Adaptive software-defined storage for cloud storage workloads

A video-on-demand (VOD) server in an Internet protocol television (IPTV) network with a network of set-top boxes includes IPTV operational data and an analysis module that selects a content item. The VOD server divides the content item into sequential chunks, divides the chunks into stripes, pre-populates set-top boxes in a peering network with at least one stripe from each chunk, receives a request for the content item, and directs each set-top box to sequentially stream its stripes. A method includes selecting a content item based upon IPTV operational data, dividing the content item into sequential chunks, dividing the chunks into stripes, pre-populating set-top boxes in a peering network with at least one stripe from each chunk, receiving a request for the content item, and directing each set-top box to sequentially stream its stripes.

Analyzing internet protocol television data to support peer-assisted video-on-demand content delivery

Encoding a file into a plurality of chunks, wherein a subset of the plurality of chunks may be used to create a functional equivalent of the file. At least one additional chunk is created from the plurality of chunks. The at least one additional chunk is directed to be stored in a cache memory and the plurality of chunks are directed to be stored on at least one storage node. Upon demand for the file, at least one additional chunk is cased to be retrieved from the cache and at least a portion of the plurality of chunks are caused to be retrieved from the at least one storage node and the functional equivalent of the file is constructed through utilization of the at least one additional chunk and the portion of the plurality of chunks.

Distributed computing task costing is disclosed. Costing can be employed to determine if a task will be passed to a distributed computing cluster including mobile devices. Costing can include determining a base cost value predicated on a selectable level of utility to a user of a burdened device, a base time value related to completing the task without the use of the cluster, determining a delay cost, and any monetary costs associated with performing the task without the use of the cluster. Costing can further include demining a relief cost that can include the selectable level of utility, a relief time value related to completing the task with the cluster, the delay cost, an incentive cost based on the sum across a set of relief devices and their corresponding parameters for cluster participation, and any remaining monetary costs borne by the burdened device. Where the base cost value and relief cost value satisfies conditions, a task can be divided into subtasks that can be distributed to the cluster to accomplish the task in a distributed computing environment.

Distributed computing task costing with a mobile device

A plurality of portions of a video content item is distributed to a plurality of peers, respectively, of a peer-to-peer network. Each of the plurality of portions encodes less than an entire portion of the video content item. A peer of the network retrieves at least a subset of the plurality of portions of the video content item from at least a subset of the peers. The at least the subset of the plurality of portions of the video content item enables recovery of the video content item by the peer.

Methods, systems and apparatus are disclosed to facilitate ranked network priority. An example method includes calculating a rank of a first wireless device relative to a plurality of wireless devices based on a first bid value associated with the first wireless device, allocating a first bit rate to the first wireless device based on the rank of the first wireless device at a first time, and in response to detecting a change in availability of the first bit rate at a second time, applying a second bid value for a second bit rate when the first wireless device is located in a first geographic area, and applying a third bid value for the second bit rate when the first wireless device is located in a second geographic area different from the first geographic area.

The system and method include a content acquisition platform receiving media content from at least one source and storing the media content in a media storage platform, a media processing platform segmenting the media content based upon predetermined criteria defined by a user and storing metadata corresponding to the segmented media content in the media storage platform, an alert platform providing the user with an alert identifying the segmented media content, the alert including at least a portion of the metadata stored in the media storage platform and a content delivery platform sending the segmented media content to a device of the user.
