A packaging system has a peelable seal section which includes a first sealing layer and a second sealing layer such that the first sealing layer contacts the second sealing layer to form a peelable seal. The first sealing layer includes thermoplastic polymer or a blend of thermoplastic polymers, an organoclay dispersed within the thermoplastic polymer, a first additional inorganic additive component dispersed within the thermoplastic polymer and a second additional inorganic additive component dispersed within the thermoplastic polymer. The first additional additive component and/or the second additional additive component is selected from the group consisting of calcium carbonate, hydrated magnesium silicate (talc), magnesium carbonate, titanium oxide, magnesium oxide, magnesium sulfate, barium sulfate, barium aluminates, barium borate, barium silicate and combinations thereof.

Peelable sealant containing thermoplastic composite blends for packaging applications

A packaging system has a peelable seal section which includes a first sealing layer and a second sealing layer such that the first sealing layer contacts the second sealing layer to form a peelable seal. The first sealing layer includes thermoplastic polymer or a blend of thermoplastic polymers, an organoclay dispersed within the thermoplastic polymer, and an additional inorganic additive component, such as calcium carbonate, dispersed within the thermoplastic polymer. The peelable seal has achieved synergistic effect and offers high thermal conductivity, great caulkability and is consistent over a broad range of sealing temperatures without loss of desired peelable seal functionality as the seals age.

A tri-block copolymer is disclosed for use as an impact modifier in polyamide compounds also containing a compatibilizer, preferably also having reinforcing organoclay exfoliated and dispersed therein. The tri-block copolymer comprises an aromatic monomer, an olefin monomer, and a alkyl (meth)acrylate monomer.

Impact-modified polyamide compounds

Intercalates, exfoliates thereof, and nanocomposite compositions are formed by intercalating a layered silicate material, e.g., a phyllosilicate, with an oligomer or polymer intercalant that is a reaction product of at least one diamine with at least one dicarboxylic acid, to form a polyamide oligomer containing a xylylenediamine component. The oligomer or polymer may be formed in-situ by contacting the layered phyllosilicate with polymerizable monomer reactants using conditions to cause reaction and polymerization in the intercalating composition and intercalation of the resulting oligomer and/or polymer, between platelet layers of the phyllosilicate. An amine functionality of the oligomer or polymer is protonated for ion-exchange with interlayer cations of the phyllosilicate to bond the intercalant to the phyllosilicate platelet, at the protonated amine, at a negative charge site previously occupied by the interlayer cations.

Oligomer-modified layered inorganic compounds and their use in nanocomposites

A resin composition comprising melt blending a polyamide resin such as nylon MXD6 with a polyphenoxy resin. The polyamide resin and the polyphenoxy resin may be combined prior to or after melting and can be sandwiched between two PET layers in a perform mold to form an article capable of blow molding to form a container with improved delamination resistance. Also, intercalated layered materials are prepared by co-intercalation of an onium ion, an aromatic polyamide oligomer or polymer, e.g., nylon MXD6, and a polyphenoxy oligomer or polymer between the planar layers of a swellable layered material, such as a phyllosilicate, preferably a smectite clay. The co-intercalated layered materials are combined with the aromatic polyamide and polyphenoxy resin to form a nanocomposite composition for sandwiching between PET layers to form containers having improved delamination resistance.

Resin compositions, intercalates, nanocomposites and laminates prepared with aromatic polyamide and polyphenoxy polymers

A method of manufacturing a nanocomposite composition comprising forming an intercalating composition comprising 1% to about 90% by weight of a purified sodium smectite clay that contains at least 75% Naions based on the total interlayer exchangeable cations, that has been intercalated and thereby swollen sufficiently for polyamide monomer or oligomer intercalation, with a protonated organic, non-carboxylic acid moiety-containing onium ion swelling agent; and about 10% to about 99% of a lactam ring-containing monomer or oligomer, and heating the intercalating composition to a temperature above the melting point of the lactam to open the lactam ring and polymerize the lactam to form the polyamide while in contact with the smectite clay.

