A sensing device comprises a rotationally oscillating proof mass resonator and a detector resonator. The detector resonator, actuated to produce an oscillating signal, is coupled to the proof mass resonator and the frequency of the oscillating signal is modulated by a change of motion of the proof mass resonator.

Frequency modulated micro gyro

An integrated micro-combustion power generator converts hydrocarbon fuel into electricity. The integrated micro-scale power generator includes a micro-machined combustor adapted to convert hydrocarbon fuel into thermal energy and a micro-machined thermoelectric generator adapted to convert the thermal energy into electrical energy. The combustion reaction in the combustor flows in a path in a first plane while the thermal energy flows in a second plane in the generator; the second plane being nearly orthogonal or orthogonal to the first plane. The fuel handler in the combustor is adjacent and thermally isolated from the thermoelectric generator. The fuel handler may include a nozzle and gas flow switch, where the frequency of activation of the gas flow switch controls the amount of the fuel ejected from the nozzle.

Energy-efficient micro-combustion system for power generation and fuel processing

A micro-combustion power system is disclosed. The invention is comprised of a housing that further comprises two flow path volumes, each having generally opposing flow path directions and each generally having opposing configurations. Each flow path volume comprises a pre-heating volume having at least one pre-heating heat exchange structure. Each flow path volume further comprises a combustion volume having a combustion means or structure such as a catalytic material disposed therein Further, each flow path volume comprise a post-combustion volume having at least one post-combustion heat exchange structure. One or more thermoelectric generator means is in thermal communication with at least one of the combustion volumes whereby thermal energy generated by an air/fuel catalytic reaction in the combustion volume is transferred to the thermoelectric generator to convert same to electrical energy for use by an external circuit. A novel element of the invention relates to the opposing configuration and opposing flow path directions of the respective flow path volumes. The pre-heating heat exchange structure in the first flow path volume and the opposing post-combustion heat exchange structure are comprised of a shared, thermally conductive structure and material. In this embodiment, waste heat from the exhaust gas in the post-combustion chamber is thermally transferred to the opposing pre-heating volume to heat the air/fuel mixture therein to a suitable pre-combustion temperature to take advantage of waste heat while better managing thermal/cooling issues of the device during operation.

Micro-combustion power system with dual path counter-flow system

The invention is a frequency modulated (FM) inertial sensing device and method which, in one embodiment, comprises an accelerometer having a proof mass coupled to a nano-resonator element. The nano-resonator element is oscillated at a first predetermined frequency, which may be a first resonant frequency, and is altered to oscillate at a second frequency, which may be a second resonant frequency, in response to a resultant force produced by the acceleration of the proof mass. The degree of change in nano-resonator element output frequency is sensed and processed using suitable processing circuitry as a change in acceleration.

Energy efficient micro combustion system for power generation and fuel processing

A micro gyro consisting of a vibrating micro scale structure produces a signal whose characteristic frequency shifts in proportion to the applied angular velocity. The vibrating structure consists of a suspended proof mass resonator supported on springs and connected to at least one detector resonator. The structure can be made with multiple semiconductor materials such as silicon, poly-silicon, silicon dioxide, and silicon nitride, using one of many MEMS fabrication processes. The proof mass resonator is designed to have two closely coupled resonant frequencies, with one resonant mode for the drive motion and the second resonant mode for the sense motion. Detector resonators are connected to the vibrating structure such that when the proof mass resonator oscillates due to the Coriolis force in its sense mode, the connections to the detector resonators are stressed by the proof mass resonator, thus changing the resonant frequency of the detector resonators. By measuring the shift in the resonant frequency of the detectors, the applied angular rate can be determined.

A micro-image acquisition and transmission system is provided. In a preferred embodiment, the system is comprised of an image acquisition chip comprising an electronic imager, control electronics and a micro powered rotary stage comprising a transceiver array that acts as a hub to optically link a group of distributed image acquisition chips. A preferred embodiment is further comprised of a transceiver array chip comprising one or more micro-powered rotary stages having a transceiver array assembly disposed thereon. The micro-powered rotary stage is supported by a micro-brush bearing.

Micro-image acquisition and transmission system

A signal processing method and device for measuring the input rate of an FM micro-gyro having a modulation frequency Fand having an oscillator sense element having a nominal frequency Fis disclosed. In a first aspect of the invention, the method comprises defining a first time interval Tand a second time interval Tand measuring the first time interval and the second time interval by counting the number of periods of a predetermined reference frequency. The nominal frequency of the oscillator sense element Fis measured along with the modulation frequency F. From these measurements, the proof mass period Nis calculated. The time difference &#x394;t is calculated from the above measurements. The method then comprises calculating a modulation M that produced the measured &#x394;t, preferably using an iterative method. From the above, the input rate &#x3a9; is calculated by dividing M by a sensitivity S of the FM micro-gyro. The above method and other methods for signal processing for measuring the input rate of an FM micro-gyro are disclosed herein.

