A negative electrode active material of lithium secondary battery include: at least one of a petroleum-derived green coke and a coal-derived green coke, and at least one of a petroleum-derived calcined coke and a coal-derived calcined coke within a mass ratio range of 90:10 to 10:90; a phosphorous compound within a range of 0.1 to 6.0 parts by mass in amount equivalent to phosphor relative to 100 parts by mass of the at least one of the green cokes and the at least one of the calcined cokes; and a boron compound within a range of 0.1 to 6.0 parts by mass in amount equivalent to boron relative to 100 parts by mass of the at least one of the green cokes and the at least one of the calcined cokes.

This invention relates to a graphite material for negative electrode of lithium secondary battery. This graphite material is obtained by carbonizing the pulverized green coke to yield coke, adding one kind or more of boron or a compound thereof to the coke, graphitizing the resulting mixture and controlling the particle size of the product graphite. This graphite material for negative electrode is characterized by showing a tap density of 0.95 g/cmor more after tapping 20 times or 1.15 g/cmor more after tapping 300 times and a BET specific surface area of 1.5 m/g or less. A lithium secondary battery made by the use of this graphite material for negative electrode has a large discharge capacity and suffers little loss during charging and discharging.

This invention relates to a fuel cell separator of excellent electrical conductivity, gas impermeability and strength. The composition for a fuel cell separator of this invention comprises a resin binder with a viscosity of 0.01&#x2013;0.5 Pa&#xb7;s at 150&#xb0; C. and a viscosity of 3 Pa&#xb7;s or more at 25&#xb0; C. and graphite particles at a weight ratio of 1:(5&#x2013;15) and a curing accelerator. The resin binder is exemplified by an epoxy resin binder composed of an epoxy resin and a curing agent for the epoxy resin. The process for producing the fuel cell separator of this invention is practiced by kneading and molding the aforementioned composition for a fuel cell separator and curing above the curing temperature of the composition. The fuel cell separator of this invention to be obtained by the aforementioned process shows a bulk density of 1.90 g/cmor more, a sheet resistance (areal pressure, 0.5 MPa) of 40 m &#x3a9;cmor less, a gas permeability of 1&#xd7;10cmor less and a flexural strength of 30 MPa or more.

Provided are an amorphous coke for a special carbon material characterized in that it is an amorphous coke obtained by blending a coal tar base heavy oil and/or a petroleum base heavy oil with a resin and subjecting the mixture to thermal decomposition polycondensation; it has a larger thermal expansion coefficient than that of a coke obtained from a heavy oil alone; and a molded article of the coke is shrunk by 0.3% or more in terms of a volume change rate before and after the treatment when it is subjected to graphitizing treatment, and a production process of an amorphous coke for a special carbon material characterized in that in subjecting a coal tar base heavy oil or a petroleum base heavy oil to thermal decomposition polycondensation, the raw material is blended with a resin to modify a coke crystal structure.
