An electrode including a lithium diffusion rate-controlling layer and a lithium layer stacked successively on the surface thereof, and a method for manufacturing the same are disclosed. Disclosed is a separator for an electrochemical device, interposed between a cathode and an anode to prevent a short circuit between both electrodes. The separator is provided with through-holes having a diameter of 1-20 &#x3bc;m in the thickness direction, and the surfaces of the through-holes are sealed by being coated with a thermoplastic polymer having a melting point equal to or higher than 70&#xb0; C. and lower than 130&#xb0; C. Disclosed is a non-aqueous electrolyte for a lithium secondary battery and a lithium secondary battery comprising the same. The non-aqueous electrolyte including an ionizable lithium salt and an organic solvent may further include (a) 1 to 10 parts by weight of a compound having a vinylene group or vinyl group per 100 parts by weight of the non-aqueous electrolyte, and (b) 10 to 300 parts by weight of a dinitrile compound having an ether bond per 100 parts by weight of the compound having the vinylene group or vinyl group. The lithium secondary battery comprising the non-aqueous electrolyte may effectively suppress the swelling and improve the charge/discharge cycle life.

Provided is a mixed positive electrode active material comprising a large-grain positive electrode active material with an average diameter of 10 &#x3bc;m or greater and a small-grain positive electrode active material with an average diameter of 5 &#x3bc;m or smaller, in which the large-grain positive electrode active material and the small-grain positive electrode active material are coated with different materials between lithium triborate and metal oxide, respectively.

Disclosed is an electrolyte comprising (a) a eutectic mixture of an amide compound represented by the following chemical formula 1 or 2 and an ionizable lithium salt; and (b) a nitrile compound. The eutectic mixture and the nitrile compound in the electrolyte contribute to excellent thermal and chemical stability and sufficiently low viscosity and high ion conductivity. The electrolyte can be usefully applied as an electrolyte of electrochemical devices.

Disclosed is a method for preparing a dinitrile compound. The method includes reacting an alcohol compound with a nitrile compound having a terminal carbon-carbon unsaturated bond under anhydrous conditions. A potassium alkoxide having 1 to 5 carbon atoms is used as a catalyst in the course of the reaction. According to the method, a high-purity dinitrile compound can be prepared in a simple manner within a short reaction time indicating high productivity.

Disclosed is an electrolyte. The electrolyte includes an amide compound and an ionizable lithium salt. The amide compound has a specific structure in which an amine group is substituted with at least one alkoxyalkyl group and at least one halogen atom is present. The electrolyte has good thermal and chemical stability, a low resistance and a high ionic conductivity. In addition, the electrolyte has a high upper limit of electrochemical window due to its improved oxidation stability. Therefore, the electrolyte can be useful for the fabrication of an electrochemical device. Further disclosed is an electrochemical device including the electrolyte.

An electrolyte includes (a) a eutectic mixture of an alkoxy alkyl group-containing amide compound and an ionizable lithium salt; and (b) a carbonate-based compound. The electrolyte has excellent thermal and chemical stability and exhibits a low lowest limit of electrochemical window. Also, the electrolyte shows low viscosity and high ion conductivity, so it may be usefully applied as an electrolyte of electrochemical devices using various anode materials.