Intercalates, exfoliates and concentrates thereof formed with protonated, non-carboxylic swelling agent and nylon intercalants polymerized in-situ via ring-opening polymerization

Nylon-intercalated (concentrate nylon), layered silicates, in concentrated form, containing at least 6% to about 40% by weight layered silicate, preferably about 8% to about 30% by weight layered silicate, intercalated with a nylon that is polymerized while in contact with the clay, during ring-opening polymerization of the nylon reactants (monomers) and melt processing. The in-situ nylon polymerization reaction to form the concentrate nylon is continued until the number average molecular weight (Mn) of the nylon is about 25,000 or less, preferably 15,000 or less, more preferably about 5,000-10,000, to maintain melt processability of the resulting concentrate.

Intercalates, exfoliates and concentrates thereof formed with low molecular weight; nylon intercalants polymerized in-situ via ring-opening polymerization

A neutral templating route to mesoporous molecular sieves based on H-bonding and self-assembly between neutral primary amine or diamine surfactants (S&deg;) and neutral inorganic precursors (I&deg;) has been used to prepare hexagonal and lamellar mesoporous silicas with site isolated transition metal centers. The templating of neutral metallosilicate precursors (I&deg;) with neutral diamine surfactants (S&deg;&mdash;S&deg;) affords thermally stable pillared lamellar metallosilicates exhibiting complementary framework-confined microporosity and textural mesoporosity while at the same time also providing for template recovery by solvent extraction. These new mesoporous metallosilicate molecular sieves exhibit exceptional catalytic activity for peroxide hydroxylation of benzene and oxidation of substituted aromatics with kinetic diameters that are too large (larger than 6 &angst;) to access the pore structure of the conventional microporous transition metal-substituted molecular sieves such as titano- and vanadosilicates.

Catalytic applications of mesoporous metallosilicate molecular sieves and methods for their preparation

Intercalated layered materials prepared by co-intercalation of a multi-charged onium ion spacing/coupling agent and a matrix polymer between the planar layers of a swellable layered material, such as a phyllosilicate, preferably a smectite clay. The spacing of adjacent layers of the layered materials is expanded at least about 3 &angst;, preferably at least about 5 &angst;, usually to about 15-20 &angst;, e.g., 18 &angst; with the di-charged onium ion spacing/coupling agent. The intercalation of the matrix polymer then increases the spacing between adjacent layers to at least about 15 &angst;, preferably to about 20 &angst; to about 30 &angst;.

LAYERED COMPOSITIONS WITH MULTI-CHARGED ONIUM IONS AS EXCHANGE CATIONS, AND THEIR APPLICATION TO PREPARE MONOMER, OLIGOMER, AND POLYMER INTERCALATES AND NANOCOMPOSITES PREPARED WITH THE LAYERED COMPOSITIONS OF THE INTERCALATES

Layered compositions with multi-charged onium ions as exchange cations, and their application to prepare monomer, oligomer, and polymer intercalates and nanocomposites prepared with the layered compositions of the intercalates

Intercalates formed by contacting a layered material, e.g., a phyllosilicate, with an intercalant surface modifier selected from the group consisting of a compound having an alkyl radical containing at least 6 carbon atoms, a compound containing an aromatic ring, and mixtures thereof, said surface modifier including a matrix material-reactive functional group, to sorb or intercalate the intercalant surface modifier between adjacent platelets of the layered material. Sufficient intercalant surface modifier is sorbed between adjacent platelets to expand the adjacent platelets to at least about 10 &angst;, up to about 100 &angst;. The intercalated complex can be combined with an organic liquid into a viscous carrier material, for delivery of the carrier material, or for delivery of an active compound; or the intercalated complex can be combined with a matrix polymer to form a strong, filled polymer matrix.

Intercalates and exfoliates formed with long chain (C6&plus;) or aromatic matrix polymer-compatible monomeric, oligomeric or polymeric intercalant compounds, and composite materials containing same

Intercalates formed by contacting a layered material, e.g., a phyllosilicate, with an intercalant surface modifier selected from the group consisting of a compound having an alkyl radical containing at least 6 carbon atoms, a compound containing an aromatic ring, and mixtures thereof, said surface modifier including a matrix material-reactive functional group, to sorb or intercalate the intercalant surface modifier between adjacent platelets of the layered material. Sufficient intercalant surface modifier is sorbed between adjacent platelets to expand the adjacent platelets to at least about 10 .ANG., up to about 100 .ANG.. The intercalated complex can be combined with an organic liquid into a viscous carrier material, for delivery of the carrier material, or for delivery of an active compound; or the intercalated complex can be combined with a matrix polymer to form a strong, filled polymer matrix.
