A wound dressing comprises in combination (i) a first wound contact layer which preferably has a positive effect on the healing of the wound, and (ii) a second layer of greater hydrophilicity than the first layer.

Wound dressing

This invention relates to polysaccharide fibres having water absorption properties characterised by the incorporation within the fibres of at least one substance having anti-microbial properties, and to wound dressings formed from said fibres. The polysaccharide fibres are preferably formed from alginate or alginate containing additional polysaccharide materials to give additional absorbency (such as, for example, sodium carboymethyl cellulose). The fibres preferably contain a silver compound as an antimicrobial agent.

Polysaccharide fibres

An absorbent foam material which comprises a solid, cross-linked form of an anionic polymer (e.g. an alginate) and fibers or other cation contributing polymeric particulates which have donated appropriate cations for effecting cross-linking of the anionic polymer. Methods of producing the foam material are also disclosed.

A method of producing a hydrogel product comprises impregnating a coherent fibrous structure with an aqueous solution of a hydrogel precursor material said fibers incorporating cations which are capable of cross-linking said precursor material to form a fiber reinforced hydrogel as the hydrogel product.

A wound treatment composition comprises an amorphous hydrogel incorporating fibers which have provided cations for cross-linking the hydrogel and a bacteria static agent. The composition has a viscosity of 20,000 to 1,000,000 cPs.

A method of producing a dehydrated hydrogel comprises dispensing fibers into an aqueous solution of a hydrogel precursor material incorporating a plasticiser, the fibers incorporating cations which are capable of cross-linking said precursor material to form a hydrogel, and freeze drying the mixture thus produced to provide a dehydrated hydrogel which incorporates said fibers, the dehydrated hydrogel being cross-linked by said cations.
