Disclosed are thermosetting, powder coating compositions comprised of a blend of semi-crystalline and amorphous polyesters and certain adducts of the 1,3-diazetidine-2,4-dione dimer of isophorone diisocyanate which are readily curable at temperatures and times commonly used to cure (cross-link) powder coatings. When using equivalent curing conditions, the disclosed coating compositions exhibit a higher degree of cross-linking than do combinations of amorphous polyesters alone and the adducts of the 1,3-diazetidine-2,4-dione dimer of isophorone diisocyanate.

Powder coating compositions

This invention provides weatherable thermosetting powder coatings based on an all-aliphatic polyester comprised of residues of 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, 1,3-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid, or 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and 2,6-decahydronaphthalene dimethanol. The polyester may be predominantly hydroxyl or carboxyl functional. Coating compositions prepared therefrom provide coatings which exhibit superior weatherability.

A method of preparing a powder coating composition comprises: (a) forming a mixture comprising solid particles which include a curable resin and a cross-linking agent that is reactive with the curable resin suspended in an aqueous liquid phase comprising water, a surfactant, a stabilizer, and a promoter; (b) warming the mixture to a temperature sufficient to effect reshaping and rounding of the particles; (c) separating the particles from the liquid phase; and (d) drying the particles to form a powder.

This invention provides weatherable thermosetting powder coating compositions based on 1,2-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol. Coatings from this invention exhibit far superior QUV (313 bulb) resistance than compositions based on resins prepared from 1,3-and 1,4-cyclohexanedicarboxylic acid and are 20 times better than standard aromatic resin using the same cross-linking chemistry.

Weatherable powder coatings

Provided are crosslinkable semicrystalline polyester plasticizers useful in thermosetting powder coating compositions. The plasticizers of the present invention are preferably comprised of residues of 1,6-hexanediol and 1,12-dodecanedioic acid, and optionally, residues of trifunctional acids or polyols such as trimethylol-propane, glycerol, trimellitic acid, and the like. The thermosetting powder coating compositions also provided by the present invention exhibit markedly superior properties when compared to compositions lacking said plasticizer. Such coatings exhibit better smoothness, less orange peel, better impact strength and flexibility. In the case of the less-reactive crosslinker such as self-blocked isophorone isocyanate (IPDI), the plasticizers greatly improve the reactivity of the composition and reduce the cure requirement.

Thermosetting powder coating compositions

Provided are polyester resins containing hydroxy functionalized isophthalate ester moieties useful in coating compositions. The invention provides both solvent-borne as well as water-borne coating compositions comprised of the resins and a crosslinker such as a melamine-type crosslinker. Polyester resins of the present invention having a T.sub.8 of greater than about 50.degree. C. are useful in thermosetting powder coating compositions. The coatings thus provided possess excellent acid resistance, hardness, impact resistance, and stain resistance.

Disclosed are polyurethane powder coating compositions comprising at least one amorphous polyester, at least one semi-crystalline polyester, and a polyisocyanate crosslinking agent. Coatings made from such powder compositions provide a unique combination of good hardness and flexibility, while the powder from which they are made has good storage stability.

Disclosed is a process for isolating copolymers comprising repeating units from 2-vinylpyridine and styrene by drowning the reaction emulsion into an acetic acid solution or by adding an acetic acid/water solution to the reaction emulsion. The copolymer isolated by this technique filters and washes much more rapidly than the copolymer isolated using sodium chloride, and the wet cake has a high solids content.
