A peripheral component interconnect (PCI) device includes a first memory which includes a plurality of page buffers, a base address register which includes a plurality of base addresses, and a first address translation unit which translates each of the plurality of base addresses to a corresponding one of a plurality of virtual addresses. A map table includes a plurality of map table entries each accessed in correspondence to each of the plurality of virtual addresses, and maps each of the plurality of virtual addresses onto a physical address of physical addresses of the plurality of page buffers. The first address translation unit translates each of the plurality of virtual addresses to a corresponding one of the physical addresses using the map table.

A method for optimizing UDMA transfer signals parameter that functions independently of a computer system is provided. The method of the invention utilizes UDMA CRC errors to adjust an optimized UDMA transfer signal parameter. A total error rate is logged for each selected parameter for determining the parameter with the lowest total error rate. The method functions continuously, to provide reduced CRC error generation and data corruption, and enhanced UDMA transfer signal integrity.

A self-vaccine as used herein will refer to methods of operating a disk drive and the apparatus implementing such methods, which make the disk drive immune to changes in temperature, that keep the disk drive healthy when hot or cold. The invention includes a self-vaccine extending the read channel optimization parameter database of a track zone or sequence to test temperature ranges actually found in the user's operation of the disk drive. The invention also includes the self-vaccine updating the read channel optimization parameter database for an already tested temperature range, whenever there has been sufficient time passed since the read channel optimization was performed for that temperature range. The invention includes read channel optimized parameters for at least temperature ranges within the embedded disk controller, which are updated in the user's operating environment during idle time providing the self-vaccine. The invention includes disk drives including a self-vaccine method.
