A method includes receiving profile information for a network. The method also includes determining a network configuration based on at least a constraint associated with at least one of a network session or a hardware capacity of a hardware platform of the network and a number of sessions that the network configured based on the network configuration can support. The method also includes configuring the network based on the network configuration.

Managing physical resources for virtual network functions

A method and system for multicasting IPTV channels includes using both a designated and a redundant network routing device. When the designated routing device detects that an MCDN network connection to an IPTV multicast source is unavailable, the designated routing device reduces its designation priority to a lower value. A message is sent to the redundant routing device with an instruction to increase its designation priority to a higher value. After the designation priorities have been modified, the designated routing device may serve as a new redundant routing device, while the redundant routing device may serve as a new designated routing device. The routing devices may remain in the new configuration, even after interrupted network connections are restored.

Robust multicast broadcasting

A method and system for multicasting Internet-protocol television (IPTV) channels is disclosed. In order to receive desired IPTV channels, a first-hop router (FHR) may send a join message to a last-hop router (LHR) establishing multiple paths across a backbone network. The join message may specify mapping at least one virtual IPTV channel to a plurality of multicast channels, along with the desired IPTV channels. The multicast channels may then be transmitted in a round-robin manner over the multiple paths from the LHR to the FHR. A number of virtual IPTV channels may be modified in response to determining a loading profile over the multiple paths to maintain a balanced load among the multiple paths.

System and method for measurement-based adaptive caching of virtual connections

A system and method of routing data packets is disclosed. In a particular embodiment, the method includes receiving a first Internet Protocol (IP) data packet at a first access port of an access line card within a data router. The method also includes transmitting the first IP data packet from the first access port to a network line card within the data router, via a first trunk port of the access line card. The first access port is coupled to the first trunk port and not coupled to at least one other access port. The method further includes receiving a second IP data packet at a second trunk port of the access line card from the network line card. In addition, the method includes transmitting the second IP data packet from the second trunk port to a second access port of the access line card.

System and method of routing data packets using trunk ports and access ports

Virtual circuits are dynamically established in a telecommunications network. A cache duration is adaptively determined based on at least one characteristic of the telecommunications network. A virtual circuit is established for a connection between a source and a destination. The virtual circuit is cached when the connection between the source and the destination terminates. The cached virtual circuit is reused when a new connection request occurs during the cache duration. The cached virtual circuit is released after the cache duration when no new connection request occurs during the cache duration.

The present invention provides a method for distributing Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) content over a national IP backbone using GRE tunneling in a point-to-point ring topology. A logical path is defined that connects multiple hub offices, each including at least two routers, in a ring network topology. Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) tunnels are used over an existing Internet Protocol (IP) backbone to establish connectivity between adjacent hub offices. A direction for content flow is defined. The direction of flow may be determined by selecting a designated router. The routers of the hub offices selectively join to upstream routers. This direction may be reversed by changing the direction of in which routers join. IPTV content is distributed over the defined path using the GRE tunnels. The necessity of forwarding the content is determined at each hub office.
