A mobile phone including a handset having a transceiver adapted for selective communication in cellular and satellite modes. The handset includes a cellular antenna adapted to receive cellular wavelength signals, a connector for a satellite antenna, and a switch adapted to selectively connect either the cellular antenna or the connector to the transceiver. The satellite antenna is adapted for selective connection to the connector of the mobile phone handset, the satellite antenna being adapted to receive satellite wavelength signals. The satellite antenna includes a cavity in a first portion adapted to receive and frictionally secure to the cellular antenna, and a plunger is adapted to engage the switch to disconnect the cellular antenna from, and connect the satellite antenna to, the transceiver when the satellite antenna is secured to the handset connector.

Combination cellular/satellite wireless communication devices

A flip cover and antenna assembly for a portable phone is disclosed as being rotatably coupled to a main housing thereof. The flip cover and antenna assembly includes a first flip cover housing, a second flip cover housing matable with the first flip cover housing, and an antenna element positioned between the first and second flip cover housings. The antenna element further includes a ground plane bonded to the ground plane first surface. A dielectric foam is positioned over any remaining area of the ground plane first surface. The first and second flip cover housings have flanges which extend from at least a portion thereof to wrap around corresponding edges of the main housing, which enables extensions of the ground plane to be provided conforming to the flanges. The ground plane may also be patterned in order to control the radiation pattern thereof and limit any interference from other components of the portable phone. The flip cover and antenna assembly may also include a second antenna in the form of a printed circuit antenna or a monopole antenna.

Flip cover and antenna assembly for a portable phone

A portable phone is disclosed as including a main housing, circuitry located within the main housing for operating the portable phone in a designated mode of communication, a support bracket assembly detachably coupled to the main housing, a flip cover rotatably secured to the support bracket assembly about a first axis, and an antenna coupled to the circuitry for transmitting and receiving signals in the designated communication mode associated with the flip cover. The flip cover is also rotatable about a second axis with respect to the support bracket assembly, which is substantially perpendicular to the first axis. The support bracket assembly includes a support bracket having a slotted portion at one end sized to receive an end of the main housing, a latching mechanism for coupling the support bracket to the main housing, a hinge mechanism located at the other end of the support bracket to rotatably couple the support bracket to the flip cover about the first axis, and a yoke having an annular step which captures the flip cover so it can rotate about the second axis. The designated mode of communication may be cellular and/or satellite.

Detachable flip cover assembly for a portable phone

A communication terminal including a communication unit, a longitudinal antenna enclosed in a radome, and a pivot connecting the antenna to the unit for pivoting about an axis with an RF connection to the unit. The unit is in a box-shaped enclosure having a front face with a keypad and connected to a rear face by top and bottom faces, and two side faces. One of the unit front and rear faces is non-planar from top to bottom with the spacing between the front and rear faces varying from top to bottom. The spacing between the radome front and rear faces varies to substantially match the varied spacing between the unit front and rear faces so that the radome and unit front and rear faces define a uniform profile when the radome is adjacent one unit side face. The unit top face lies on one side of a first plane and at least one unit side face lies on one side of a second plane perpendicular to the first plane. An L-shaped support secured to the unit supports a pivot shaft defining the pivot axis substantially parallel to both of the planes and spaced on the other side of both of the planes by distances allowing the antenna to pivot through a 270 degrees range. A plurality of detents are spaced about the pivot shaft, and a detent mechanism secured to the antenna engages one of the pivot shaft detents in each of a plurality of pivoted positions. The radome has two shells connected substantially along a plane, with longitudinally spaced ribs supporting the antenna in a position spaced from the shell outer walls.

Antenna for hand-held communication user terminal

An antenna operable in two disparate frequency bands is disclosed as including a first quadrifilar helix having four conductive elements arranged helically to define a cylinder of substantially constant radius, where the first quadrifilar helix is formed of two bifilar helices arranged orthogonally and excited in phase quadrature. A quadrature feed network is connected to the first quadrifilar helix, wherein one end of a coupling element thereof is connected to a first end of each conductive element. The quadrature feed network also includes a first feedpoint for operation of the antenna with circular polarization in a first frequency band and a second feedpoint for operation of the antenna with linear polarization in a second frequency band. The antenna may include a second quadrifilar helix connected to the quadrature feed network and having four conductive elements arranged helically to define a cylinder of substantially constant radius, where the second quadrifilar helix is formed by two bifilar helices arranged orthogonally and excited in phase quadrature. The second quadrifilar helix is wound in opposite sense with respect to the first quadrifilar helix so as to be conductively coupled therewith.

Antenna system for dual mode satellite/cellular portable phone

A multi-piece retractable radiotelephone antenna and associated communication method is employed to provide improved signal quality. The multi-piece antenna includes conductive windings, such as helical quadrafillar windings, disposed separately on two slidably cooperating substrate members. The antenna is mechanically extended to a deploy position and the separate windings are electrically connected thereby doubling the effective electrical length of the antenna.

Retractable radiotelephone antennas and associated radiotelephone

A device for connecting the RF signal circuitry of a portable phone and a plurality of antennas utilized to transmit and receive signals is disclosed. The connector device includes a female portion electrically coupled to the RF signal circuitry, with the female portion providing a plurality of ports for electrical coupling with the RF signal circuitry. A complementary male portion is also provided which is electrically coupled to the antennas, the male portion including a separate pin member connected to each antenna. Each pin member of the male portion is received within a corresponding one of the ports in the female portion as the male and female portions of the connector device are mated together. In this way, the RF signal circuitry and the antennas are electrically coupled. The antennas of the portable phone are integrated with a flip cover rotatably mounted to a phone base containing the RF signal circuitry, where the flip cover may be either fixedly or detachably secured to the phone base.

Antenna connector device for a handheld mobile phone

A three-way switch for individually connecting either a dummy load, a first antenna, or a second antenna to a radio transmitter power amplifier output. The switch includes a first member connected to a dummy load and a second flexible member fixed in position relative to the first member and biased against the first member so as to make an electrical connection between the first and second member. The second member is connected to the radio transmitter output and includes two contact areas for connecting to a first and a second antenna. When a first antenna is applied against the first contact area, the transmitter is disconnected from the dummy load and only the first antenna is connected to the transmitter output. When a second antenna is applied to the second contact area the flexible member of the switch disconnects from the first antenna and only the second antenna is connected to the transmitter output.

Three-way switch for protection of a power amplifier during antenna

A coaxial cable assembly for connecting at least one antenna element with RF signal circuitry of a portable phone is disclosed. The portable phone includes a base portion in which the RF signal circuitry is located and a flip cover rotatably secured to the base portion in which the antenna elements are located. The flip cover is rotatably secured to the base portion by means of a support bracket assembly. The coaxial cable assembly provides a separate coaxial cable for each antenna element, with a first end thereof being coupled to the antenna element and a second end being coupled to the RF signal circuitry. Each coaxial cable is shaped to extend through the support bracket assembly so as to withstand bend stresses associated with rotation of the flip cover, with certain locations of the coaxial cable being formed to maintain such shape.
