The present invention relates to isolated nucleic acid molecules encoding an autoinducer inactivation protein, wherein the encoded protein comprises an amino acid sequence selected from the group consisting ofHXHXDH&#x2dc;60aa&#x2dc;H&#x2dc;21aa&#x2dc;DandHXHXDH&#x2dc;72aa&#x2dc;H&#x2dc;21aa&#x2dc;D, and to expression vectors and transformed plant and animal cells comprising the same. The proteins encoded by these nucleic acid molecules provide to a susceptible plant or animal increased resistance to a disease the virulence of which is regulated by autoinducers. Also provided are methods of increasing disease resistance in susceptible plants and animals.

The present invention relates to isolated nucleic acid molecules encoding a bacterial autoinactivation protein and methods for increasing disease resistance and preventing or reducing bacterial damage in plants and animals. The nucleic acid that encodes the bacterial autoinducer inactivation protein can be introduced into a cell so that the bacterial autoinducer inactivation protein is expressed by the plant or animal. The nucleic acid may confer resistance to disease where the expression of pathogenic genes are regulated by autoinducers.
