Backup metadata deletion based on backup data deletion is described. A system receives a request to delete a backup data set associated with a host, a path, and a backup time. The system identifies a backup metadata object associated with the host and the path. The system determines whether the requested backup time is the earliest backup time associated with any backup data set associated with the host. The system determines whether the identified backup metadata object is a backup metadata deletion object associated with the backup time if the backup time is the earliest backup time. The system deletes the identified backup metadata object if the identified backup metadata object is a backup metadata deletion object associated with the backup time.

Backup metadata deletion based on backup data deletion

Disclosed are systems and methods for using a metadata agent to collect metadata from a client computer system and including receiving the metadata associated with files used by applications executing in the client computer system. The metadata belong to objects stored in a volume associated with the client computer system. The metadata is collected in real time by the metadata agent executing in the client computer system as a background task. The metadata is stored in a metadata base associated with a metadata server. A request to search the metadata is received from a backup server associated with the metadata server. The search request includes search criteria. A search engine associated with the metadata server searches the metadata in the metadata database to find a match based on the search criteria. A search result is transmitted from the metadata server to the backup server which uses the search result to search for objects in the backup data.

A backup application detects a request to perform a backup operation. In response, the backup application performs a discovery process to identify the critical services and components of a server. The backup application includes a user interface to display the critical services and components to an administrator. The critical services and components are then backed up to a backup storage device. The collection of critical services and components can then be recovered to a target server when a recovery operation is needed.

Simplified system backup protection and recovery

A method of creating a synthetic backup set which can be used as a baseline for subsequent incremental backup or for the restoration of a data volume. The method includes copying a first data object from a first backup set to a memory media for storing the synthetic backup set, and copying a second data object from a second backup set to the memory media. The second data object is copied to the memory media when both the first and second backup sets are open for read access. In one embodiment, the first backup set data of data objects is stored on a first magnetic tape, and the second backup set data of data objects is stored on a second magnetic tape.
