Methods for making a B-stage thiol-cured urethane acrylate elastomeric film are provided. At least a urethane acrylate oligomer, a multifunctional thiol, and a base catalyst are combined to form a thiol terminated B-stage elastomer. The thiol terminated B-stage elastomer is exposed to an ultraviolet photoinitiator in the presence of an allyl ether terminated urethane to form the B-stage thiol-cured urethane acrylate elastomeric film. In some embodiments the B-stage thiol-cured urethane acrylate elastomeric film is used for a soft actuator application such as a fluidic elastomer actuator application or an electrostatic zipping actuator application.

The gate transmission element may be configured to move within the cavity to inhibit a subject fluid flow from an inlet port to an outlet port of the fluid channel upon pressurization of the input gate terminal, and to allow subject fluid flow from the inlet port to the outlet port upon depressurization of the input gate terminal. The disclosed lockable beams for haptics applications may include a rib structure including a plurality of ribs, a linking structure connecting the ribs to each other, a tendon extending along the rib structure, a tensioner coupled to the tendon for applying tension to the tendon, and a locking mechanism configured to, when engaged, impede relative movement between the tendon and the rib structure in a manner that impedes bending of the lockable beam. Disclosed devices may include a membrane, a first electrode supported by the membrane, a second electrode, a capacitance sensor configured to determine a capacitance measurement between the first electrode and the second electrode, and a controller configured to control an electrical potential applied between the electrode and the second electrode. The controller may be configured to modify the electrical potential based on the capacitance measurement. Example devices may include one or more flexible membranes that may, at least in part, define an enclosure that is at least partially filled with a dielectric fluid. A method and system for assembling a device by picking up semiconductor devices from a carrier substrate and placing the semiconductor devices onto a target substrate. The transfer of the semiconductor devices uses fluid as a transfer medium. The fluid enters a fluid channel of a pickup head, causing the pickup head to expand, make contact with, and attach to an aligned semiconductor device. After the semiconductor device is aligned with and placed onto the target substrate, at least a portion of the fluid is removed from the pickup head to release the semiconductor device onto the target substrate. The semiconductor device bonds to the target substrate.

Methods and systems for actuating electroactive materials

An actuation apparatus may be configured to apply forces to a user's skin using flexible-membrane actuators. Such an apparatus may include (i) an array of actuator chambers that include a flexible material layer enclosing a changeable volume of fluid, (ii) a contact surface that is coupled to each actuator chamber, and (iii) a support framework that is coupled to the actuator chambers such that the array of actuator chambers is disposed between the support framework and the contact surface, and such that distortion of actuator chambers caused by changing the volume of fluid within the actuator chambers causes the array of actuator chambers to exert forces on the contact surface and cause movement of the contact surface.

In various embodiments, an electrode precursor material may be flowed into a manifold extrusion die having first and second manifold inlet openings. In some embodiments, an electroactive device includes a first electrode, a second electrode, and an electroactive element disposed between the first electrode and the second electrode. The electroactive element may include a plurality of voids distributed within the electroactive element. The electroactive device may have a non-uniform electroactive response based at least in part on a non-uniform distribution of voids within the electroactive element. The non-uniform electroactive response may include a non-uniform sensor response or a non-uniform actuation response. Various other methods, systems, apparatuses, and materials are also disclosed.

Systems and methods using patterned nanovoids for actuation and deformation sensing

A device may include a primary electrode, a secondary electrode overlapping at least a portion of the primary electrode, and an electroactive polymer element disposed between and abutting the primary electrode and the secondary electrode. The electroactive polymer element may include a nanovoided polymer material whereby resistance to deformation of the electroactive polymer element is non-linear with respect to an amount of deformation of the electroactive polymer element.
