A composition which is densifiable at low temperatures in an air atmosphere suitable for use as an interconnect layer in a solid oxide fuel cell. Binary alloying of SrO and CaO with LaCrO,is used to form a compound having the general formula La,(Sr,Ca),CrO,which is a stabilized form of LaCrO,and has the desirable properties for a fuel cell interconnect layer.

Consinterable ceramic interconnect for solid oxide fuel cells

A water-borne epoxy resin coating composition comprised of: (a) particles of an epoxy resin having a neutral or positive surface charge dispersed in (b) water, an amount of (c) surfactant sufficient to disperse the epoxy resin in the water, the surfactant being a nonionic surfactant, amphoteric surfactant or mixture thereof and (d) a latent curing agent, may be applied to a metal substrate absent a primer coating and, subsequently, heated to form a cured coating on the substrate. The latent curing agent is (i) at least partially dissolved in the water, (ii) essentially insoluble with the epoxy resin and (iii) present in a sufficient amount to cure the epoxy resin. An example of a suitable latent curing agent is dicyandiamide. The cured coating displays excellent adherence, wear resistance and resistance to solvents such as acetone, a 1N HCl solution and a 1N KOH solution.

Water-borne epoxy resin coating composition

A fuel cell stack made from two different ceramic materials which are used to form four distinct layers of each individual fuel cell is provided. The fuel cell stack uses a ceramic ionic conductor to form the electrolyte layer and a ceramic electronic conductor to form an interconnect layer, with the anode and cathode formed from the combination of the electronic and ionic conductor materials. The internally balanced or mirror symmetric configuration eliminates the warpage or camber problems encountered in conventional multilayer cosintering systems, and the use of common materials in adjacent layers enhances bonding across the adjoining interfaces.

Solid oxide fuel cells

A multilayer fuel cell stack comprised of a plurality of fuel cell units each having an electrolyte layer interposed between an anode layer and a cathode layer, a pair of buffer layers, and an interconnect layer. The buffer layers are interposed between each of the electrodes (anode layer and cathode layer) and the interconnect layer to improve the electrical conductivity and mechanical bonding characteristics between layers. The buffer layers have the additional effect of physically separating the layers and preventing interdiffusion among chemically incompatible components during cosintering. The materials are selected for the layers such that the fuel cell units in the fuel cell stack are cosinterable at relatively low temperatures.

A sintered body is formed by mixing an aluminum nitride powder with an oxide of Dy, Pr, Nd, Sm, or mixture thereof, and, optionally, an oxide of Eu, Ce, or mixture thereof, to form an admixture and heating the admixture in a non-oxidizing non-reducing atmosphere to a temperature for a time sufficient to densify the admixture to greater than 90% of theoretical, wherein the sintered body contains about 1.4 to about 4.0 mole percent of the rare earth element according to the equation, ##EQU1## where M is the rare earth element, O is oxygen and MO.sub.1.5 is a rare earth oxide in which the rare earth element has a valence of .sup.+ 3 with the proviso that the amount of Ce, Eu, or mixture thereof, is at most about 55% by moles of the rare earth present in the body as expressed by MO.sub.1.5.
