Various embodiments are directed to a connector for coupling optical signals to a semiconductor device. In one embodiment, the connector includes a connector member having a recessed portion to arrange a plurality of waveguides formed side-by-side in a transverse direction. A backup member is arranged within the recessed portion interposing the plurality of waveguides between the connector member and the backup member. The recessed portion includes a plurality of ridges arranged in a staggered pattern relative to the plurality of waveguides for positioning the plurality of waveguides relative to the connector.

Connector for waveguide and alignment method

Waveguide connectors include a ferrule having first alignment features. A waveguide has one or more a topclad portions, each with a waveguide core, second alignment features fastened to the first alignment features, and underclad portion that is thicker than the one or more topclad portions.

Single-mode polymer waveguide connector

An optical device includes a substrate including a waveguide array formed therein, each waveguide having a reflective surface; a lens array unit including a waveguide-side lens array arranged facing the waveguide array so each lens of the lens array is aligned with the corresponding reflective surface; and a connector unit including an optical transmission path-side lens array arranged and fixed so each lens of the lens array is aligned with the corresponding lens in the waveguide-side lens array, the plurality of inserted optical transmission paths aligned with the corresponding lens in the optical transmission path-side lens array.

Optical connecting method

An optical module includes: at least one optical waveguide provided on a surface of a substrate; a plurality of grooves provided in the optical waveguide on the surface of the substrate and having both a surface orthogonal to the surface of the substrate and an inclined surface; multiple pairs of light-emitting and light-receiving elements aligned with the plurality of grooves in the optical waveguide and provided so as to correspond to light of different wavelengths on the optical waveguide; and a plurality of light-selecting filters each provided on an inclined surface of the plurality of grooves in the optical waveguide and reflecting light of the wavelength corresponding to the light-emitting element in the respective pair of light-emitting and light-receiving elements towards the optical waveguide, and selectively reflecting light of the corresponding wavelength from the light propagating through the optical waveguide towards the corresponding pair of light-emitting and light-receiving elements.

Optical module and method for manufacturing optical module

Embodiments of the present invention provide optical modules which input and output wavelength multiplexed optical signals to and from an optical waveguide, and a manufacturing method thereof. In one embodiment, an optical module comprises light emitting and light receiving element pairs that are positioned on grooves of one or more optical waveguides, where each light emitting and light receiving element pair corresponds to a different wavelength of light. Each light emitting and light receiving element pair includes an optical pin comprising an inclined surface and a light selecting filter that are configured to reflect light of a corresponding wavelength from an optical waveguide to the light receiving element, and from the light emitting element to the optical waveguide.

Optical modules for wavelength multiplexing

Waveguide connectors and methods of forming the same include heating a polymer waveguide having one or more waveguide cores and alignment features to a first temperature. A ferrule having alignment features is heated to the first temperature, the ferrule having a different coefficient of thermal expansion from the polymer waveguide. The alignment features of the polymer waveguide align with the alignment features of the ferrule when the polymer waveguide and the ferrule are heated to the first temperature. The polymer waveguide is positioned on the ferrule without a waveguide backfilm. The alignment features of the polymer waveguide are bonded to the corresponding alignment features of the ferrule.

Optical communication module. The optical communication module includes an optical-connector input and output unit that is provided on a first face of a substrate, the optical-connector input and output unit including a first light reflection member which is arranged at each of N grid points and which reflects incident light at a right angle; an optical-device optical input and output unit that is provided in adjacent to the optical-connector input and output on the first face of the substrate including N second light reflection members which are arranged in a linear manner with spaces therebetween; a plurality of optical waveguides that are provided on the first face of the substrate; and an optical device that is provided on a second face of the substrate, the optical device including N light-receiving units or N light-emitting units which are aligned with N light transmission units of the substrate.

Optical communication module

An optical device and a method of manufacturing an optical device. The optical device includes: a conversion means for converting propagation light propagating through an optical waveguide into parallel light and for outputting the parallel light; and a first lens means for focusing the parallel light outputted from the conversion means on a core of an optical fiber. The method includes: converting propagation light propagating through an optical waveguide into parallel light; outputting the parallel light; and focusing, using a first lens, the parallel light on a core of an optical fiber.

Optical device

Waveguide connectors include a ferrule having first alignment features. A polymer waveguide has one or more a topclad portions, each with a waveguide core, second alignment features fastened to the first alignment features, and underclad portion that is thicker than the one or more topclad portions. The polymer waveguide has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion than the ferrule and is fastened to the ferrule under tension.

Single mode polymer waveguide connector

A structure includes a combination of a stub fabricated on a polymer and a groove fabricated on a silicon (Si) chip, with which an adiabatic coupling can be realized by aligning a (single-mode) polymer waveguide (PWG) array fabricated on the polymer with a silicon waveguide (SiWG) array fabricated on the silicon chip. The stub fabricated on the polymer is patterned according to a nano-imprint process along with the PWG array in a direction in which the PWG array is fabricated. The groove fabricated on the silicon chip is fabricated along a direction in which the SiWG array is fabricated.

Alignment of single-mode polymer waveguide (PWG) array and silicon waveguide (SiWG) array of providing adiabatic coupling

An optical device including a diffraction grating structure. The device provides optical coupling that allows the diffraction efficiency and the coupling efficiency of signal light whose direction to travel is changed (or diffracted) by a grating to be independently determined. The optical device includes: a first layer forming one end of an optical waveguide; and a second layer disposed on the first layer and having a lower refractive index than the first layer. According to one embodiment, the second layer includes a diffraction grating structure that diffracts light that has entered the second layer from the first layer and outputs the light from the second layer to the first layer. In another embodiment, a third layer disposed on the second layer and includes the diffraction grating structure.
