A variable geometry radial turbine wherein a plurality of pivotable vanes are provided in the portion through which a gas is introduced into a turbine wheel which is disposed in a turbine housing. The pivotable vanes can be moved for the purpose of opening and closing a part of a gas introduction area whereby the gas flow rate is continuously changed.

Variable capacity radial flow turbine

A variable capacity radial flow turbine includes a turbine housing which incorporates a turbine wheel and which forms a working gas passageway that leads to the turbine wheel and that is divided into two parts. The working gas passageway is provided with a pivotable plate-like member, so that the flow rate of the working gas flowing into the turbine wheel can be continuously changed by shifting the position of this member and thus opening or closing part of a working gas intake.

An undetachable flange joint characterized in that it essentially comprises a pair of semicircular clamp halves of which cross-sectional configuration is designed to tightly fit the outer configuration of a pair of tapered flanges to be joined, said clamp halves having curled portions at their both ends, and two annular links adapted to be engaged around the respective curled end portions so that the pair of flanges are tightly joined to one another by firmly holding the whole flanges by means of the clamp halves under wedging force. A method of manufacturing an undetachable flange joint characterized in that it is practiced by way of the steps of preparing two semicircular clamp halves having a concave cross-sectional configuration by press forming a strip of metal sheet, arranging said clamp halves opposite to one another with their one end part having an annular link hung therearound, allowing said one end part to be subjected to curling operation in such a manner as to encase the annular link in the curled end portion to joint the clamp halves at the one end thereof, mounting the pair of half assembled clamp halves around the whole flanges to be joined to one another, hanging an annular link around the other end part, and allowing the latter to be subjected to another curling operation in the same manner as described above so as to joint the clamp halves at the other end thereof.

Method of manufacturing undetachable flange joint

A method of making a clamp used for a supercharger in an internal combustion engine is initiated by cutting out an unworked clamp half from a plate material. The half is then formed such that it is semicircular in front elevation and the opposite ends extend outwardly. Other clamp half is made in the same manner. An unworked link is cut out from a plate material and then its plane strain is corrected. Further, the link is chamfered and hardened. The halves are arranged in circle and the worked link is inserted into one ends of the halves. Finally, these ends are curled around the link.
