The present invention relates to a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of polymeric composite microspheres comprising an aqueous dispersion of polymeric composite microspheres that comprise a polysiloxane and a polymer, as defined herein, and a suspension polymerization process for making the composition. The composition is useful for making defect free coatings with a relatively low coefficient of friction.

The present invention relates to a paint composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of a) polymer particles having an average particle size in the range of from 80 nm to 500 nm; b) polymeric organic crosslinked microspheres having a particle size in the range of from 1 μm to 20 μm; c) polysiloxane particles having a particle size in the range of from 1 μm to 30 μm; d) a rheology modifier; e) an opacifying white pigment having a refractive index of >1.9; and f) less than 10 weight percent of a low Tpolyurethane. The composition of the present invention gives coatings with excellent burnish resistance.

A dispersion contains: (a) a polyorganosiloxane with at least 90 mole % dimethyl D units and viscosity of one kPa*s or more dispersed as 0.5-20 micrometer particles; (b) a condensation product of: (i) a polysiloxane resin (Mw of 4,000-50,000) with composition: (RSiO)(SiO)(ZO)where a is 0.30-0.60, b is 0.40-0.70, c is 0.05-0.20, a+b is one, R is selected from hydrogen, Calkyl groups and aryl groups, and Z is selected from H, and Calkyls; and (ii) a polyoxyalkylene polymer (Mn of 4,500-50,000) with composition: A&#x2014;O&#x2014;(CHO)(CHO)&#x2014;A' where e/p is 1-9, A and A&#x2032; are selected from hydrogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl, aryl, and substituted aryl groups and at least one of A and A&#x2032; is H; (c) non-aqueous fluid carrier miscible with (a); and (d) monoterpene; the weight-ratio of (c) to (b) is 0.5-1; weight-ratio of (b) and (c) to (a) is 0.01-0.50; and the composition contains below one ppm aromatic solvent.

Silicone emulsions

A hydrolysis resistant aqueous emulsion includes a hydrolyzable silicon containing compound. This emulsion is formed by a method that includes the step of (A) forming a seed emulsion that includes (1) an emulsifier, (2) water, and (3) a first oil phase. The method also includes the step of (B) adding a second oil phase, including a hydrolyzable silicon containing compound, to the seed emulsion. A weight ratio of the second oil phase including the hydrolyzable silicon containing compound to the first oil phase in the seed emulsion is from 0.5 to 50. Moreover, a total weight of the first and second oil phases in the emulsion is at least 60 weight percent.

The invention provides a water repellent composition for treating porous substrates comprising an emulsion which includes water, at least one surfactant, and a siloxane copolymer having the formula (I) wherein R is an alkyl radical having 1 to 3 carbon atoms; a has a value of from 1 to 12; R' is an alkyl radical having 8 to 12 carbon atoms, b&#x2267;2; (a+b) is at least 5. This composition shows a good depth of penetration of porous substrates especially reinforced concrete and has a low Volatile Organic Content to ASTM D 5095. 

Water repellent for concrete

A mechanical method of making an oil-in-water microemulsion containing (A) a polysiloxane and (B) an inert fluid selected from an inert siloxane fluid and an inert organic fluid, where the average emulsion particle size is between 1 and 140 nanometers, is disclosed. The process involves the following steps: i) preparing an oil phase comprising a polysiloxane containing mixture by the polymerization of silane or siloxane containing monomers and/or oligomers in the presence of an inert fluid, a suitable catalyst and optionally an end-blocking agent; and ii) where required quenching the polymerization process; wherein the inert fluid is substantially retained within the resulting polysiloxane containing mixture; iii) if required, mixing one or more surfactants into the oil phase; iv) adding water to the oil phase, followed by applying agitation or shear to the mixture to arrive at an oil-in-water microemulsion; v) optionally diluting the oil-in-water microemulsion by adding more water.

Preparation of silicone microemulsions

Silicone polyether microemulsions are disclosed containing i) at least 20% by weight of a water immiscible dispersed phase comprising certain polydialkylsiloxane-polyoxyalkylene copolymers having 0.1 to 10 wt % ethylene oxide (CHO) groups, optionally a water immiscible silicone or hydrocarbon fluid, and ii) at least 5% by weight of an emulsifier. The silicone polyether microemulsions are optically transparent and have an average particle size of less than 100 nanometers. They may be used in a variety of personal care product formulations. In particular, the silicone polyether microemulsions may be used to prepare 'clear' personal care products.

A process for preparing an aqueous dispersion of a silicone resin is disclosed by reacting a mixture containing an alkylalkoxysilane and a cationic alkoxysilane to form a self dispersing silicone resin and subsequently combining the silicone resin with water to form the dispersion. The resulting dispersions are useful for forming coatings on various substrates that are essentially free of co-surfactants or volatile organic solvents.
