Disclosed is the differential application of scalars to compensate pixel degradation. Input image data is associated with a commanded luminance at each of a plurality of pixels. A degradation value is determined for each pixel. Based on the degradation value, an elevated drive current is determined to produce commanded luminance at the pixel. A required scalar is determined for each pixel to hold the elevated drive current from exceeding a drive current threshold. An applied scalar for each pixel is determined for each pixel to be applied to the elevated drive current. For at least some pixels, the applied scalar for a first pixel is based at least on [1] the required scalar of a second pixel and [2] a spatial relationship between the first pixel and the second pixel. Applied scalars are then used to output corrected imagery.

A digital display includes a plurality of pixel rows. For each pixel row, the digital display includes an EM gate driver configured to supply the pixel row with a luminance-controlling signal during each of a plurality of image frames. A luminance controller is configured to instruct the EM gate drivers to supply a pulse-width modulated signal to the plurality of pixel rows. Some pixel rows are supplied with a pulse-width modulated signal starting with an on pulse, and some pixel rows are supplied with a pulse-width modulated signal starting with an off pulse, on the same or different image frames.

Examples are disclosed that relate to mitigating unintended OLED display emissions arising from a proximity sensor emitter located behind an OLED display panel. One example provides a display device comprising an OLED display panel, a proximity sensor having a proximity sensor emitter positioned behind one or more OLED pixels of the OLED display panel with respect to a viewing surface of the OLED display panel, and a proximity emitter mask positioned between the proximity sensor emitter and the one or more OLED pixels to shield the one or more OLED pixels from the proximity sensor emitter.

Display devices, display systems, backlight assemblies, and methods described herein provide compound backlights with edge lighting. In an aspect, the backlight includes a waveguide, first lights, and an array layer. The first lights are arranged along an edge of the waveguide. Each of the first lights transmits light into the waveguide. The array layer is coupled to the waveguide and comprises a reflective layer and second lights. The reflective layer reflects the light transmitted by the first lights into the waveguide. The second lights are arranged between the waveguide and the reflective layer. Each of the second lights transmits light into the waveguide layer through the first surface. In a further aspect, the second lights are oriented away from the waveguide and toward the reflective surface. In another aspect, a compound backlight includes a reflective surface, arranged between a waveguide and second lights, that reflects a portion of received light.

Examples are disclosed that relate to mitigating a piezoelectric response of an organic light emitting diode (OLED) display from static charge. One example provides an electronic device, comprising an organic light emitting diode (OLED) display, the OLED display comprising an organic light emitting layer, a thin film transistor (TFT), a polyimide layer disposed on an opposite side of the TFT as the organic light emitting layer, a buffer layer between the TFT and the polyimide layer, and a conductor positioned to mitigate a piezoelectric response of the polyimide layer to static charge on the OLED display.

Mitigating induced emission in OLED display

Examples are disclosed relating to foldable display devices and methods for folding a display device through a range of degrees at a folding portion. In one example, a display device comprises a rear cover and a cover glass layer extending from a left side of the display device through the folding portion to a right side. A light-emitting layer is between the rear cover and the cover glass layer. A backplate is between the rear cover and the light-emitting layer, with the backplate comprising backplate slots that extend from an upper surface through a lower surface to facilitate bending of the backplate.

The disclosure herein describes a display panel that includes a display area and a non-display area. The example display panel includes a flexible substrate, a touch metal layer, and a metal layer between the flexible substrate and the touch metal layer. Each of the display area and the non-display area include the flexible substrate, the touch metal layer, and the metal layer. The metal layer includes signal lines for transmitting signals between the display area and the non-display area. The non-display area includes a bending area with the touch metal layer being disposed on the metal layer in the non-display area to shield noise from signals transmitted through the signal lines in the bending area from the antenna. The display area includes light emitting diodes and a thin film encapsulation layer disposed between the touch metal layer and the metal layer.

A display assembly includes a display layer with a plurality of display elements to provide display light and form a display image. A first subset of display elements is used while the display assembly is operating in a full visibility mode, and a second subset of display elements is used while the display assembly is operating in a restricted visibility mode. A touch-sensitive layer includes a plurality of conductive traces disposed proximate to the display layer. The plurality of conductive traces are shaped and positioned to block a first portion of the display light while the display assembly is operating in the full visibility mode, and block a second, greater portion of the display light while the display assembly is operating in the restricted visibility mode. A visibility controller is used to switch the display assembly between the full visibility mode and the restricted visibility mode.

An organic light emitting diode (OLED) display system comprises an OLED array and a power management system that includes at least one voltage generator for the OLED array. A timing microcontroller comprises a decoder/encoder configured to receive HDR pixel data and output display pixel data. A portion of the HDR pixel data is sampled and a luminance index value of the sampled portion is determined, where the luminance index value corresponds to a maximum luminance of the sampled portion. The luminance index value is used to control the at least one voltage generator to reduce power consumption of the OLED display system.

An electronic device includes a backlight unit and a liquid crystal layer disposed proximate to the backlight unit. The backlight unit is configured to provide illumination across a viewable display area of the electronic device. The viewable display area includes a plurality of zones. The liquid crystal layer is configured to selectively filter the illumination provided by the backlight unit. A processor is coupled to the backlight unit and to the liquid crystal layer. The processor is configured to determine, based on data indicative of content to be displayed, a respective backlight brightness level of each zone of the plurality of zones and to generate liquid crystal control signaling for the liquid crystal layer. The processor is further configured to adjust the respective backlight brightness levels and/or the liquid crystal control signaling, to compensate for distortions arising from defects in the backlight unit and/or the liquid crystal layer.
