An optical fiber heat exchanger includes an outer body and an inner body inserted into the outer body. The inner body includes a plurality of guide walls to guide a cooling liquid through the optical fiber heat exchanger to exchange heat from an optical fiber inserted in the optical fiber heat exchanger, a first set of parallel straight channels, extending along an inlet portion of the inner body, formed by a first subset of the plurality of guide walls, a set of U-shaped channels, extending through a transition section of the inner body, formed by a second subset of the plurality of guide walls, and a second set of parallel straight channels, extending along an outlet portion of the inner body, formed by a third subset of the plurality of guide walls.

An optical device may comprise an optical element holder that holds an optical element in an internal portion of the optical element holder, wherein the optical element holder includes a protruding feature with a contact portion that holds the optical element in the internal portion of the optical element holder. The optical device may additionally comprise the optical element, wherein an edge of the optical element includes a chamfered portion that contacts the contact portion of the protruding feature of the optical element holder to allow the protruding feature of the optical element holder to hold the optical element in the internal portion of the optical element holder.

A flexible printed circuit (FPC) may have reduced-tolerance electrical connection pads that comprise a connection portion and an adjacent window portion, where the position of a component that is mechanically and electrically connected to the FPC is limited by the geometry of the connection portion of the respective connection pads. The window portion includes an area void of conductive material and bounded by the connection portion on one side and may be bounded by peripheral portions on the other sides, where the peripheral portions are significantly narrower than the connection portion. A portion of the peripheral portions extending from the connection portion may be tucked under a portion of the FPC cover layer to prevent peeling of the peripheral portions.

An interleaved conductor structure for electrically connecting the read/write electronics to a read/write head in a hard disk drive is provided. The interleaved conductor structure may allow for an increased characteristic-impedance range, greater interference shielding and a reduction of signal loss that is contributed by a lossy conductive substrate. The electrical traces may have different widths, be offset, or even wrap around each other at the via connections.

Swaging a suspension base plate to an actuator arm for a hard disk drive. A portion of material adjacent to a hole in the actuator arm is removed to create an opening to receive material. A flange of the suspension base plate is inserted into the hole in the actuator arm. The suspension base plate is swaged to the actuator arm, wherein the swaging causes material from the suspension base plate to flow into the opening.

A method of assembling a head stack assembly (HSA) includes securing a flex cable to an actuator including an actuator arm having a side slot with a slot end. A first head gimbal assembly (HGA) is attached to the actuator arm. The first HGA includes a first laminated flexure having a first flexure tail with a first raised region that includes an out-of-plane bend. The first raised region is squeezed while inserting the first flexure tail partially within the side slot with the first raised region adjacent the slot end. The first raised region is allowed to expand into contact with the side slot adjacent the slot end. The first flexure tail is electrically connected to the flex cable.

Disclosed herein are embodiments directed to a head gimbal assembly including a novel suspension assembly that includes a flexure tail with a first plurality of apertures in its structural layer. Each of the first plurality of apertures underlies a first trace but not a second trace. Each of a second plurality of apertures in the structural layer underlies a second trace but not the first trace. Each of the first plurality of apertures includes a corresponding region of maximum width, and each of the second plurality of apertures includes a corresponding region of maximum width, as measured in the width direction. None of the corresponding regions of maximum width of the first plurality of apertures is disposed in an overlapping position along the long axis as any of the corresponding regions of maximum width of the second plurality of apertures.

A novel suspension assembly includes a flexure tail with a first plurality of apertures in its structural layer. Each of the first plurality of apertures underlies a first trace but not a second trace. Each of a second plurality of apertures in the structural layer underlies a second trace but not the first trace. Each of the first plurality of apertures includes a corresponding region of maximum width, and each of the second plurality of apertures includes a corresponding region of maximum width, as measured in the width direction. None of the corresponding regions of maximum width of the first plurality of apertures is disposed in an overlapping position along the long axis as any of the corresponding regions of maximum width of the second plurality of apertures.

A novel head stack assembly (HSA), and method for HSA assembly, are disclosed and claimed. A first flexure tail has a long axis approximately parallel to a side of the actuator arm. The actuator arm includes a slot in the side having a slot end. The first flexure tail is disposed partially within the slot. The first flexure tail includes a first raised region in contact with the slot adjacent the slot end. The first raised region includes an out-of-plane bend with cross-sectional curvature along the long axis. The first raised region may be squeezed while inserting the first flexure tail partially within the side slot, with the first raised region adjacent the slot end, and then allowed to expand into contact with the slot adjacent the slot end.

A disk drive suspension assembly includes a load beam, a first hinge arm, a second hinge arm, a base plate, and a flexure that includes a head mounting surface. The base plate has a first base plate layer that includes a first base plate side and an opposing second base plate side. The first base plate side has a main base plate surface and a recessed base plate surface parallel to and offset from the main base plate surface. A first hinge arm is attached to the main base plate surface. A second hinge arm is attached to the recessed base plate surface. The first and second hinge arms are attached to the load beam. The base plate has a first thickness at the main base plate surface and a second thickness at the recessed base plate surface that is the same as the first thickness.

A flexure for supporting a head in a disk drive includes a tongue including a head mounting surface for attaching the head. The flexure further includes a first arm on a first side of the tongue. The first arm includes a structural material and has a first cross-sectional area in a plane perpendicular to the head mounting surface. The first cross-sectional area has a first centroid. The flexure further includes a second arm on the first side of the tongue. The second arm includes a conductive material layer. The second arm has a second cross-sectional area in the plane perpendicular to the head mounting surface. The second cross-sectional area has a second centroid. The second centroid is not offset from the first centroid by more than 10 microns in a direction perpendicular to the head mounting surface.

A flexure is provided for a HGA suspension. The flexure includes a metal base layer, a trace layer, and a dielectric layer disposed between the trace and base layers. The metal base layer includes a heat sink portion. The trace layer includes a plurality of conductive traces, each conductive trace having a curved section that terminates in a trace termination pad. The dielectric layer includes a portion that underlies the trace termination pads and overlies the heat sink portion. The base layer and the dielectric layer each also include a window. The curved section of each conductive trace extends over the window of the base layer. The curved section of each conductive trace may at least partially extend over the window of the dielectric layer.

A head suspension for a head/gimbal assembly comprises a flexure attached to a load beam. The load beam includes a lifter tab configured to engage a lifting surface of a load/unload ramp. The flexure includes a limiter tab, extending from a trailing edge thereof, that is configured to engage with a gimbal-limiting surface of the load/unload ramp. The limiter tab comprises a metallic base layer, a metallic stiffening layer, and a non-metallic intermediate layer disposed between the base and stiffening layers. The stiffening layer can include both conductive traces that terminate with a set of bonding pads and an appendage that extends along a length of the limiter tab. The appendage portion of the stiffening layer serves to increase the thickness of the limiter tab to increase the stiffness of the limiter tab.
