A method of calibrating a transmitter chain in a phased array system in which a lower guard band is assigned to a lower side of an operating carrier of a communication channel and an upper guard band is assigned an upper side of the operating carrier includes injecting a first calibration tone into the transmitter chain and detecting its arrival at the end of the transmitter chain, at which point a first detected calibration signal is generated. The first detected calibration signal and the injected first calibration tone are then compared to produce a first comparison signal. The transmitter chain's phase and/or gain is then adjusted based on this first comparison signal. The first calibration tone located within one of the lower and upper guard bands of the communication channel of the transmitter chain.

Non-disruptive phased array calibration for FDD and TDD communication systems

An electronic circuit including: a differential multiplier circuit with a first differential input and a second differential input and a differential output; and a phase locked loop (PLL) circuit including: (1) a balanced differential mixer circuit with a first differential input electrically connected to the differential output of the differential multiplier circuit, a second differential input, and an output; (2) a loop filter having an output and an input electrically connected to the output of the balanced differential mixer circuit; and (3) a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) circuit having an input electrically connected to the output of the loop filter and with an output electrically feeding back to the second differential input of the balanced differential mixer circuit.

Precision high frequency phase adders

A method for initializing a phase adder circuit including a multiplier circuit with its two inputs receiving signals of frequency f, a mixer circuit, an amplifier circuit, a low pass loop filter, and a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), the method including: during a first phase, determining a reference voltage which when applied to the VCO causes it to produce a signal having a frequency of nf; during a second phase, supplying a signal of frequency nfto a first input of the mixer and a signal of frequency (nf+&#x394;f) to a second input of the mixer; and determining an adjustment signal which when applied to the amplifier circuit causes the amplifier circuit to output a signal having a DC component equal to the reference voltage; and during a third phase, forming a primary phase locked loop (PLL) circuit including the mixer, the amplifier circuit, the low pass loop filter and the VCO; and applying the adjustment signal to the amplifier circuit.

Initialization method for precision phase adder

A method of calibrating a phased array including an array of antenna elements, RF communication circuits each of which is electrically coupled to a different corresponding antenna element within the array of antenna elements, and a signal feed network that electrically couples a first signal line to second signal lines, wherein each second signal line is electrically coupled to a different corresponding RF communication circuit among the RF communication circuits, the method involving: performing a first phase of a calibration operation, the first phase of the calibration operation involving calibrating the signal feed network independent of the RF communication circuits; and performing a second phase of the calibration operation, the second phase of the calibration operation involving calibrating, independent of the signal feed network, each of the RF communication circuits until all RF communication circuits among the RF communication circuits are calibrated.

Active array calibration

Techniques for achieving high average spectrum efficiency in a wireless system are disclosed. In one particular embodiment, the techniques may be realized as a method of communicating with a wireless station comprising defining a plurality of beams to be generated by a beam-forming device, defining a set of beam groups wherein each beam group is a different subset of beams of the plurality of beams; repeatedly cycling through the set of beam groups by sequentially generating each group of beams among the set of beam groups; identifying a beam group among the set of beam groups which yields a best communication link with a wireless station; and scheduling communications with the wireless station to occur via the identified beam group when the identified beam group is being generated.

In accordance with some embodiments, methods for controlling the second order intercept point in a receiver are provided, the methods comprising: generating an amplitude modulated test tone; causing the test tone to be received by a receiver; determining a characteristic of a second order intercept point of the receiver based on the received test tone; and based on the characteristic, adjusting a parameter of the receiver. In accordance with some embodiments, systems for controlling the second order intercept point in as receiver are provided, the systems comprising: a test tone generator that generates an amplitude modulated test tone; a receiver that receives the test tone; a correlator that determines a characteristic of a second order intercept point of the receiver based on the received test tone; and digital logic that, based on the characteristic, adjusts a parameter of the receiver.

A transmitter system including: a bidirectional signaling (BDS) network having first and second networks for carrying first and second carrier signals, and having a set of n phase synchronous location pairs (a, b); and also including tunable transmitter circuits for driving an antenna array, each tunable transmitter circuit having an output line for carrying an output signal and first and second input lines electrically connected to the first and second networks of the BDS network at locations of a corresponding one of the set of phase synchronous location pairs, and including a multiplier having a first input electrically connected to the first input line of that tunable transmitter circuit; a phase setting circuit electrically connected to the multiplier for controlling the phase of the output signal of that tunable transmitter circuit; and an amplitude setting circuit for controlling the amplitude of the output signal of that tunable transmitter circuit.
