The present invention relates to an electromagnetic waveguide comprising an electromagnetic interference shielding gasket which includes a self-supporting body of non-woven carbon nanotubes adapted to incorporate one or more apertures and to the electromagnetic interference shielding gasket per se.

A method for processing a wafer to form a plurality of hollow microneedles projecting from a substrate includes forming, by use of a dry etching process, a number of groups of recessed features, each including at least one slot deployed to form an open shape having an included area and at least one hole located within the included area. The internal surfaces of the holes and the slots are then coated with a protective layer. An anisotropic wet etching process is then performed in such a manner as to remove material from outside the included areas while leaving a projecting feature within each of the included areas. The protective layer is then removed to reveal the microneedles.

Microneedle structure and production method therefor

A system and method for delivering fluid into a flexible biological barrier employs a microneedle structure wherein a final position of microneedles () inserted into the biological barrier () is generally sideways projecting from the delivery configuration instead of the conventional downwards projecting arrangement. The microneedles () project from a relief surface () which is distinct from a primary biological-barrier contact region () of the delivery configuration, and is typically angled upwards away from the biological barrier. During insertion, the contact region () is brought into contact with the biological barrier () and moved parallel to the surface of the flexible biological barrier so as to generate a boundary () between a stretched portion () and a non-stretched portion () of the barrier. Typically concurrently with this motion, the microneedles () penetrate into the flexible biological barrier such that, at the end of the motion, the microneedles extend into the flexible biological barrier from the boundary region () in a direction towards the non-stretched portion (). Fluid is then injected through the bores of the hollow microneedles towards non-stretched portion.

A device () and method for transporting fluids across biological barriers enhances penetration of a biological barrier by the use of directional insertion, preferably with asymmetric microneedles () and/or microneedles () with sharp edges. Additionally, or alternatively, adhesion followed by alteration of contact geometry is employed to stretch the biological barrier across the microneedles (), thereby also enhancing penetration. Also disclosed is a device () and method which combine shallow penetration by hollow microneedles () with jet injection via the microneedles () to achieve a total liquid penetration depth greater than the mechanical penetration depth of the microneedles ().

Devices and methods for transporting fluid across a biological barrier

A device for the transport of fluids through a biological barrier includes a number of microneedles projecting from the front face of a substrate. A conduit is associated with each of the microneedles to provide a fluid flow path for transport of fluid through a hole in the biological barrier formed by the corresponding microneedle. Each of the microneedles is configured to provide a penetrating tip, and each conduit terminates at an opening which is proximal with respect to the microneedle tip. Also described are microneedle-based devices with integrated MEMS pumping configurations for withdrawal and/or delivery of fluids, and remote healthcare systems based on such devices.

The method also including developing the first layer so as to selectively remove one of the at least one irradiated region and the at least one non-irradiated region such that, at least part of at least one remaining region at least partially defines a form of at least part of a microneedle structure. A composite protective body suitable, among others, for making protective garments comprises a pliable flat case with at least one panel of soft ballistic material, and an insert within the case. The insert is composed of a plurality of consituent bodies of glass or ceramic material. The constituent bodies of the insert are of axisymmetrical or centrosymmetrical shape and of a size commensurate with that of the kinetic missiles against which protection is to be afforded. The bodies are arranged in at least two superimposed layers in each of which the constituent bodies are spaced from each other by a distance smaller than the size of a body with each body in one layer bridging a gap between two bodies of the adjacent layer. Each constituent body of the insert is glued to all surrounding bodies by thermoplastic or thermosetting material.
