A signal processing unit performs preprocessing, demosaic processing and color reproduction processing on an image signal. A control unit detects an image area having undergone a characteristic change exceeding a predetermined change amount, by using an image signal before the reproduction processing and an image signal after the color reproduction processing. The control unit associates area information indicating the detection result of the image area having undergone a characteristic change exceeding a predetermined change amount with the image signal after the color reproduction processing, and records the area information on a recording medium, or outputs the area information to an external device. Thus, it becomes possible to detect an image area where a control change caused by color reproduction processing is unnatural.

An image processing apparatus includes a direction detection unit configured to detect a direction of a picture pattern of each picture in an input image having a predetermined color pixel array; a moire detection unit configured to detect a moire level by periodicity of a pixel value of each pixel in the input image depending on the direction as a moire index value; and a moire suppression unit configured to suppress the moire level in the input image based on the moire index value detected by the moire detection unit. An image processing apparatus is configured to include: illumination controlling section for controlling emission of light with a setting amount of light; region extracting section for independently extracting the image data of an object region indicating the object, and image data of a background region indicating background other than the object from reference image data out of two pieces of image data, respectively obtained at each change in an amount of the light from the illumination unit; filter processing section for applying a filtering process with the blurring effect to at least one piece of the image data of the object region and the background region, both extracted by the region extracting section; and combining section for generating combined image data of the reference image data with the image data subject to the filtering processing out of the image data of the object region and the background region.
