Universal serial bus wakeup when the bus is not powered. In one embodiment, a method of waking up a universal serial bus (USB) from a non-powered state, comprises: upon detection of a wakeup condition, a wakeup generation module associated with a USB device generating a wakeup signal on a power line of a USB bus coupled to the USB device, or on a single-wire sideband; and a host wakeup module detecting the wakeup signal and causing the USB bus that is coupled to the USB device to be supplied with power.

An improved system is described for allowing an embedded controller and a host processor to share access to modules in a computer system. The shared access system of the present invention enables exclusive, one-at-a-time access by a processor to a module and concurrent access by more than one processor to a module. An internal bus with two power sources is used to allow continued access by one of the processors when one of the two power sources is not providing power. Asynchronous clocking is provided to allow increased throughput to modules. An example of a protocol that allows an embedded controller to access more than one module is also described.

A controller handles host commands from a host processor and also interfaces the host processor to a serial device. Storage circuitry (e.g., a shift register) of the controller holds a predetermined plurality of data bits. State machine circuitry controls the storage circuitry for serial bit-level communication (e.g., using a PS/2 protocol) between the storage circuitry and the serial device. A processor executes code from a program memory. In particular, the program code causes the processor to detect that a host command has been received by the controller from the host processor and causes an action corresponding to the host command received. Because the processor is not involved with the serial bit-level communication between the storage circuitry and the serial device, the processor executing the software can handle host commands without affecting the serial bit-level communication.

A multi-mode home terminal system utilizes a single embedded processor and a single RAM for performing modem operations, graphics/video processing and general purpose control tasks. The multi-mode home terminal system supports a wide range of video/graphics standards, modems and voice algorithms. Home terminal input data to be displayed on an associated monitor can be decoded to any display list format or directly to the system's frame buffer. The display lists, frame buffer, font area, and embedded processor memory are located in the same single random access memory, thus allowing the use of a single RAM for DSP data, display lists, video buffers, voice compression/decompression algorithms and embedded controller tasks. The system is flexible for programming the desired video standard, modem type and display list format. Since both the video function and the embedded processor are supported by the same RAM, a RAM arbiter resolves bus contention.
