmission and/or reception region, a reflective conductive plate, a first spacer structure defining a first gap between a first dielectric substrate and a second dielectric substrate in the transmission and/or reception region, and a second spacer structure disposed in the wall structure and defining a second gap wider than the first gap. The wall structure includes a first main side face and a second main side face that intersect a surface of the first dielectric substrate, and at least one of the first main side face and the second main side face includes a plurality of recessed portions and/or a plurality of protruding portions when viewed from a normal direction of the first dielectric substrate.

Scanning antenna and method for manufacturing scanning antenna

A liquid crystal display device including a pair of substrates, defined as a first substrate and a second substrate and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the pair of substrates. The device also includes a pixel electrode and an additional electrode formed on the first substrate, and a contact hole that is configured and arranged to connect the pixel electrode and the additional electrode. In certain embodiments, the contact hole is formed at a liquid crystal domain boundary. In other embodiments, an additional contact hole is also provided between the pixel electrode and a second additional electrode, and in such embodiments the contact hole and the additional contact hole are formed within different liquid crystal domains. Further, in certain embodiments, the pixel electrode includes a plurality of pixel electrode slits arranged in a pattern to form a plurality of liquid crystal domains within each pixel.

Liquid crystal display device and method of fabricating the same

A liquid crystal display device comprising a liquid crystal layer including liquid crystal molecules provided between a first substrate and a second substrate; pixels forming a display area; electrodes for applying a voltage across the liquid crystal layer within each of the pixels; a plurality of domain regulating structures for dividing orientations of the liquid crystal molecules and forming multiple domains within each of the pixels, when a predetermined voltage is applied across the liquid crystal layer within each of the pixels. The device also includes a structure which is formed in an outer area located next to the display area, but that does not overlap the display area, and is substantially the same as at least one of the plurality of domain regulating structures.

Liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device including a liquid crystal layer sealed between a pair of substrates; an alignment layer formed on at least one of the substrates; a polymer formed of a photopolymerized material on the alignment layer; and a pixel electrode, including an electrode portion and a plurality of slits, formed on one of the substrates. The device also includes a source electrode and a Cs intermediate electrode, having the same potential as the pixel electrode, formed between the pixel electrode and one of the substrates; and a Cs bus line located between the Cs intermediate electrode and one of the substrates. The liquid crystal layer contains part of a photopolymerizable monomer, which is a source material of the photopolymerized material.

A liquid crystal display device including a pair of substrates sandwiching liquid crystal molecules, a plurality of gate bus lines, and a plurality of data bus lines, with each of the data bus lines extending to intersect the gate bus lines and bending in a zigzag manner. A plurality of pixels are formed in areas enclosed by the data and gate bus lines, with a plurality of pixel electrodes, each covering a substantial area of one of the pixels. A plurality of domain regulating structures for regulating orientation directions of the liquid crystal molecules and for forming multiple domains are formed in each of the pixels. At least one of the domain regulating structures bends along a first side edge of the pixel electrode and domains are divided in accordance with the bending of the domain regulating structure.

A vertical alignment mode liquid crystal display device having an improved viewing angle characteristic is disclosed. The liquid crystal display device uses a liquid crystal having a negative anisotropic dielectric constant, and orientations of the liquid crystal are vertical to substrates when no voltageisapplied, almost horizontal when a predetermined voltage is applied, and oblique when an intermediate voltage is applied. At least one of the substrates includes a structure as domain regulating means, and inclined surfaces of the structure operate to regulate azimuths of the oblique orientations of the liquid crystal when the intermediate voltage is applied.

Vertically-aligned (VA) liquid crystal display device

In the liquid crystal display device and the method of manufacturing the same, the pixel electrodesand the projection patternare formed on the TFT substrateside, and surfaces of the pixel electrodesand the projection patternare covered with the vertical alignment film. Then, the TFT substrateand the CF substrateare arranged such that top end portions of the projection patternon the CF substrateare brought into contact with the TFT substrate. Then, the liquid crystalhaving the negative dielectric anisotropy is sealed between them. Accordingly, the step of scattering the spacers can be omitted, change in the cell thickness can be prevented, and the good display quality can be achieved.

Liquid crystal display device and method of manufacturing the same

A liquid crystal display device including a common electrode on a first substrate, a pixel electrode on a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer between the first and second substrates. The device also include first and second alignment control structures formed, respectively, on the first and second substrates, for regulating azimuths of orientations of the liquid crystal when a voltage is applied thereto. The first and second alignment control structures each include a first line portion (extending in a first direction) and a second line portion (extending in a second direction, which is different from the first direction). The pixel electrode includes an edge extending in a direction different from both the first and second directions.