Frequency modulated micro-gyro signal processing method and device

The invention comprises a lip reading device having a capacitive array for enhanced portable speech recognition. The capacitive array of the invention produces a sequence of signal frames or signal data sets (i.e., digitized output) representative of the proximity and motion of a user's lips at a predetermined sample rate and resolution. The sequence of signal data sets is stored in a first electronic memory and are compared against a reference data set representative of a predetermined acoustic signal stored in a second electronic memory. The attributes of signal data set are compared against the reference data set for likely data matches based on predetermined criteria.

Portable lip reading sensor system

A device and method for the detection of one or more gases is disclosed. A MEMS structure comprising a micro gas cell array is provided comprising one or more micro gas cells having a predetermined gas therein. The micro gas cells define an optical path therethrough and may comprise a micro lens. Electromagnetic energy from a scene is collected and passed through one or more micro gas cells whereby electromagnetic energy emitted or reflected from a gas of interest in a scene is absorbed by a substantially identical gas contained within a micro gas cell. In this manner, the micro gas cell acts as a spectral filter. The electromagnetic outputs of the micro gas cells, which may comprise one or more spectrally inert micro gas cells, are received by one or more detector elements such as a photon detector array. The ratio of the outputs of the related detector elements are computed by processing electronics, resulting in the identification of the gas of interest.

Micro gas cell array device and method

The thermoelectric detector consists of an absorber structure supported by two electrically connected beams made of thermoelectric materials such as polysilicon, polysilicon/germanium, bismuth-telluride, skutterrides, superlattice structures, nano-composites and other materials. One end of the thermoelectric beam connects to the absorber structure; the other end connects to the substrate. Infrared radiation incident on the absorber heats up the absorber, resulting in a temperature gradient along the length of the thermoelectric legs, and generating an electrical voltage. The detector arrays are fabricated using micromachining process. The absorber structure is formed over a sacrificial material that is removed at the end of the processing, leaving the detector suspended and thermally isolated. The sacrificial processing method enables the production of small pixel thermoelectric detectors in large two-dimensional arrays with high sensitivity.

Large format thermoelectric infrared detector and method of fabrication

An optical switching system that switches the path of an optical signal by moving a microstructure onto which a light-guiding structure is mounted. The microstructure is formed by a MEMs and semiconductor process to be integral to the substrate. The light-guiding structure may include waveguides. The microstructure moves from one position to another position (e.g., laterally, vertically, rotationally) such that incoming optical signals align over a small air gap to different optical paths, depending on the position of the movable microstructure. As a result, the optical signal propagate along different optical paths (e.g., straight pass through or cross over) depending on the position of the movable microstructure. The optical paths have a large radii of curvature so as to change the direction of the optical signal gradually, thereby reducing insertion losses. By combining optical switches in both the vertical and horizontal directions, the resulting optical switching system handles switching in three dimensions.

Low loss optical switching system

A 1&#xd7;N or N&#xd7;1 optical switch based on a plurality of movable MEMS-created platforms, each carrying a light guiding structure such as a waveguide, where the position of the platforms determines which optical path is connected through the optical switch. The MEMS-created platforms are formed integral with the substrate of the optical switch. The waveguides residing on the movable platforms gradually change the direction of the optical signal in order to minimize losses. The movable platforms can move linearly or rotationally, for example. Also described is a method for fabricating such an optical switch and its components by etching from the bottom of the substrate and through the oxide.

1&#xd7;N or N&#xd7;1 optical switch having a plurality of movable light guiding microstructures

An improved device, which may act as a variable attenuator, changes the optical intensity of an optical signal by moving a platform onto which a light transmissive structure such as a waveguide is disposed. The light transmissive structure is positioned and aligned to receive an optical signal and positioned and aligned to transmit the optical signal. By moving the light transmissive structure into a position of reduced alignment with an input source, the light transmissive structure may receive less or none of the optical signal, thereby attenuating it. Alternatively, by moving the light transmissive structure into a position of reduced alignment with an output structure, the light transmissive structure may transmit less or none of the optical signal, thereby attenuating its transmission.

Method and apparatus for changing the optical intensity of an optical signal using a movable light transmissive structure

Numerous novel structures and methods are presented for their ability to correct angular and offset alignment errors caused by thermal distortion of a device formed out of dissimilar materials, such as a movable platform and waveguide coupled to a fixed platform and another waveguide. A flexure connected between two platforms corrects offset alignment errors along the centerline axis of the flexure. Thermal distortion is corrected also by varying the relative size of the two platforms and the addition of slots and/or extraneous waveguides. A waveguide may be sandwiched between two matching materials, with or without an extra thermal compensation layer portion. A method uses simple processes to build a substrate with matching waveguides on each side of the substrate. Another simple method creates a suspended structure by using simple semiconductor processes.
