Described are processes to produce base oils with one more improved properties, e.g., lower aromatics, economically and/or efficiently. In some embodiments the processes comprise a step that reduces the amount of residual refractory sulfur compounds prior to or simultaneous with a hydrofinishing step which advantageously provides base oils with lower aromatics than comparable processes.

Method for producing high quality base oils using multiple stage processing

An improved hydroisomerization catalyst and process for making a base oil product using a catalyst comprising SSZ-91 molecular sieve and ZSM-12 molecular sieve. The catalyst and process generally involves the use of a catalyst comprising an SSZ-91 molecular sieve combined with a ZSM-12 molecular sieve to produce dewaxed base oil products by contacting the catalyst with a hydrocarbon feedstock. The catalyst and process provide improved base oil cold properties, such as pour point and cloud point, along with other beneficial base oil properties.

Catalyst and process using SSZ-91 and ZSM-12

An improved hydrotreating catalyst and process for making a base oil product. The catalyst comprises a base extrudate of a high nanopore volume amorphous silica alumina (ASA) and alumina. The catalyst and process use a high nanopore volume ASA/alumina based catalyst to produce hydrotreated dewaxed base oil products from a hydrocarbon feedstock. The base extrudate comprises ASA having a pore volume in the 11-20 nm pore diameter range of 0.2 to 0.9 cc/g and an alumina having a pore volume in the 11-20 nm pore diameter range of 0.01 to 1.0 cc/g. The base extrudate formed has a total pore volume in the 2-50 nm pore diameter range of 0.12 to 1.80 cc/g. The catalyst further comprises at least one modifier element from Groups 6 to 10 and Group 14 of the Periodic Table. The catalyst and process provide improved aromatics saturation.

High nanopore volume hydrotreating catalyst and process

Described herein are processes for hydroisomerising an unconventional feedstock using a hydroisomerisation catalyst comprising zeolite SSZ-91, zeolite SSZ-32, or zeolite SSZ-32x to provide a diesel fuel.

Processes for producing diesel from unconventional feedstocks

Provided is a process for preparing base oil from a waxy hydrocarbon feedstock by contacting the hydrocarbon feedstock in a hydroisomerization zone under hydroisomerization conditions. The reaction is in the presence of hydrogen and an inert gas, with the total pressure in the hydroisomerization zone being at least 400 psig. A product from the hydroisomerization zone is collected and separated into base oil products and fuel products. The inert gas can comprise any suitable inert gas, but is generally nitrogen, methane or argon. Nitrogen is used in one embodiment.

Process having improved base oil yield

A hydroisomerization catalyst comprising a molecular sieve belonging to the ZSM-48 family of zeolites; an inorganic oxide support; one or more first modifiers selected from Groups 8 to 10; and one or more second modifiers selected from the group consisting of calcium (Ca), chromium (Cr), magnesium (Mg), lanthanum (La), barium (Ba), praseodymium (Pr), strontium (Sr), potassium (K) and neodymium (Nd). The molecular sieve comprises: a silicon oxide to aluminum oxide mole ratio of about 40 to about 220; at least about 70% polytype 6 of the total ZSM-48-type material present in the product; and an additional EUO-type molecular sieve phase in an amount of between about 0 and about 7.0 percent by weight of the total product. The molecular sieve has a morphology characterized as polycrystalline aggregates comprising crystallites collectively having an average aspect ratio of between about 1 and about 8.

Hydroisomerization catalysts

A family of new crystalline molecular sieves designated SSZ-91 is disclosed, as are methods for making SSZ-91 and uses for SSZ-91. Molecular sieve SSZ-91 is structurally similar to sieves falling within the ZSM-48 family of molecular sieves, and is characterized as: (1) having a low degree of faulting, (2) a low aspect ratio that inhibits hydrocracking as compared to conventional ZSM-48 materials having an aspect ratio of greater than 8, and (3) is substantially phase pure.

