Replicate arrays of liquid solutions can be reacted to form product solid inorganic material arrays for analysis and selection of optimum processes and products with desirable properties.

Disclosed herein are 'smart' phosphor compositions capable of regulating the chromaticity of their emission to substantially constant values even with variations in the excitation radiation they receive to induce photoluminescence. One phosphor of the smart composition demonstrates an increase in emission intensity increases as the wavelength of the excitation radiation is increased. The other phosphor shows a decrease in emission intensity with increasing excitation wavelength. Constant chromaticity in this context is defined as a change in CIE x or y coordinate of less than about five percent over a 10 nm range of excitation wavelengths.

Light emitting device utilizing remote wavelength conversion with improved color characteristics

A photoluminescence color display comprises a display panel that displays red, green and blue pixel areas, an excitation source operable to generate excitation radiation for operating the display, and a photoluminescence color-element plate. The color-element plate comprises at least one photoluminescence material, such as a phosphor material or quantum dots, that is operable to emit light corresponding to red, green and blue pixel areas of the display in response to said excitation radiation. Additionally, the photo-luminescence color display comprises a wavelength selective filter that is provided between the color-element plate and the excitation source. The filter has a transmission characteristic that allows the passage of excitation radiation from the excitation source to excite the at least one photoluminescence material whilst preventing the passage of photoluminescence light back to the excitation source thereby prevent cross contamination of light among the different pixel areas of the display.

A method of fabricating a light emitting device comprises: mounting a light emitting diode chip in a package; heating the light emitting diode chip package assembly to a pre-selected temperature; and dispensing a pre-selected volume of a mixture of at least one phosphor and a light transmissive thermosetting material (silicone, epoxy) on a surface of the chip. The pre-selected volume and temperature are selected such that the phosphor/material mixture flows over the entire light emitting surface of the chip before curing. In an alternative method, using a light transmissive UV curable material such as an epoxy, the phosphor/material mixture is irradiated with UV radiation after a pre-selected time to cure the material. The pre-selected volume and pre-selected time are selected such that the phosphor/material mixture flows over at least the light emitting surface of the chip before curing.

Methods of producing light emitting device with phosphor wavelength conversion

A color temperature tunable white light source comprises a first LED arrangement comprising at least one blue emitting LED configured to excite a remote phosphor and a second LED arrangement comprising at least one red emitting LED. The LED arrangements are configured such that the composite light emitted by the LED arrangements appears white in color. The relative drive currents of the LEDs is controllable, and thus variable in relative magnitude, such that the color temperature of the composite light emitted by the source is electrically tunable.

A light source comprises a blue emitting LED operable to generate blue excitation light and a light emitting surface comprising a light transmissive substrate and a phosphor. A method for making a lighting apparatus includes providing a substrate and disposing a light-emitting diode overlying the substrate. The light-emitting diode has a top surface oriented away from the substrate and a plurality of side surfaces. A light-conversion material is provided that includes a substantially transparent base material and a wave-shifting material dispersed in the base material. The concentration of the wave-shifting material can be at least 30%. In an embodiment, the concentration of the wave-shifting material can be approximately 50% or 70%. A predetermined amount of the light-conversion material is deposited on the top surface of the light-emitting diode while the side surfaces are maintained substantially free of the light-conversion material.

A light emitting sign comprising a light box housing a plurality of blue LEDs operable to generate blue excitation light and a light emitting display surface overlaying the light box opening. The light emitting display surface comprises a light transmissive substrate configured as a light transmissive window such that light generated by the sign is emitted from the substrate and a phosphor overlaying at least a portion of one face of the substrate. The phosphor is configured to absorb at least a portion of the blue light generated by the LEDs and, in response, to emit light of a selected color.

This invention provides novel fuel cell electrodes and catalysts comprising a series of catalytically active thin-film metal alloys with low platinum concentration supported on nanostructured materials (nanoparticles). Processing of the electrodes and catalysts can include electrodeposition methods, and high-pressure coating techniques. In certain embodiments, an integrated gas-diffusion/electrode/catalyst layer can be prepared by processing catalyst thin films and nanoparticles into gas-diffusion media such as Toray or SGL carbon fiber papers. The catalysts can be placed in contact with an electrolyte membrane for PEM fuel cell applications.

A color temperature tunable white light source comprises: first and second LED arrangements operable to emit light of first and second wavelength range respectively that are configured such that their combined light output, which comprises light generated by the source, appears white in color. One or both LED arrangements comprises a phosphor provided remote to an associated LED operable to generate excitation radiation and to irradiate the phosphor such that it emits light of a different wavelength range, wherein the light emitted by the LED arrangement comprises the combined light from the LED and phosphor. The color temperature of output white light is tunable by controlling the relative light outputs of the LED arrangements by for example controlling the relative magnitude of the drive currents of the LEDs or a duty cycle of a pulse width modulated drive current.

Novel phosphor systems are disclosed having the formula ASiO:EuD, where A is at least one of a divalent metal selected from the group consisting of Sr, Ca, Ba, Mg, Zn, and Cd; and D is a dopant selected from the group consisting of F, Cl, Br, I, P, S, N, and B. In one embodiment, the novel phosphor has the formula (SrBaM)SiO:EuF (where M is one of Ca, Mg, Zn, or Cd in an amount ranging from 0&#x3c;y&#x3c;0.5). The phosphor is configured to absorb visible light from a blue LED, and luminescent light from the phosphor plus light from the blue LED may be combined to form white light. The novel phosphors can emit light at intensities greater than either conventionally known YAG compounds, or silicate-based phosphors that do not contain the inventive dopant ion.

Silicate-based yellow-green phosphors

A lighting apparatus includes a combination of LED dice that emit light of a first color and a wavelength-shifting material (e.g., phosphor) that converts light of the first color to light of a second color. An appropriate combination of light of the first color and light of the second color can be used to produce light of a target color. In an embodiment, LED dice in the lighting apparatus are divided into two groups. Each LED die in the first group is combined with less wavelength-shifting material than needed to produce light of the target color, while each LED die in the second group is combined with more wavelength-shifting material than needed to produce light of the target color. As a result, the two groups produce light having colors on opposite sides of the target color in the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) chromaticity diagram. In some embodiments, the target color and color variations of both groups are on one straight line in the CIE chromaticity diagram, although it is to be understood that there might be small scattering within the groups. By adjusting the relative brightness of the two groups, the target color can be obtained.

Lighting apparatus having multiple light-emitting diodes with individual light-conversion layers

A light emitting sign comprising a light emitting display surface including at least one phosphor, and at least one radiation source configured to irradiate the display surface with excitation energy such that the phosphor emits light of a selected color. The sign further comprises a filter which is substantially transparent to light emitted by the display surface, filtering other colors of light. The display surface may be configured into a shape of a character, a symbol, or a device. Alternatively, a mask having at least one window substantially transparent to the emitted light and/or at least one light blocking region may be provided in which the window and/or light blocking region define a character, a symbol, or a device.
