An optical structure includes an input grating and a multilayer waveplate. The input grating is configured to incouple a first spectrum of received image light. The multilayer waveplate is configured to reflect the first spectrum of the image light incoupled by the input grating in the second polarization orientation and reflect a second spectrum of the image light incoupled by the input grating by diffraction in the first polarization orientation.

A lighting unit for a display panel includes a light distribution module, an array of out-couplers, and a beam spot array generation module. The light distribution module includes a plurality of output waveguides for configurably distributing illuminating light between the output waveguides. Each out-coupler is coupled to an output waveguide and configured to out-couple a portion of the illuminating light to propagate towards the display panel. The beam spot array generation module is configured to receive portions of the illuminating light out-coupled by out-couplers of the array of out-couplers and to convert each portion to illuminate a zone of the display panel with an illuminating light field comprising an array of light spots. Each light spot is configured for illuminating an individual pixel or sub-pixel of the zone of the display panel.

A light projection system includes a light source configured to emit image light and an optical assembly configured to provide positive optical power to the image light and optically correct the image light. The optical assembly comprises a plurality of optical elements configured to correct differential distortion related to the image light across a field of view (FOV) within a threshold amount. The differential distortion is corrected based in part on asymmetry of the plurality of optical elements relative to an optical axis shared by the plurality of optical elements.

Systems and methods for adjusting an image based on pupil size are disclosed. Particularly, a system for adjusting an image being presented on a display includes a processor. The processor is configured to identify a size of a pupil of a user viewing an image presented on the display, determine an intensity map based at least on the size of the pupil, and adjust the intensity values of at least a portion of the image using the intensity map. The intensity map indicates an amount of adjustment to intensity values of at least a portion of the image being displayed.

A scanning display includes a light source and a scanning assembly. The light source is configured to emit source light from a plurality of rows of emitters that are arranged parallel to a first dimension. The scanning assembly includes at least one optical element that conditions the source light. The scanning assembly is configured to scan the conditioned source light along a second dimension that is orthogonal to the first dimension. The scanning assembly configured to output the scanned light over a portion of a target area of an output waveguide. And a brightness of the scanned image light offsets dimming caused by the output waveguide expanding the scanned light in at least one dimension.

A near-eye display (NED) using a pupil expander to expand an eyebox of the NED may suffer from local variations of throughput and color reproduction introduced by the pupil expander of the display. To offset or compensate these variations, the pupil expander, e.g. a pupil-replicating waveguide, may be characterized at a plurality of non-uniformly spaced grid of test points, with the test points disposed more densely at areas of high spatial variation of the throughput or color shift introduced by the pupil expander. The throughput or color shift may be integrated over at least a portion of the field of view of the NED. To determine the areas of high spatial variation, an initial test may be performed at uniformly spaced test grid locations.

The device also includes a first set of one or more lenses configured for directing the first light from the first light source device and the second light from the second light source device toward a first eye of a user. A tunable waveguide display includes a source waveguide, a first tunable lens (FTL), an output waveguide, and a second tunable lens (STL). The source waveguide receives light, expands the light in a first dimension, and outputs the expanded light. The FTL adjusts a wavefront of the expanded light to form adjusted light. The output waveguide receives the adjusted light, expands the adjusted light in a second dimension to form image light, and outputs the image light. The STL adjusts a wavefront of the image light. The FTL and the STL control an image plane of the image light.

A wearable display device and a calibration method for the wearable display device are provided. The wearable display device or its component(s) may exhibit optical throughput dependent on beam angle or beam coordinate at the eyebox. The linear or angular dependencies of throughput may be accounted for when generating an image to be displayed, to lessen or offset these dependencies during operation of the wearable display.

A light field camera capturing one or more light field frames including intensity and angle information of received light. The light field camera includes an array of pixels, a liquid crystal layer overlaying the array of pixels, and a controller. The controller controls, at each time instant, one or more voltages applied to the liquid crystal layer. The controller adjusts, based on the one or more voltages, the liquid crystal layer to control amounts of light at one or more angles transmitted through the liquid crystal layer and captured by the array of pixels as a light field frame. The controller can determine depth information based on the captured one or more light field frames.

A method for monolithically fabricating a light field sensor with an array of microlens. Each microlens is formed directly on a surface including a plurality of pixels of the light field sensor formed on a wafer. The manufacturing system performs a preparation of the surface including the plurality of pixels formed on the wafer. The manufacturing system deposits a layer of photoresist on the surface of the wafer. The manufacturing system performs a patterning on the deposited layer to form one or more blocks of cured photoresists. The manufacturing system performs a thermal curing of the one or more blocks of uncured photoresists to form an array of microlens of the light field sensor. Each microlens covers at least one of the plurality of pixels of the light field sensor formed on the wafer.