A liquid crystal display device including a pair of substrates and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the pair of substrates, as well as a source electrode, a Cs intermediate electrode, and a pixel electrode formed on one of the pair of substrates. The liquid crystal display device also includes vertical alignment films formed on the pair of substrates and polymer layers formed on the vertical alignment films, wherein a contact hole, which connects the source electrode and the pixel electrode, and another contact hole, which connects the pixel electrode and the Cs intermediate electrode, are both formed at a liquid crystal domain boundary.

A vertical alignment type liquid crystal display device including a plurality of pixels, which further includes a first substrate and a second substrate and a liquid crystal layer between the first substrate and the second substrate. The first substrate and the second substrate include alignment control structures which extend linearly, and when viewed in a direction vertical to the first substrate, in a pixel, the alignment control structure of the first substrate and the alignment control structures of the second substrate are arranged alternately. The alignment control structure of the first substrate includes first and second linear portions, and distances between the first and second linear portions and an adjacent alignment control structure of the second substrate are different from each other. Additionally, each of the first and second linear portions and the alignment control structures of the second substrate are arranged in parallel.

Vertically-alligned (VA) liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device that includes a plurality of pixels, a first substrate and a second substrate, as well as a liquid crystal layer provided between the first and second substrates. A first alignment structure and a second alignment structure are formed on the first substrate, and a third alignment structure and a fourth alignment structure are formed on the second substrate, for controlling an alignment of the liquid crystal. At least one auxiliary alignment structure is also formed on the first substrate for controlling an alignment of liquid crystals. The first and second alignment structures extend linearly in different directions from each other in a pixel, and the third and fourth alignment structures extend parallel to the first and second alignment structures, respectively. Also, the auxiliary alignment structure extends substantially along an edge of the pixel.

Liquid crystal display device with multiple alignment structures

There is provided a liquid crystal panel capable of maintaining a cell gap and preventing generation of air bubbles. In the liquid crystal panel having a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between a color filter (CF) substrate and a thin film transistor (TFT) substrate, recesses formed at respective locations of contact holes each for connecting a drain metal layer and a pixel electrode to each other are filled with respective hole-filling columnar layers. At the same time, the cell gap between the CF substrate and the TFT substrate is maintained by cell gap-maintaining columnar layers. The columnar layers are simultaneously formed by subjecting a photosensitive resin to exposure and development. As a result, a reliable liquid crystal panel which does not suffer from air bubbles remaining in the recesses formed at the locations of the contact holes, and capable of effectively maintaining the cell gap with high productivity at low costs.

Liquid crystal panel and method of manufacturing the same

A liquid crystal display device of the present invention has a structure in which vertically aligned liquid crystal is sealed between a TFT substrate and a CF substrate. Pixel electrodes in which slits are provided are formed on the TFT substrate, while cell gap holding spacers and domain defining projections are formed on the CF substrate. For example, positive type photoresist is coated on a common electrode. Then, first exposure is executed by using a mask for light-shielding spacer forming regions and projection forming regions, and then second exposure is executed by using a mask for light-shielding the spacer forming regions. Then, the photoresist is developed. Accordingly, the spacers and the projections, each having a different height, can be formed simultaneously.

A liquid crystal display device including two substrates, with a pixel electrode formed on one substrate and an opposite electrode formed on the other substrate. The device also includes an alignment film formed on the opposite electrode, a protrusion formed between the opposite electrode and the alignment film, spherical spacers, liquid crystal, and an alignment film protrusion formed by the alignment film in an area corresponding to the protrusion, such that the protrusion causes the alignment film protrusion to protrude toward the liquid crystal. The alignment film protrusion is recessed on a side opposite one of the substrates and regulates an alignment direction of the liquid crystal contacting it. Further, the alignment film protrusion includes a recessed portion, within an outer surface thereof, within which at least one spherical spacer is seated, whereby the recessed portion reduces compressive stress exerted on the substrates by the spherical spacer seated therein.

A method of manufacturing a liquid crystal display device includes preparing a pair of substrates that have a structure P1 having a height Hp1 and a structure P2 having a height Hp2, the heights Hp1 and Hp2 satisfying a relationship of(&#x3bc;m) &#x2266;Hp1&#x2212;Hp2&#x2266;1.0 (&#x3bc;m); controlling a dropping amount V of liquid crystal so that a cell gap G1 that is determined by the dropping amount V of liquid crystal, the height Hp1 and the height Hp2 satisfying a relationship of Hp2&#x3c;G1&#x3c;Hp1; dropping the controlled dropping amount V of liquid crystal on one of the pair of substrates; and attaching the pair of substrates in a vacuum followed by returning to an atmospheric pressure to fill in the liquid crystal between the pair of substrates.