SSZ-91 catalyst

An improved hydrotreating catalyst and process for making a base oil product wherein the catalyst comprises a base extrudate that includes a high nanopore volume amorphous silica alumina (ASA) and a second amorphous silica alumina. The catalyst and process generally involve the use of a base extrudate comprising the high nanopore volume ASA and the second ASA in a catalyst to produce hydrotreated dewaxed base oil products by contacting the catalyst with a hydrocarbon feedstock. The catalyst base extrudate advantageously comprises a first amorphous silica alumina having a pore volume in the 11-20 nm pore diameter range of 0.2 to 1.0 cc/g and a second amorphous silica alumina having a pore volume in the 11-20 nm pore diameter range of 0.02 to 0.2 cc/g, with the base extrudate formed from the amorphous silica alumina and the alumina having a total pore volume in the 2-50 nm pore diameter range of 0.12 to 1.80 cc/g. The catalyst further comprises at least one modifier element from Groups 6 to 10 and Group 14 of the Periodic Table. The catalyst and process provide improved aromatics saturation.

Base oil hydrotreating catalyst and process of use

Provided in one embodiment is an improved and more flexible process for preparing a finished base oil or a white oil product comprising passing a dewaxed base oil product to a distillation column and separating the dewaxed base oil product into fuel and base oil product streams. The base oil product streams are tested to determine if they meet desired specifications. Base oil product streams that meet the desired minimum base oil specifications are passed to a hydrofinishing reactor to prepare a white oil product, or passed to direct sale.

Process to make finished base oils and white oils from dewaxed bulk base oils

A process for preparing a base oil from a waxy hydrocarbon feedstock is provided. The process comprises passing the hydrocarbon feedstock to a distillation column prior to dewaxing in order to recover a heavy wax cut. The heavy wax is then hydrocracked to lower boiling compounds which can be better isomerized to a base oil with an acceptable cloud point. The base oil yield is also increased.

Process providing improved base oil yield

A method for making a hydroisomerization catalyst having improved thermal stability and metal dispersion characteristics, the catalyst prepared therefrom, and a process for making a base oil product using the catalyst are disclosed. The catalyst is prepared from a composition comprising an SSZ-91 molecular sieve and a rare earth modified alumina, with the composition being modified to contain a Group 8-10 metal, typically through impregnation of a Group 8-10 metal composition. The catalyst may be used to produce dewaxed base oil products by contacting the catalyst under hydroisomerization conditions with a hydrocarbon feedstock.

Molecular sieve SSZ-91, methods for preparing SSZ-91, and uses for SSZ-91

A hydrocracking catalyst comprising a zeolite beta having an average domain size from 800 to 1500 nm; a zeolite USY; a catalyst support; and at least one metal selected from the group consisting of elements from Group 6 and Groups 8 through 10 of the Periodic Table. The zeolite beta has an OD acidity of 20 to 50 &#x3bc;mol/g and the catalyst support comprises an amorphous silica aluminate and a second support material when the weight percentage content of the zeolite beta is less than the weight percentage of the zeolite USY, and, when the weight percentage content of the zeolite beta is greater than the weight percentage of the zeolite USY, the zeolite beta has an OD acidity of 20 to 400 &#x3bc;mol/g, the zeolite beta content is from 0.5 to 10 wt. % and the zeolite USY has an ASDI between 0.05 and 0.12 with a corresponding zeolite USY content of from 0 to 5 wt. %. A process for hydrocracking a hydrocarbonaceous feedstock using the catalyst is also described as is a method for making the hydrocracking catalyst.

Hydrocracking catalyst containing zeolite USY and low acidity and large domain size zeolite beta

A new crystalline molecular sieve designated SSZ-95 is disclosed. In general, SSZ-95 is synthesized from a reaction mixture suitable for synthesizing MTT-type molecular sieves and maintaining the mixture under crystallization conditions sufficient to form product. The product molecular sieve is subjected to a pre-calcination step, and ion-exchange to remove extra-framework cations, and a post-calcination step. The molecular sieve has a MTT-type framework and a H-D exchangeable acid site density of 0 to 50% relative to molecular sieve SSZ-32.
