A display may include an array of pixels covered by lenticular lenses. The lenticular lenses may cause expansion of light primarily in a horizontal direction. To improve the perceived resolution of the display, the horizontal resolution of the pixels on the display may be increased. In one possible layout, each pixel includes one red sub-pixel, one blue sub-pixel, and one green sub-pixel. The sub-pixels may be non-square rectangular. The sub-pixels may be the same size or may have the same widths and different heights. Each pixel may be asymmetric about a horizontal axis. In a given row, the pixels may alternate between first and second layouts. The second layout may be a vertically flipped version of the first layout.

Pixel arrangements for displays with lenticular lenses

An electronic device may include a lenticular display. The lenticular display may have a lenticular lens film formed over an array of pixels. The lenticular lenses may be configured to enable stereoscopic viewing of the display such that a viewer perceives three-dimensional images. The display may have a number of independently controllable viewing zones. A eye and/or head tracking system may use a camera to capture images of a viewer of the display. Control circuitry in the electronic device may use the captured images from the eye and/or head tracking system to determine which viewing zones are occupied by the viewer's eyes. The control circuitry may disable or dim viewing zones that are not occupied by the viewer's eyes in order to conserve power. An unoccupied viewing zone and an adjacent, occupied viewing zone may display the same image to increase sharpness in the display.

Displays with viewer tracking

A lenticular display may be formed with convex curvature. The lenticular display may have a lenticular lens film with lenticular lenses that extend across the length of the display. The lenticular lenses may be configured to enable stereoscopic viewing of the display. To enable more curvature in the display while ensuring satisfactory stereoscopic display performance, the display may have stereoscopic zones and non-stereoscopic zones. A central stereoscopic zone may be interposed between first and second non-stereoscopic zones. The non-stereoscopic zones may have more curvature than the stereoscopic zone. To prevent crosstalk within the lenticular display, a louver film may be incorporated into the display. The pixel array may have a diagonal layout and may be covered by vertically oriented lenticular lenses.

Pixel arrangements for electronic device displays

An electronic device may include a lenticular display. The lenticular display may have a lenticular lens film formed over an array of pixels. A plurality of lenticular lenses may extend across the length of the display. The lenticular lenses may be configured to enable stereoscopic viewing of the display such that a viewer perceives three-dimensional images. Crosstalk between viewing zones and disparity between images received from different viewing zones may result in disparity-caused shifts in images perceived by viewer of the lenticular display. To mitigate these disparity-caused shifts, compensation circuitry may be included in the display pipeline circuitry. The compensation circuitry may include stored disparity-caused shift calibration information that is used for the compensation. The stored disparity-caused shift calibration information may be a polynomial function that outputs a magnitude of disparity-caused shift for a given pixel location.

An electronic device may include a lenticular display. The lenticular display may have a lenticular lens film formed over an array of pixels. The lenticular lenses may be configured to enable stereoscopic viewing of the display such that a viewer perceives three-dimensional images. To mitigate jaggedness in a curved edge of the active area, control circuitry may modify input pixel data for the display using dimming factors. Each brightness value of the pixel data may be multiplied by a corresponding dimming factor such that the curved edge has a smooth appearance. Each physical pixel in the display may have an associated perceived pixel that is based on an appearance of that physical pixel through the lenticular lens film. The perceived pixel may have a different footprint than its corresponding physical pixel. The dimming factors for boundary smoothing in the curved edges may be based on the perceived pixels.

Boundary smoothing in a display

A privacy film may have a light-blocking layer that is interposed between first and second transparent substrates. The light-blocking layer may have a plurality of opaque portions and a plurality of transparent portions. The opaque portions may be shaped to ensure light from the display is directed only to the primary viewer of the display. Each opaque portion of the light-blocking layer may extend along a respective longitudinal axis between the first and second transparent substrates. Privacy films used to cover curved displays may have opaque portions that extend along longitudinal axes that have different angles relative to the transparent substrates. Opaque portions in the edge of the privacy film may have longitudinal axes that are at non-perpendicular angles with respect to the transparent substrates. A privacy film for a curved display may also include a light-redirecting layer such as a prism layer or a liquid crystal layer.

A lenticular display may be formed with convex curvature. The lenticular display may have a lenticular lens film with lenticular lenses that extend across the length of the display. The lenticular lenses may be configured to enable stereoscopic viewing of the display. To enable more curvature in the display while ensuring satisfactory stereoscopic display performance, the display may have stereoscopic zones and non-stereoscopic zones. A central stereoscopic zone may be interposed between first and second non-stereoscopic zones. The non-stereoscopic zones may have more curvature than the stereoscopic zone. To prevent crosstalk within the lenticular display, a louver film may be incorporated into the display. The louver film may have a plurality of transparent portions separated by opaque walls. The opaque walls may control the emission angle of light from the display, reducing crosstalk. The louver film may be interposed between the lenticular lens film and the display panel.

Optical film arrangements for electronic device displays

Systems and methods are provided to compensate image data for display on a curved display. A pixel uniformity compensation factor may be applied based on a pixel uniformity compensation factor map that is calibrated to the display panel while the display panel has a flat shape, and a panel curvature compensation factor may be applied when the image content is to be displayed while the display panel has a curved shape. The panel curvature compensation factor may be based on a panel curvature compensation factor map that is calibrated to the display panel after the display panel is bent from the flat shape to the curved shape.

Curved display panel color and brightness calibration systems and methods

To enable a display to display different content to different viewers, a display may include a time-sequential directional backlight unit. The backlight unit may emit light in different directions in different configurations. In a first state, the backlight unit emits light at maximum brightness in a first direction. In a second state, the backlight unit emits light at maximum brightness in a second direction that is different than the first direction. The backlight unit may repeatedly and rapidly switch between the different states. The first direction may be towards a first viewer whereas the second direction may be towards a second, different viewer. Therefore, each viewer receives backlight in one of the configurations and does not receive backlight in the other configuration. In synchronization with the backlight unit, the liquid crystal display panel may repeatedly switch between displaying content for the first viewer and displaying content for the second viewer.

Display with a time-sequential directional backlight

Systems and methods to compensate for color fringe visual artifacts due at least in part to subpixel locations on an electronic display are provided. An electronic device may include subpixel layout compensation circuitry (SLCC) and an electronic display. The SLCC may receive first image data and an indication of spatial positions of subpixels that make up pixels of an electronic display. The SLCC may generate second image data based at least in part on the first image data and the indication of the spatial positions of the subpixels. The second image data may reduce or eliminate a color fringe artifact that would otherwise occur without compensation.
