A method of communicating within a mesh network comprises scheduling a mesh access reservation time period for transmission of one or more frames by the mesh device on a channel. During the scheduled mesh access reservation time period: contention for the channel is performed with one or more other mesh devices in the network; and at least one frame is transmitted when the mesh device wins the contention. After the scheduled mesh access reservation time period: when one or more frames scheduled for transmission during the scheduled mesh access reservation time period remain to be transmitted; contention for the channel continues; and the one or more frames are transmitted when the mesh device wins the contention for the channel and when another mesh device has not reserved the channel for the time period.

Method of communicating within a mesh network

A method for transmitting packets in a wireless communication network includes taking into consideration an antenna mode prior to transmission. The method includes determining a transmit antenna mode for a transmission between the node and at least one other node; when the transmit antenna mode is omni-directional, broadcasting a transmission schedule for the transmission omni-directionally; and when the transmit antenna is beamforming directional, broadcasting a transmission schedule for the transmission directionally on one or more transmitter beams. The method optionally can also take into consideration an antenna mode of a receive antenna between the node.

Antenna-aware method for transmitting packets in a wireless communication network

The present invention provides a method for managing transmissions in a wireless communication network (). The method at a first node () of a plurality of nodes of the wireless communication network includes transmitting () a data frame to a second node () using a first transmit power level. The method further includes determining () whether an acknowledgement for the transmitted data frame is received from the second node. Further, the method includes determining () a cause of unsuccessful transmission when the acknowledgement is not received from the second node. Moreover, the method includes re-transmitting () the data frame to the second node using a second transmit power level when the cause of unsuccessful transmission is determined as a collision. Furthermore, the method includes setting () a transmit power level of the first node to a third transmit power level.

Method and system for managing transmissions in a wireless communication network

A method for managing scanning of a plurality of channels in a wireless network is disclosed. The method comprises detecting by a station that a first channel in a plurality of channels is being used for a communication by another station, determining a duration of the communication based upon the communication information, setting a Network Allocation Vector for the station based on the determined duration, scanning a number of channels during the determined duration, and returning to the first channel upon at least one of a) completion of the step of scanning and b) an end of the determined duration.

Method for managing scanning of channels in a wireless network

A method for accessing a wireless local area network (WLAN) channel and providing quality of service (QoS) for voice in a system supporting both voice and data services. Under the method, a communication device () contends for a medium (channel). Upon identifying a transmit opportunity, the device transmits a voice packet to an access point (AP) () and polls the AP for downlink traffic. A low power implementation is feasible because the communication device can sleep, wake up to contend for the medium, transmit a voice packet to the AP, request a voice packet from the AP, transmit an acknowledgement, and go back to sleep.

Method of communication device initiated frame exchange

A mobile terminal () wakes up from a low power state and initiates a frame exchange in a wireless local area network that supports voice traffic by transmitting a polling frame (). If the mobile terminal had voice data to send, it is included in the polling frame. In response to receiving the polling frame, the access point transmits a delay frame () to acknowledge receipt of the polling frame. If the access point has data for the polling mobile terminal, it transmits a non-delay frame () including the voice data, otherwise it transmits a null frame (). The mobile terminal acknowledges the data from the access point (), and goes back to sleep until the beginning of the next service interval.

Method for performing transactions in a wireless local area network

An access point () for a wireless local area network () transmits a beacon message during a service interval period (). This beacon message identifies, in a preferred embodiment, those subscriber units to whom the access point will shortly be transmitting data. Subscriber units that are not identified in the beacon message and that do not have data themselves to transmit to the access point can implement a power conservation mode of operation until the next beacon message. Subscriber units that have data, such as voice information, to transmit can utilize the beacon message contents to at least estimate a likely time by when the access point will have concluded making its transmissions to the subscriber units. That estimated time can then be used to facilitate scheduling a time at which a given subscriber unit will contend for an opportunity to transmit its data to the access point. In a preferred embodiment, this scheduled transmission time can potentially occur either during a contention window that follows the service interval period or during a dynamic contention window that follows the transmissions of the access point and concludes with the conclusion of the service interval period. Subscriber units can then use intervening periods of time to effect their power conservation schemes of choice.

Method and apparatus for facilitating data transmissions

A mobile station establishes a schedule by which data is exchanged with an access point. The schedule allows the mobile station to use a low power mode at times outside of the scheduled service periods. However, the mobile station may occasionally need to retrieve additional data from the access point, or transmit additional data to the access point, and so initiates an unscheduled service period to do so.

Hybrid power save delivery method in a wireless local area network for real time communication

A method of selecting one or more active slave wireless devices from a plurality of active/parked slave wireless devices is implemented by a master wireless device. The master wireless device initially assigns sequential weights to each active/parked slave wireless device, and subsequently designates one or more of the active/parked slave wireless devices as active slave wireless device(s) based partially or entirely on the assigned sequential weights. The assignment of sequential weights can be accomplished by assigning each active/parked slave wireless device to one of a plurality of ranked groups collectively representative of various traffic types between a base site and the active/parked slave wireless devices. Each active/parked slave wireless device is then sorted within its respective group.

Selective networking method for mobile ad hoc networks

A mobile station () establishes a real time communication link via an access point () for carrying voice or other time-sensitive data. A WLAN subsystem () of the mobile station is normally kept in a low power state. Upon initiating a communication link the mobile station signals to the access point that unscheduled power save delivery mode will be used (), and the access point reserves resources to assure the necessary quality of service. The mobile station initiates a frame transaction by first powering up the WLAN subsystem (), acquiring the WLAN channel (), and transmitting a polling frame. Upon successful receipt of the polling frame the access point prepares to reply with an aggregate response. The aggregate response commences by transmitting all data in an aggregate buffer, including both reserved and unreserved data buffers. Upon successful receipt of the aggregate response, the mobile station places the WLAN subsystem back into a low power state.
