An antenna has at least one resonant frequency within a millimeter wave frequency range. The antenna includes a ground plane disposed in a first plane, the ground plane having a first aperture at which the antenna is fed with an RF signal by a feed line; and a main patch disposed in a second plane parallel to the first plane, the first and second planes spaced apart to form a first cavity between the ground plane and the main patch, the main patch having a second aperture.

Patch antenna for millimeter wave communications

A balanced planar antenna having at least one mmWave resonant frequency includes a ground plane, first and second antenna elements, an arm that connects the second antenna element to the ground plane, a feed line connected to the first antenna element and for feeding a radio frequency signal to the first antenna element, and a balun that connects the first antenna element to the ground plane. The ground plane, first antenna element, second antenna element, arm, feed line and balun each are disposed on a substrate and are coplanar.

The present invention relates to a method for operating a wireless communication system. The wireless communication system comprises a base station and a terminal. The terminal comprises a plurality of antenna elements and provides at least two antenna array configurations comprising a first antenna array configuration comprising at least two antenna elements having same radio transmission characteristics and a second antenna array configuration comprising at least two antenna elements having different radio transmission characteristics. According to the method, a selection process for selecting and an antenna array configuration of the at least two antenna array configurations is triggered and for each of the at least two antenna array configurations a corresponding figure of merit is determined. The corresponding figure of merit is determined based on corresponding pilot signals received from the base station via the corresponding antenna array configuration. Depending on the figures of merit, an antenna array configuration is activated.

Operating a wireless communication system

A MIMO communication method of performing MIMO communication between a base station having a plurality of antennas and each of a plurality of terminals covered by the base station using uplink data slots and downlink data slots that are alternately placed on a time axis. The method includes, in the base station, despreading a received signal that is transmitted from each of the plurality of terminals demodulating the transmission data transmitted from a respective terminal on the basis of the value of the estimated channel; decoding a received signal included in the uplink data slots, estimating a current channel between each of all antennas of the base station and the respective terminal; and comparing the stored value of the estimated channel with a value of the estimated current channel and updating the stored value of the estimated channel to the value of the estimated current channel.

According to exemplary embodiments of the present invention, non-uniform helical antennas are described for use in two or more frequency hyperbands. For example, non-uniform helical antennas can be designed according to the present invention for usage in portable terminals capable of operating both at 800 MHz and at 1900 MHz. Tuning to both resonance frequencies can be accomplished by varying parameters of the helical antennas including, for example, the pitch angle, coil diameter, length and number and spacing of the coil turns.

According to exemplary embodiments of the present invention, retractable antennas are described for use in two or more frequency hyperbands. The retractable antennas can include a whip antenna, operable when the retractable antenna is extended and a non-uniform helical antenna, operable when the retractable antenna is retracted. For example, retractable antennas can be designed according to the present invention for usage in portable terminals capable of operating both at 800 MHz and at 1900 MHz. Tuning for the whip antenna is accomplished using a matching circuit. Tuning to both resonance frequencies for the non-uniform helical antenna can be accomplished by varying parameters of the helical structure including, for example, the pitch angle, coil diameter, length and number and spacing of the coil turns.
