Cross-linked shear-thinning fluids of pectic acid demonstrating increased viscosity with decreasing shear, as well as methods of producing and using the same. A shear-thinning fluid includes an aqueous solution of pectic acid cross-linked by a divalent cation is disclosed. The pectic acid may be present in an amount ranging from about 0.5 to about 3.0% (w/v), the divalent cation may be present at a concentration of from about 0.5 mM to about 7.0 mM, and the viscosity of the shear-thinning fluid increases with decreasing shear. These cross-linked shear-thinning fluids of pectic acid can be utilized for controlled release formulations, cell encapsulation, and 3D printing, and provide for an improved balance between structure fidelity/mechanical stability and cell viability.

Articles including a substrate, a cover glass layer disposed over a top surface of the substrate, and an adhesive layer having a dynamic elastic modulus disposed between a bottom surface of the cover glass layer and the top surface of the substrate. The cover glass layer may have a thickness in the range of 1 micron to 200 microns. The dynamic elastic modulus of the adhesive layer may include a first elastic modulus in the range of 10 kPa to 1000 kPa measured at a stress frequency in the range of 0 Hertz to 5 Hertz and a temperature of 23 degrees C., and a second elastic modulus of 500 MPa or more measured at a stress frequency in the range of 10 Hertz to 1000 Hertz and a temperature of 23 degrees C. The adhesive layer may be optically transparent. The articles may be bendable electronic display devices or bendable electronic display device modules.

A method is described herein of making a textured glass article where the method includes: providing a glass substrate having an initial primary surface and an opposing primary surface; disposing a protective coating on at least one of the initial primary surface or the opposing primary surface; and etching the glass substrate with a hydrofluoric acid-free etchant having a pH of about 7 or less to form a leached layer in the glass substrate.

Methods for replicating a nanopillared surface include applying a nanopillar-forming material to a surface of a replica substrate to form a precursor layer on the replica-substrate surface. A template surface of a nanomask may be contacted to the precursor layer. The nanomask may include a self-assembled polymer layer on a nanomask-substrate surface, the template surface being defined in the self-assembled polymer layer. The self-assembled polymer layer may have nano-sized pores with openings at the template surface. The precursor layer may be cured while the template surface remains in contact with the precursor layer. The nanomask is removed to expose a nanopillared surface having a plurality of nanopillars on the replica-substrate surface. The nanopillars on the replica-substrate surface may correspond to the pores in the template surface. Nanopillared surfaces may be replicated on one side of the replica substrate or on two opposing sides of the replica substrate.

Lighting units include a light source, at least one light-diffusing optical fiber optically coupled to the light source, and a support plate. The at least one light-diffusing optical fiber scatters light that is optically coupled into the at least one light-diffusing optical fiber from the light source. The support plate has a retention groove to which a portion of the at least one light-diffusing optical fiber is coupled. The support plate also includes a perimeter. Methods for fabricating a nanopillared substrate surface include applying a polymer solution containing an amphiphilic block copolymer and a hydrophilic homopolymer to a substrate surface. The amphiphilic block copolymer and the hydrophilic homopolymer in the polymer solution self-assemble on the substrate surface to form a self-assembled polymer layer having hydrophobic domains adjacent to the substrate surface and hydrophilic domains extending into the self-assembled polymer layer. At least a portion of the hydrophilic domains may be removed to form a plurality of pores in the exposed surface of the self-assembled polymer layer. A protective layer may be deposited on the exposed surface as a mask for etching through the plurality of pores to form through-holes. A nanopillar-forming material may be deposited onto the substrate surface via the through-holes. Then, the remaining portion of the self-assembled polymer layer may be removed to expose a nanopillared substrate surface.
