A method of obtaining position of a downhole tool with respect to a wellbore includes logging well data via the tool over a period of time and measuring a lateral acceleration of the tool over the period of time with one or more accelerometers embedded in the tool. The method further includes performing double integration on an acceleration of the tool over a period of time. The method also includes obtaining a displacement of the tool over the period of time from the double integration. The method also includes fitting the displacement of the tool over the period of time to a best fit curve. The method also includes subtracting the best fit curve from the displacement of the tool over the period of time.

Systems and methods for detecting downhole tool location inside a borehole

Methods, systems, and computer program products for characterizing materials in a wellbore having multiple casing strings uses well completion data and instantaneous frequency, instantaneous phase, and/or amplitude attributes, including waveform amplitude or instantaneous amplitude, of an acoustic waveform to determine material densities, acoustic velocities and acoustic travel distances for the materials between the various stages of casings.

Characterization of wellbore materials in multiple casing strings

Systems, methods, and software for determining a thickness of a well casing are described. In some aspects, the thickness of the well casing is determined based on results of comparing a measured waveform and model waveforms. The measured waveform and model waveforms are generated based on operating an acoustic transmitter and an acoustic receiver within a wellbore comprising the well casing.

Determining borehole parameters using ultrasonic and micro-resistivity calipers

A method for operation of an acoustic tool, having a plurality of acoustic sensors, may include receiving acoustic waves from an acoustic source located at a depth in a borehole. A selected location (e.g., central location) of the acoustic sensor array may be positioned substantially at the depth of the acoustic source based on a symmetricity of an upper and lower section of a frequency-wavenumber (f-k) transform pattern with respect to a selected wavenumber. A radial distance from the acoustic source to the acoustic tool may be determined based on a theoretical f-k transform pattern used as a mask to filter measured data in the f-k domain.

Downhole acoustic source localization

In accordance with embodiments of the present disclosure, systems and methods for taking acoustic/ultrasonic wave measurements of a wellbore using a downhole tool equipped with microelectromechanical (MEM) transducers are provided. The MEM transducers may include a plurality of MEM transmitters (e.g., MEM speakers) and a plurality of separate MEM receivers (e.g., MEM microphones). These MEM transducers may be disposed in arrays proximate an outer surface of the downhole tool to collect acoustic/ultrasonic wave measurements of the full circumference of a wellbore. Due to their small size, large numbers of MEM transducers may be distributed radially around the downhole tool. Such an arrangement of sensors may enable the downhole tool to perform measurements of the entire wellbore without the downhole tool needing to be rotated, leading to an increased signal-to-noise ratio of the measurements.

MEMS-based transducers on a downhole tool

Method and system of estimating a shape of a borehole include receiving data points associated with a standoff measurement for the borehole, wherein each data point includes a radial distance value and an azimuthal value corresponding to the radial distance value. The method and system determine point-to-point angles for the data points based on at least the azimuthal value associated with each data point, wherein each point-to-point angle spans between two adjacent data points. The method and system select a geometric shape from a plurality of geometric shapes to fit to the data points based on the point-to-point angles, the plurality of geometric shapes including a circle and an ellipse. A shape of the borehole is estimated at a location of the standoff measurement based on the selected geometric shape.

Borehole shape estimation

Systems, methods, and software for determining impedance of a casing-cement bond are described. In some aspects, the bond impedance is determined based on results of comparing a measured waveform and a model waveform. The model waveform corresponds to an estimated impedance of the bond and corresponds to a ray tracing of an acoustic signal that accounts for a radiation pattern of the acoustic transmitter and a curvature of the well casing. The measured waveform and the model waveform are generated based on operating an acoustic transmitter and an acoustic receiver within a wellbore comprising the well casing.

Cross-dipole measurements are obtained in a borehole. By estimating a direction of polarization of the fast shear mode at low and high frequencies and comparing the estimated distances, a cause of anisotropy is established. Formation stresses and directions may be estimated.

Identification of stress in formations using angles of fast and slow dipole waves in borehole acoustic logging

The method disclosed is useful for estimating anisotropic properties of an earth formation. The method includes extracting travel time values of components of the acoustic wave induced from a downhole tool and reflected from a boundary bed formation. The method further includes obtaining a travel time ratio of the wave components and using the travel time ratio to estimate the anisotropic properties of the formation.

Method for determining seismic anisotropy

Dispersive array acoustic data are acquired. A histogram is determined from the semblance-frequency coherence of the data. The low frequency limit of the data is estimated by matching the statistics of the histogram to the statistics of a modeling function.

Using statistics of a fitting function for data-driven dispersion slowness processing

A phased array of transducers is used to generate elastic waves into the earth formation in a selected direction. The impedance measured at the input to the transducer array is indicative of the elastic impedance of the earth formation in the selected direction.

P-wave anisotropy determination using borehole measurements

A method and apparatus for enhancing the moveout between a direct wave and a reflected wave. The method involves transmitting imaging signals into a body to be imaged and receiving the resulting signals propagated from the signal source. The step of receiving the propagated signals includes selectively adjusting the distance between the signal source and the signal receivers between successive signals. The method further comprises separating the reflected signals from the total received signals and enhanced stacking of the measured reflected signals.
