A method and apparatus for punching holes in a stack of sheets using a hole puncher. The method includes the steps of activating the hole puncher, determining whether the hole puncher has completely punched a hole in the stack of sheets, and repeating the activating step in response to the determining step until the hole punching is successful. The method also includes determining whether a reference number of unpunched sheets, which is not greater than a single punch capacity of the hole puncher, has been stacked. Upon determining that the reference number of sheets has been reached, the method includes discontinuing the stacking of further sheets and applying a punching operation to the reference number of sheets. The method also includes reinitiating the stacking operation if the number of sheets to be stacked is greater than the reference number of sheets. The invention also includes an apparatus for carrying out the noted method steps. Thus, a large quantity of sheets can be punched under the invention without having to enhance the structure of the hole puncher.

A sheet handling apparatus is provided adjacent to an image forming apparatus. The sheet handling apparatus staples sheets discharged from the image forming apparatus, and it includes a plurality of bins, a stapler, a discharge mechanism, and a stack tray. The sheets are stapled while they are nipped by the discharge mechanism. The bins store the sheets supplied from the image forming apparatus. The stapler staples the sheets stored in the bins. The discharge mechanism discharges the stapled sheets from the bins frontward with respect to the image forming apparatus, where an operator normally stands. The sheet storer is conveyable in both a vertical and a lateral direction. The stack tray is located alongside the front of the image forming apparatus, and stores the sheets discharged by the discharge mechanism.

Each of the bin trays is moved through a predetermined moving passage, and the moving passage includes a main portion and a by-pass caused to detour from the main portion to the upstream or downstream side. The sorter also has an automatic stapler and an automatic punch. When the bin tray and sheets collected thereon are positioned in the by-pass end portion of the by-pass, the sheets are positioned at a stapling position relative to the automatic stapler, and the sheets are positioned at an automatically punching position relative to the automatic punch.

An automatic document conveying device for an image processing machine in which a transparent plate, on which to place a document to be processed, is disposed on the upper surface of the housing. The automatic document conveying device includes a document table for holding documents to be processed, a document receiving tray for receiving documents after they have been processed, and means for feeding documents from the document table through the processing to the document receiving tray. A document delivery roller moves the document from the transparent plate, following processing of the document, along a document delivery passage. Document discharge rollers located at the downstream end of the document delivery passage move the document from that point to the document receiving tray. The document delivery rollers are driven at a higher speed than are the document discharge rollers. A one-way clutch permits the document discharge rollers to be rotated at a higher peripheral speed than the peripheral speed at which the document discharge rollers are driven. Consequently, a document being delivered by the document delivery rollers to the document discharge rollers causes the document discharge rollers to rotate at the higher speed of the document delivery rollers. This prevents the document from bending and being damaged. Once the trailing end of the document has cleared the document delivery rollers, the document discharge rollers are driven at their lower speed, and so the document speed is reduced and the document delivered onto the document receiving tray at this lower speed, permitting the forming of a stack of delivered documents.

The document delivery passage includes a common passage extending from the other end edge of the transparent plate, a first branched passage extending from the downstream end of the common passage to the first document receiving tray, and a second branched passage extending from the downstream end of the common passage to the second document receiving tray. The automatic document conveying device further includes a document sending means for delivering a plurality of documents on the document table piece by piece to the document introduction passage, a document introduction means for introducing the document sent out to the document introduction passage onto the document plate, a document conveying means for conveying the document along the transparent plate, and a document discharging means for discharging the document delivered to the common passage of the document delivery passage by the document conveying means through the common passage, the first branched passage of the second branched passage in the document delivery passage.

A copying paper feeding device comprises a first and a second paper loading sections to be loaded with a stack of copying paper sheets, a first and a second paper delivery mechanism disposed respectively in the first and second paper loading sections, a first and a second paper introducing passage extending respectively from the first and second paper loading sections and terminating in a common point of junction, a paper conveying passage extending from the point of junction, a first conveyer roller pair disposed in the first paper introducing passage, and a second conveyor roller pair disposed at the point of junction or at an upstream part of the paper conveying passage. In performing a copying process, either the first or second paper delivery mechanism is selectively actuated. The first and the second conveyor roller pairs are interlocked with each other, and adapted to be started after the first or second paper delivery mechanism has been actuated. When the first paper delivery mechanism is selectively actuated, the roller pairs are started earlier by the time required to convey a copying paper from the first conveyor roller pair to the second conveyor roller pair than when the second paper delivery mechanism is actuated. The first conveyor roller pair exerts position-correcting and synchronism-adjusting actions on a copying paper delivered from the first paper loading section, and the second conveyor roller pair exerts position-correcting and synchronism-adjusting actions on a copying paper delivered from the second paper loading section.

A sorter comprising a plurality of vertically arranged bin trays. The bin trays have widthwise projecting trunnions at least in one side thereof. The trunnions are stacked vertically and can move in the stacking direction along a predetermined moving passage. The sorter further comprises a transfer mechanism for elevating and lowering the trunnions successively one by one along the predetermined transfer passage and successively spacing adjacent bin trays vertically at their sheet receiving ends to form a sheet receiving opening. The transfer mechanism has a pair of cooperating rotating cam plates. Each of the rotating cam plates has at least one trunnion receiving groove extending radially and being opened at its radial outside end and an outer circumferential cam surface continuously extending circumferentially excepting the site of the trunnion receiving groove. The outer circumferential cam surface is a convoluted surface whose radius progressively increases in a predetermined rotating direction.

A sorter comprising a plurality of vertically arranged movable bin trays and a transfer mechanism for elevating and lowering the bin trays successively. Follower projecting portions, projecting in a predetermined direction, are provided respectively on the bin tray. The projecting lengths of the projecting portions increase stepwise from the bottom to the top of the bin tray arrangement. The transfer mechanism includes ring-like cams disposed opposite to the follower projecting portions so as to be free to engage the follower projecting portions and to rotate about a central axis extending in the predetermined direction and to move in the direction of the central axis, with the length of the cam extending forwardly in the direction of the central axis, progressively increasing from a given angular point in a predetermined rotating direction, and a driving unit for rotating the cam in the predetermined rotating direction, causing the cam to move forwardly in the direction of the central axis and also for rotating the cam in a reverse rotating direction by that distance rearwardly in the direction of the central axis.
